Sunbeds and pregnancy

Hi all please don’t grill me just want to ask a question. I’m 4+4 weeks pregnant due to go away in 8 weeks. I usually use sunbeds for about 4 weeks before I go just to get a little colour so that my skin doesn’t burn.
I’m really pale and only tan whilst using a sunbed. Yes I know they’re not good for you but only use for 3 weeks a year IF I’m going away.

Would like to know if it would be ok for me to still use them for 3 weeks whilst being pregnant

You shouldn't even be having a hot bath in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy as a raise in your core body temp can cause a miscarriage so the heat from a sunbed is a definite no!

@Trinny80 whether you use sunbeds when not pregnant is obviously up to you, you are an adult that can make your own risk assessment.

However, when pregnant, you are more sensitive to UV and can develop liver conditions associated result. It also breaks down folic acid which could affect development. There's also something called "mask of pregnancy" which is essentially temporary vitiligo, where some of your skin tans but some remains pale, the risk of this increases with more UV exposure. It's not a great look!

So personally I wouldn't, and I would use a high factor suncream whilst on holiday.

Madness

Have a good spray tan and keep the suncream up! I’d never had a spray tan before pregnancy but I had one for my wedding last month as I was more pale than I would usually be by this time of year due to the pregnancy and I’m never loailing back! I’d had one every month if I could 😂

Nonononono.

Apart from the risks mentioned upthread you’ll very likely develop melasma, which will leave you with permanent pigmentation patches.

there are three products which are totally legal and dangerous when used as directed. They are cigarettes, sunbeds and socket covers.

if even the staff say dont use when pregnant, ffs listen!

Unfortunately, spray tans aren’t recommended either. I wanted to get one but apparently it’s something to do with inhaling the mist. I used some gradual tanning lotion instead but still look like a ghost.

no you don t. And it is better than looking like a leather handbag which is what is visible through the window of our local cancer shop.

I can't believe anyone still uses them, and I say that as an avid ex user.

I'm extremely pale and look much better when I'm a bit brown, but I always fake it. Use Clarins fake tan - they do a gel or a cream. It smells nice, doesn't streak, is never orange and you can build it up. I did that - plus factor 50 on my recent holiday (was 22 weeks preg at the time). As other posters have said, your skin will tan / burn more emphatically when you're pregnant.
I understand your position re: using a sun bed to avoid burning and have actually done this in the past, so whilst I don't blame you, a bit of reading up will reveal how incredibly bad it is for you, pregnant or not. Save yourself the risk and the hassle.
