How do you do a big shop with a baby?

I lay awake pondering this one last night! As you can tell I'm pregnant and a FTM!

So I'm wanting my baby to lay flat for the first 6 months as they advise. So how do you navigate a pram & a shopping trolley?! How do you improvise?

Also agree with above posters that shopping with a newborn is fairly ok.
Toddler on the other hand can be a nightmare. But it gets easier when you know your child and what triggers them etc.
I do some shops online, but I also figure it’s good for ds to come to the supermarket with me when he isn’t overtired/it’s a fairly quiet time.
I do think they have to learn boring jobs must be done.
Sometimes he is a little gem and will help me packing etc.
Other times he isn’t so good. Typical three year old.
You get the odd look from some people if he does start playing up but I think I deal with it fairly well and minimise disruption to any one else.
Plus I think some older people who had their dc a long time ago are quick to forget they must have had to take their dc shopping before the internet, and it really is good for children to have to do ordinary every day things rather than stimulation just for them every minute of the day.

We used to do car seat in the trolley. Our supermarket was very close and it certainly didn’t take two hours to do our shopping. Any times we felt we were going to be too long we’d take ds out of car seat and pop in pram. This tended to be for regular non food shopping trips where bags could be stored on handles or in big basket under pram. When ds was a newborn we never had him out too long generally if it could be helped.

Sling, practice now! Add extra time to stop and talk to people who want to fuss your baby. Especially when they're bigger and smile at people who then come over to chat and fuss them.

PasstheStarmix · 12/08/2018 19:44

Ds was much easier to shop with when he wasn’t sitting in the trolley seat grabbing at everything and letting his feeling be known to all Blush he’s a very vocal little boy and I have to have a bag of tricks to keep him quiet these days and lots of snacks!

I’ll be doing click and collect as I’m only a few minutes walk from Asda.

If it was further though, I would do online shopping and get it delivered. You’ll save money doing it online too - you won’t buy tat just because you see it! :)

balalalala · 12/08/2018 19:47

Online, definitely! I even had a very nice Tesco driver put away all my fridge and freezer stuff for me when baby was suddenly poorly whilst I was holding her!

CaurnieBred · 12/08/2018 19:50

A sling only works if you are tall. The one time 5' 2" me tried it, I couldn't bend down into the deep part of the trolley to pick up my messages without squashing DD. I had to ask someone to help!

rainingcatsanddog · 12/08/2018 19:51

At 6 months most babies are strong enough to sit upright enough to eat. Most can roll and some will be crawling. (The majority will be far too nosy to stay flat in a supermarket where there's so much happening!)

peanutbutter310 · 12/08/2018 19:53

Until 4 months DD would just snooze in the sling. 4-12 months she loved just sitting up in the trolley taking everything in. Then she learnt to walk, and started wanting to get down and run around, so it's online for me now!

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 12/08/2018 19:54

Online shopping i use asda one time pass cost £10 a month and I use it for everything now can't remember last time I was in a supermarket

butlerswharf · 12/08/2018 20:00

Online shopping plus when you're on maternity leave there's no need to do a big shop as I popped out pretty much every day for stuff.

timeisnotaline · 12/08/2018 20:20

How is the op supposed to practice with a sling now? They are quite different with an actual baby...

Toomanyslippers · 12/08/2018 20:22

@CaurnieBred I'm only little too so maybe a sling wouldn't be the best option for me afterall!

Another for online. Also, car seat is about their positioning (chin to chest) so a sling will solve that issue.

Also 5'2" and never had an issue. I just bend while gently supporting baby's head.

Online shop
Car seat in trolly
Pram and use the basket underneath
Shop in the evenings when partner is home to watch baby

I used a big teddy. Sling libraries have weighted dolls and they love helping expectant parents practise.

BillyAndTheSillies · 12/08/2018 20:49

Used to put DS in one of the trolleys where the car seat strapped on.
Doing a big shop with a baby is a hell of a lot easier than doing it with a toddler!

GummyGoddess · 12/08/2018 20:49

I practiced tying the sling and inserting a doll into it while pregnant. I was then confident enough to get dc1 into it at less than a week old.

Learning to tie it is half the battle, getting baby in carefully is easier when you're confident you've tied it correctly.

GummyGoddess · 12/08/2018 20:52

Also pp are correct, toddler shopping is only feasible if they remain in the trolley. I allow dc1 to walk if it's pretty empty in the shop and I have nothing I need to do. He roams the aisles, passes me random items that I have to put back without him seeing and then makes a beeline for the bakery section.

Redteapot67 · 12/08/2018 20:52

More importantly practice online shopping!
Set up an account and get a favorites list! Get into the habit of a weekly delivery of the big items. Learn how to search for offers and apply coupons/discounts.

Mamaryllis · 12/08/2018 20:53

Aw caurnie- I haven’t heard messages for way too long Smile I miss Glasgae.
Anyhoo - online. Or husband.
But remember you have already done an online shop. I used to alternate between tesco and sainsburys and one fateful day received two deliveries Blush

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 12/08/2018 20:54

Ocado

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/08/2018 20:57

Trolley with a baby seat. 😆
