Bedside cribs...

I've been looking at lots of different options for a sleeping arrangement for our baby for the first 6 months. Originally was going to buy a chicco next to me, but when seeing it in the flesh didn't think it actually felt that sturdy?! Have also looked at tutti bambini cozee and snuzpod (but not seen those in real life yet). However am now thinking of getting something a little more like a moses basket but not wicker - the moba or shnuggle. More because they can be lifted and moved around the house for day time naps. What are all your experiences with these kind of things? Any recommendations, things to look for, avoid etc? Thanks!

We had the next to me and it worked well for us, it was always secured to the adult bed, we didn’t use it stand alone, so perfectly sturdy. DS was just within arms reach for a feed but safely in his own space where I couldn’t squash him or get duvet over him. He moved out just before 6 months when he outgrew it.

BareBelliedSneetch · 08/08/2018 21:03

The bednest can be lifted and taken to other parts of the house for daytime naps.

In reality we never, ever did that.

It’s far more convenient to have a secondary cot/basket/carry cot in the sitting room. So I’d probably not worry too much about that aspect!

SophieStripe · 08/08/2018 21:06

So you would suggest having something like next to me in our room and then just a cheap moses or something in the living room rather than something that moves around the house? Or perhaps even the bassinet of the pram for living room sleeps. We have a divan type bed (one of those that lifts up with storage underneath). Do you know if next to me works with this kind of style bed? I couldn't see how it would attach...

We had the next to me attached foe the first 8 weeks and then stand alone until she went into a cot at 16 weeks. We had a noses basket on a stand downstairs. This worked really well for us.

1984FS · 08/08/2018 21:08

I have just moved my baby out of the the Cozee, but it was so useful. He's now in a proper cot at the end of the bed for a month or so, but the bedside cot was soooo much easier in the night, I could just lean over and pick him up or comfort him without even sitting up because the edge was down. We had a separate Moses basket in the lounge but it was very quickly grown out of - before the bedside cot.

Desmondo2016 · 08/08/2018 21:08

We had it on a divan. It definitely works. I can't remember how but the straps are REALLY long.

fieldmuse · 08/08/2018 21:08

Next2Me was great for us. Moses basket is fine for the first few weeks but tbh after that (when it gets to the stage you need to get them to nap, rather than them just dropping off!) we put them upstairs in the Next2Me (monitor is useful here) or had naps in the pram/sling.

In my experience babies don't like the moses basket for long! And they stop sleeping all the time quite quickly too!

SophieStripe · 08/08/2018 21:15

The shnuggle moses does look good to be fair, gets very good reviews and is apparently bigger than normal moses baskets. I definitely want to have a look at the snuzpod and the cozee though as this style of next to me sleeping was originally what I had in mind. It was the flimsiness of the chicco that put me off this style but I didn't see it actually attached to a bed.

Not sure what you mean about being flimsy? Lightweight is a bonus but it is sturdy. But good to look at all options!

ReginaPhalange89 · 08/08/2018 21:35

I had a Next2Me crib and honestly it was amazing . It was so great being able to see her, especially in the early days when you're constantly checking every single noise you hear. Also for breastfeeding (if you are) not having to get out of bed . I also think it helped with my wee one settling on her own too . I used to put her down awake in the next2me and lie on the bed til she drifted off. Eventually I'd just put her down and leave before she was asleep and she settled herself .
I had a separate Moses basket in the living room . It wasn't really used that long tbh. Used the next2me til she went into her own room just around 5.5 months

ReginaPhalange89 · 08/08/2018 21:37

Also I happened to see a similar version of a next 2me on Groupon yesterday, was like half the price of the Chicco. Worth checking out and seeing if the reviews are any good

SophieStripe · 08/08/2018 21:37

Flimsy as in it seems to move from side to side really easily with just a small rock/push. Maybe sturdy is a better word. But perhaps it was just a rubbish set up in mothercare! Is next to me all of your favourites then? Anyone had cozee (other than 1984FS) or snuzpod?

The next to me works for DD and me, as said above I can pick her up for a feed without getting out of bed. It's also quite nice waking up next to her.

longbar · 08/08/2018 21:43

I used the pram’s carrycot for naps, though I did buy an additional little mattress for it. A bednest type sleeper will attach with long straps around your bed. With your storage bed it would need to go over the base part of the bed, and be as taut as possible.

DrWhy · 08/08/2018 21:43

I understand what you mean about it being flimsy to be fair, it’s very lightweight and the adjustable legs have slight play in them but attached to the bed it’s absolutely fine.
We just had a poddle pod for daytime naps, but he mainly slept on me or in a buggy or sling - after about the first couple of weeks he wouldn’t sleep unless I was moving him for about 4 months anyway!
This time round I think we will get a basic Moses basket for naps in case big brother finds poking the poddle pod irresistible!

Blueroses99 · 08/08/2018 21:46

Don’t depend on moving any kind of crib around the house, especially if you have stairs. It might be difficult to carry something so bulky after birth but also might be dangerous in any sleep deprived state. We had a Schnuggle which DD slept really well in but very quickly got annoyed with moving it around the house so we also got a Next2Me for upstairs. This was great too, I could comfort her without getting up. No issues with sturdiness. The straps are pretty long so I’m sure they fit most beds, there’s probably a YouTube video on how to fit it to your bed type. I also considered a Snuzpod but glad I didn’t as DD had reflux and Snuzpod doesn’t have a tilt setting, and I liked the look of a Cozee but there was a stock issue when I needed it and there was a sole supplier, Mothercare, who are a nightmare to deal with, the order date kept changing and I was on hold on the phone for an hour plus. I was happy with my choice of Next2Me and even used it as a travel cot as it folds up.

If you decide to use your bassinet, check with the manufacturer whether it’s suitable for overnight sleeping. It’s to do with airflow, I wouldn’t have liked DD having naps in one that she could only safely be in for a couple of hours. The one we had was fine for occasional overnights but we didn’t think to use it for indoor daytime naps as we had the Schnuggle. Babies grow out of wicker Moses baskets really quickly so I wouldn’t bother with those.

tenbob · 08/08/2018 21:49

We had a Snuzpod and loved it
It was if enough to use til DS was 6 months old but small enough that I could still get out of bed when it was attached to the bed

SophieStripe · 08/08/2018 22:00

Thanks for all your inputs! The snuzpod3 apparently now has the tilt setting for reflux issues. Obviously no idea if our baby will have that or not but I like to know it is there just in case! I like that the next to me is more transportable than the snuz, for going to gparents or whatever but in reality I'm not sure how regularly we would bother taking bed there. They will probably have sleeping arrangements at their house rather than us transporting... Friends houses etc obviously different. The prams we are looking at all have bassinets designed for overnight sleeping... So many choices!! I think I'm going to go have a proper look at all three but at the moment I am drawn to the snuzpod3... But haven't seen it in the flesh yet! I can't wait to start buying stuff!!

My 6 week old DS is in a tutti bambini cozee and can't fault it. We have it on a slight incline which seems to make him more comfortable. Plenty of room for growing too (and he's a big baby)

mrs2468 · 08/08/2018 22:07

Tutti bambini here too upstairs and love it. Downstairs a Moses basket. Couldn't be bothered with the hassle of moving things up and down the stairs. Was a god send after a c section saved a lot of moving about.

tenbob · 08/08/2018 22:12

Forgot to say we had a sleepyhead as well, and used that downstairs, on the sofa next to me
It was easy for DH to carry the newborn upstairs in the sleepyhead, and then straight into the snuzpod

We didn't ever bring the snuzpod bassinet downstairs

Angelmiracle · 08/08/2018 22:16

I'm going to get a beside crib too have seen good reviews on this BabyLo Cozi Sleeper its in Smyths and on Amazon

PinkAvocado · 08/08/2018 22:18

With my first I brought the Snuzpod bassinet downstairs every day and lied that it was so lightweight.

ThatGirl82 · 08/08/2018 22:18

We had the Tutti Bambini Cozzee and loved it. It looks really nice and our DD seemed comfy in it. It is easy to use for travelling with too and comes with a carry bag.

We used a Sleepyhead downstairs for naps, either on the dining table or the lounge floor. That worked well for us.

Blueroses99 · 08/08/2018 22:18

Ah that’s good that Snuzpod have added a tilt function. Check the mattress size as Snuzpod was the smallest one of the 3 when I looked last year which meant it would be grown out of quicker. DD was a preemie and we actually didn’t buy anything until she was actually here. Quite a lot of the stuff on my wish list changed once I had her because I had a better idea of what she actually needed eg knowing she had reflux, that she was a tiny baby, so we got an extra padded buggy etc
