Different reactions from people when they find out you're having a boy instead of a girl

I am pregnant with a boy and I am absolutely over the moon (I would have been the same with a girl - I had no preference) however when people catch wind of the fact he's going to be a boy, theres almost a disappointment in their voice and so many people say 'are you happy it's a boy?' WTF, why wouldn't I be? I know they wouldn't have said 'are you happy its girl?'!

I have stopped telling people the sex but have already told a few close friends and colleagues, I just don't understand why people seem to be disappointed on my behalf that I'm having a son. Their reactions would definitely be different if I was having a girl.

Anyone experienced this?

Yes Yes Yes!!! I’ve noticed the same thing. People always seem more excited with the ‘awwww it’s a girl? Girls are so special. How lovely!’
With a boy it’s just a disappointed ‘ahhh’.
I’m chuffed we’re having a boy too. It’s our first so either way we would have been happy but I can’t wait to have a cheeky little happy in the family. Boys bring so much laughter x

My father seemed about disappointed when he realised that he wasn't going to get the opportunity to relive my childhood through my children but apart from that everyone has expressed approval that we only have boys or not commented on gender either positively or negatively.

SoyDora · 31/07/2018 13:23

People have been very enthusiastic about the fact that I’m having a boy, but I imagine that’s because I already have 2 girls and therefore must have been ‘trying for a boy’ Hmm (we weren’t, we would have been equally as happy either way).

Dreamingofkfc · 31/07/2018 14:34

Yep, even more so that I'm expecting my third boy. I absolutely adore them and wouldn't change my boys for anything, in fact was hoping for a boy this time as makes it easier as they are all close in age. Other ppl seem to think it's a massive issue and I just ignore them

quarterpast · 31/07/2018 14:42

I've been amazed at the difference in reaction. I had my three boys close together, then a bit of a gap and just had our first girl. I've had people stopping me in the street to look at her, a chorus of 'ahhhh' when I walk past with her in the pram. People say 'Oh a girl you must be delighted..?!' It's not just because we've already got the boys, because it's not always people who know me/us. I never had anything like the attention with my boys when they were babies. It's very odd I agree Confused

When I was pregnant with DS people thought I must be terribly disappointed. Most of their comments seemed to revolve around shopping. Like I’d be so sad to not be able to go out and buy lots of pink flowery shit. It was weird, I’m not girly myself. Also, when he was a newborn there were always comments about him being a daddy’s boy just because DH was holding him or pushing his pram.

Aprilshowersinjuly · 31/07/2018 14:47

I had a dd and several ds - 2 scans showed a dd with dc number 7.
After an awful back to back labour ds arrived.

Was shocked but def not disappointed - he slept through from a fortnight old. Compensation I called it!!

Somanymistakes · 31/07/2018 14:51

My FIL wanted a granddaughter so much he used to call my bump by a female name. Even though we had clearly told him we were having a boy.

Later he also brought a list of names he thought were suitable for a boy (whilst calling the yet to be born baby boy, Sarah) , so he was more than a little bit annoying when i was pregnant.

aliceinchunderland1 · 31/07/2018 14:53

Wow shocked to see so many of you agree actually, I thought it might have just been me being overly sensitive! I absolutely cannot wait to be a parent and it makes no odds to me if it's a boy or girl who arrives. I'm just getting a bit pissed off with people being sad on my behalf!

Oh, and i had total strangers warn me that he wont want anything to do with me when he found a girlfriend. One woman was very bitter, telling me to enjoy my very new-born, because he will soon not bother with me.

Another family friend wrote a card to me when he was born saying that boys love their mums until they are 3 years old and then disregard them.

Fucking lunatics.

DiabolicalMess · 31/07/2018 14:54

Yep!! It's even worse if you have a second boy too.

🙄

Blaablaablaa · 31/07/2018 14:55

Yes!!! Someone actually said ' never mind, maybe you'll get a girl next time'!

I also got a lot of boys are best etc which I found equally as insulting

aliceinchunderland1 · 31/07/2018 14:58

I agree with the 'boys are the best' thing, it come across as an "oh...never mind.. boys are great too.." kind of thing

When we fell pregnant with DS2, everyone was asking me if I wanted a girl to 'balance it out'. When we announced the second baby was a boy, we had a few comments along the lines of 'oh, bet you wanted one of each? Are you going to try again for a girl?!' So rude. OH and I were over the moon with the second little bundle being a boy!

Halfeatentoast · 31/07/2018 15:00

Odd, I'm having a girl and been told girls are horrible and much harder work!

Why do people think we want to hear this!

Pinkgeorge · 31/07/2018 15:00

Why is it that in some cultures boys are the thing to aim for but in this county people are so down on them?!. I love having boys, stopped at 2 but would love another boy

bobsandvagene · 31/07/2018 15:03

Yep I got all the 'are you happy it's a boy then?' comments

Can kind of understand if it's your second or third of all boys (still totally rude though and I'd love all boys) but just makes no sense at all when it's the FIRST BABY

What on earth makes baby girls preferable at all?

SoyDora · 31/07/2018 15:13

Since becoming pregnant with a boy (after 2 girls) all I’ve heard is ‘boys are so much less complicated’ and ‘boys are much more loving and affectionate’.

youareawizard · 31/07/2018 15:19

I have a three week old son and this was pretty much all I got when I was pregnant.

It was annoying.

Somanymistakes · 31/07/2018 15:21

I started saying I was having a puppy after i got a few rude "oh, never mind, there's always next time.." reactions when I told people i was having a second boy.

And when i got quite grumpy and big, i would tell people that reaction was actually quite rude.

One of my friends husbands told me a strange theory about his sperm being superior because he could create female offspring. Something about having stronger genetics and real men have daughters. What a load of shit.

People are so insecure.

aliceinchunderland1 · 31/07/2018 15:21

Good to hear your stories on this, even my Mum (who was adamant this baby would be a girl) said 'oh boys are so much easier though' like I needed convincing that having a boy would be fine!

Somanymistakes when we had our second girl DH was told ‘real men have boys’. I think some people are just dicks!

Moral of the story is......
People need to mind their own fucking business!!!! 😁

laylasmummy1 · 31/07/2018 21:24

same 🤨 people seem very disappointed with my boy... I've started to say "I feel the same as when i had my first... very lucky" when im asked... a young girl at work did say that she would be very unhappy with a boy and wouldn't want it! I don't understand it. x
