Too early to buy things??

When did people start buying things? So I'm fairly early on, but I've seen a couple of bargains... am I tempting fate if I start buying things?

How early are u

SoyDora · 25/07/2018 21:00

Bought one thing at 20 weeks after the anomaly scan then the rest at about 32 weeks. Sales come and go pretty regularly so didn’t see the need to rush.

fuzzywuzzy · 25/07/2018 21:00

I tend to leave it right near the end as I suffered several MC.

If you’re healthy and pregnancy is going well, I don’t see why you shouldn’t buy whenever you feel you want to.

starpatch · 25/07/2018 21:00

No of course not you need to prepare for your baby :-)

Waitingonasmiley42 · 25/07/2018 21:00

First baby: 35 weeks when baby unexpectedly arrived and we hadn’t bought anything.
Second baby: We had most things but bought the rest after 30 weeks.

SoyDora · 25/07/2018 21:01

That was with my first pregnancy, didn’t buy much for my second! Now pregnant with my third and have a list of things I need to replace but won’t do it for a couple of months... currently 18 weeks.

SoyDora · 25/07/2018 21:03

I don’t leave it until late due to ‘tempting fate’ though. I actually find that whole concept a bit offensive... like people who have suffered losses brought it on themselves because they bought stuff early? I just didn’t see any need to buy it early.

Nothisispatrick · 25/07/2018 21:07

We started buying after the 20 week scan. 29 weeks now and have enough stuff that if baby did come early we'd be fine.

happymummy12345 · 25/07/2018 21:09

I'm superstitious so didn't get anything until the month before my due date. And I didn't have anything in the house except what I needed to take to the hospital. We didn't get much until after as we didn't want to know the sex until the birth. The rest of the stuff was brought to our house once the baby was born. And nothing was set up until we were all home as I hate that as well.

Armygirl · 25/07/2018 21:26

I’m 17 weeks and I’ve bough cloth nappies and made vests and babygrows and rompers so far. Not bought anything big as yet

Stephisaur · 25/07/2018 21:30

We were going to buy something around the 16 week mark, but literally the day we were looking I had a call from the hospital wanting me in for an emergency scan.

Once we had that (the next day) we bought something (a cuddly tigger) a couple of days later at the shops.

We went for a private sexing scan the following week (was already booked) and started buying clothes etc after that.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 25/07/2018 21:30

I never bought anything until after the 20 week scan.

molifly · 25/07/2018 21:31

Anything before 30 weeks is too early

MagicalCreatures · 26/07/2018 00:12

Buy stuff when you want to buy stuff. Personally, I waited until I’d had the 12 weeks Scan as I’d heard so many stories about MMC and I’d already had a miscarriage myself prior to this pregnancy. Not sure I believe in superstitions as I know people who have not bought stuff and ended up losing they’re baby and people that bought everything by 20 weeks and had a healthy baby.
Just do what feels right for you. Your allowed to get excited about the prospect of having a beautiful baby and wanting to plan without feeling like something awful is going to happen because you bought a baby grow at 12 weeks.
No one is going to strip you of the right to be happy because of that.
The sales are on, Mothercares are shutting down.
I’ll be getting everything I need by 30 weeks because I’ll be damned if I’m panic buying everything I need during the Christmas shopping rush. (Due 28th December) 😁

BlueBug45 · 26/07/2018 00:38

The earliest thing I bought was my travel system at about 26 weeks as it was on sale.

Personally if you doing your shopping in person, using click and collect, or the item is heavy I would do it in the second trimester when you are likely to have the most energy.

With larger items e.g. buggies, cots try and get them as late as possible if the guarantee is 1 or 2 years as somethings do randomly break within that time period.

If you are borrowing stuff again try to get it by the end of the second trimester in case you need to go shopping to add to it. It will also stop you having having too many of a rarely used item as I currently have more newborn baby hats than I will need. (In fact I think I'm now borrowing the ones I gave to friends' for their kids.)

Clarashan · 26/07/2018 01:42

Friends and family started buying clothes at 20 weeks once we knew we were having a girl, we now have LOADS and i cant see we'll use it all before she grows out of it. The only thing we have bought is a swing/ rocker. Currently 28 weeks, going to start looking for prams and car seats in the next 2/3 weeks then everything else after that.

Mousefunky · 26/07/2018 07:30

I made the mistake of buying a few things in the first trimester last year and ended up having a missed miscarriage found at 11 weeks so when I returned home and was faced with the baby things it was absolutely devastating. Haven’t made that mistake again, I waited until I was in the second trimester this time before I even considered buying anything.

ShanAmanda · 26/07/2018 07:30

I'm nearly 6 weeks. I've miscarried twice, once last month and in 2016. I just don't want to wait :D Yeah a mothercare near me will be closing shortly so hoping to buy a couple of bits and bobs.

Bought the Pram at 16 weeks as it was on clearance so less than half price. Everything else was around 20 weeks. Am 26 weeks now and just gradually collecting stuff.

CatsCatsCats11 · 26/07/2018 07:36

I started about 16 weeks when mamas and papas had a sale on my pram. I was suffering from awful spd by that point and knew I wouldn't be able to shop much by the end.

TeaAndNoSympathy · 26/07/2018 07:39

While I don’t consider ‘tempting fate’ a thing, I would consider if it will be harder to deal with a miscarriage if you are surrounded by baby things. I didn’t buy anything with DC1 until the third trimester. With DC2, I reasoned that I already had lots of baby things from DC1 so buying a few more things wouldn’t make the loss any harder if things went wrong. We saw a heartbeat at 8 weeks and I picked up things when I saw bargains from then on. It’s personal choice.

Chrisinthemorning · 26/07/2018 07:41

After 20 week scan seems sensible- not too early but still plenty of time to get ready.

Roeslein · 26/07/2018 07:56

Started buying things each month after the 12 weeks scan as we wanted to spread the expenses and avoid using savings. We made a list and just bought a couple of things from it each month. Even if you buy on the cheaper side of things, it's still a lot of money to spend all at once after 30 weeks!

I would start with getting nice maternity clothing though, as you will need that first...

BE18mum · 26/07/2018 08:10

I would hold off as pp says as it’s very upsetting seeing all the baby bits after a loss. I had two miscarriages so didn’t buy anything at all until I was 20 weeks and that was only a token baby grow. Did most of my shopping around 30+ weeks which gave us plenty of time as DD came at 39 weeks. That worked well for me although I appreciate others are different.

Also, just to say good luck! It’s not easy being pregnant after losses and I found it really hard not to worry about every little thing Flowers

GreenMeerkat · 26/07/2018 08:14

I don't believe in superstition so I don't think that buying things early is going to make anything bad happen.

However, if you want to buy things now I'd stick to clothes and small items you can put away in a drawer so if (fingers crossed it doesn't), anything were to happen, you can put them away for when you need them again.
