Sunbeds and pregnancy

Hi all please don’t grill me just want to ask a question. I’m 4+4 weeks pregnant due to go away in 8 weeks. I usually use sunbeds for about 4 weeks before I go just to get a little colour so that my skin doesn’t burn.
I’m really pale and only tan whilst using a sunbed. Yes I know they’re not good for you but only use for 3 weeks a year IF I’m going away.

Would like to know if it would be ok for me to still use them for 3 weeks whilst being pregnant

NO!

HeresMeh · 14/07/2018 12:58

No. Obviously.

PinkHeart5914 · 14/07/2018 13:01

Is anyone really daft enough to still use a sun bed? Surely especially with the fact your about to me a Mum, your health is so important.

No don’t use them while pregnant. Maybe look in to some fake tan?

Waitingonasmiley42 · 14/07/2018 13:02

Fuck sake Hmm

PlateOfBiscuits · 14/07/2018 13:03

Even when you’re not pregnant a sunbed tan only offers protection equivalent to SPF3. Using it to prepare for going away is a myth. And one that could give you cancer.

Keep your life: get a spray tan and wear decent sunscreen while you’re away.

thisonebreath · 14/07/2018 13:05

No. If you look on NHS pages it explains why - I can't link as am on phone. Your skin is even more sensitive and there's the possibility it can break down folic acid which is vital for development at this point.

And that's not even getting into the general dangers of sunbeds. I can't believe anyone still uses them tbh.

Kee80 · 14/07/2018 13:05

I'd advise not too.

I've just found out I'm 4+2 weeks pregnant. I go away in 5 weeks I'm thinking of using fake tan before I go I'm also really pale.

Anyone recommend a good one to use on holiday

DidimusStench · 14/07/2018 13:06

Being pregnant is irrelevant. You shouldn’t be using sunbeds at all. A ban for those death traps can’t come soon enough.

MamOfFrankie · 14/07/2018 13:07

From experience your skin is so much more sensitive when pregnant. I don't use sunbeds, and like you I am very fair. Even with factor 50 sun cream I am still having to be very careful about the sun as not only do I burn more easily when pregnant, but it can trigger hyperpigmentation. Please take care in the sun.

HeyDolly · 14/07/2018 13:07

No. My local tanning salon (which I go to occasionally to get my nails done) has signs up saying that pregnant women are not allowed to use the sun beds. It’s not safe.

HurricaneHalle · 14/07/2018 13:07

Can't believe this is even a question!!!

Kee80 · 14/07/2018 13:08

Also I will be to scared to sit in the sun never mind using a sunbed.
Your skin is sensitive whilst pregnant. My friend got lots of dark patches on her face whilst pregnant just by sitting in the garden

mrsb06 · 14/07/2018 13:08

Taken from World Health Organisation research (a quick Google and you'll find it).

"Using sunbeds for the first time before the age of 35 increases the risk of developing melanoma skin cancer by 59%. Regular sunbed use under the age of 30 increases the risk of skin cancer by an alarming 75%!"

I find it so sad that people actually want to do this for temporary "beauty." Don't get me wrong, I believe that most people look better with a bit of a glow, but there are other ways to do it. Especially when pregnant.

polkadotpixie · 14/07/2018 13:10

I know people who have and both they and baby were fine but it's not advised

Just be careful if you decide to use them because you need to make sure you don't overheat because it's bad for the baby and you will also burn much easier

t3xa · 14/07/2018 13:19

Haha 'don't grill me' on a post about sitting in an oven. Stupid, irresponsible and selfish irrespective of pregnancy

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 14/07/2018 13:23

Being pregnant is irrelevant.

It isn't though really. Yes, it's one of the stupidest things you can do even while not pregnant, but being pregnant does make your skin far more sensitive to the rays, so significantly more damage and potentially permanent patchiness.

MoonFaced · 14/07/2018 13:26

I can't believe the number of people that still use sunbeds. Unbelievable. No, don't use sunbeds whilst pregnant.

lydialydias · 14/07/2018 13:28

My daughter worked part time in a tanning shop whilst at uni. She said they never allowed pregnant ladies to use sun beds and it was a question always asked before the could use the bed.

dingdongdigeridoo · 14/07/2018 14:04

Be careful when you’re on holiday too. I stupidly went out without sun cream for an hour on my first day of holiday and ended up with sunburn that was almost purple. You will tan/burn SO much more easily when pregnant.

louella99 · 14/07/2018 14:14

I'm pale. I've never understood the logic of using a sunbed to 'get some colour' so that you don't burn. Use a high factor sunscreen, that will ensure you don't burn. If you have the type of skin that burns, you shouldn't be going near sunbeds let alone when pregnant.

Like others have said.. fake tan if you need to!

matchmakers · 14/07/2018 14:25

I'm pretty sure any decent salon will ask you if you are pregnant before allowing you on the beds and if you are won't let you on. Come on OP, be sensible. Pregnant women are much more sensitive to overheating generally, lying in what is essentially an oven is downright daft.

Bear in mind also that your skin might be way more sensitive to sun than normal. I'm pregnant and managed to get a burn stripe on my arm the other day and I'm not exaggerating all I did was be in the sun for about five minutes at 4pm to hang out a load of washing.

Also just generally don't use sunbeds. It's really stupid and irresponsible anyway and you're about to become a parent.

Ploppymoodypants · 14/07/2018 14:31

Take a look at this and make your own informed and educated decision.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/07/2018 14:36

I honestly can't believe sun beds are still legal.
It's one think to up your chances of skin cancer dramatically, quite another thing to inflict that on your unborn baby.
I honestly cant get my head round the fact that you have to ask.

Pigeoncat · 14/07/2018 14:58

I never use sunbeds, but got married at 17 weeks and considered a sun bed, but all NHS stuff pointed to a big fat no. It probably won’t hurt the baby but could hurt YOU.

However, faketan is totally safe to use, if you don’t mind the mess and the smell!

peachypetite · 14/07/2018 15:00

You do know it offers no protection as a base tan don't you?
