When did you first see a midwife? (Second pregnancy)

Just wondering when people first saw a midwife?

This is my second pregnancy, I'm 8 weeks exactly.
I'm classed as high risk because I use a wheelchair full time and I have a high BMI.

On my first pregnancy it seemed like I was seen very quickly by a midwife after I had seen my GP, but it was ten years ago so difficult to remember how many weeks I was.

Would you say this is normal? If so it'll put my mind at ease.

I'm on my first pregnancy. The booking appointment should be between 8-10 weeks (you don't actually mention when it is in your post) so that your dating scan can be booked in for around 12 weeks.

BlueBug45 · 09/07/2018 14:21

Are you in an area where you self refer or have to go through a GP?

My maternity list of appointments has the schedule for both first pregnancies and subsequent pregnancies so booking appointment and 12 week scan as normal then it deviates. However as I'm categorised as high risk due to age, my appointments are different and based on a schedule decided by my consultant.

Rockandrollwithit · 09/07/2018 14:21

I think it's normal. I had my booking in appt at around 10 weeks and was high risk also.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

BlueBug45 · 09/07/2018 14:23

Forgot to say - phone up your GPs receptionist now and ask them whether you need to see a GP first or do you self-refer. Different areas do it differently.

Pepper123123 · 09/07/2018 14:27

@BlueBug45 I'm not sure. I rang my GP to ask what the next step should be after finding out I'm pregnant, the receptionist asked a few questions which indicated I'd need to see a GP before going on the midwife list.

I saw the GP (was a strange, pointless appointment where I had to make a point of suggesting higher strength Folic Acid, which she refused to prescribe, then called the next day and said she'd looked into it and decided I did indeed need it)

After seeing the GP I was added onto the midwive's list at 5 weeks.

In my area booking appointments are between 8-11 weeks. The cut off is suppose to be 10 but it depends when they can fit you in.

After the booking appointment if they decide you are high risk you will be assigned to a consultant and given an appointment.

You get a scan at 12 weeks regardless.

Both my booking and 12 week scan appointment came in the same letter even though they were done in different clinics at different times.

ParkheadParadise · 09/07/2018 14:37

I'm not much help I didn't see the midwife till I was nearly 5mths with my 2nd pregnancy. Went to the doctors with a urine infection and it turned out to be dd2.GrinGrin

Theweasleytwins · 09/07/2018 14:42

I first saw mine at 14 weeks because I hadn't realised I was pregnant until about 2 weeks before😅turned out I was more like 16 weeks at the first appointment when I had the scan the next week😅

To be fair my first pregnancy was a twin one so loads of symptoms as opposed to some minor nausea

Pepper123123 · 09/07/2018 14:43

@BlueBug45 thank you. So I should expect to hear something within the next fortnight by the sound of it.

I think I'm just anxious to get the ball rolling, like most are I suppose.

I was consultant-led on my last pregnancy, so I imagine things would be similar this time round. I'll hang tight and wait to hear from them.

@ParkheadParadise Haha! Wow! That must have been a bit of a shock!

I remember waiting in the hospital for a scan in my last pregnancy and chatting to the lady next to me who had discovered she was pregnant a week previously. She was seven months gone already!

I was 10 weeks with baby 2 and 3.

I’d probably book one now if I were you OP.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 09/07/2018 14:46

Booking appointment, 8 weeks ish?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 09/07/2018 14:46

Booked it immediately so at 3 weeks ish.

Pepper123123 · 09/07/2018 14:48

@Theweasleytwins that sounds similar to me with my first, though just one baby.

I'm amazed now that I didn't realise, considering how very pregnant I feel already.

My DP is the son of a twin and has a few twins in his family that he knows of. I wonder if there's just the one this time or there's another little one in there too!

Pepper123123 · 09/07/2018 14:49

@JustVent in my area we have to wait until we're called for a booking in.
It's terribly frustrating, but I am exceptionally impatient Grin

13 weeks I think, I found out at four weeks but I couldn’t be bothered with the midwifes they were useless with my first so I only went at 13 week because I wanted a scan to check everything was ok with the baby.

Mousefunky · 09/07/2018 15:13

I didn’t have my booking appointment until 12 weeks this time which meant my dating scan happened on the last possible day it can at 13+6. Really stressful time especially after two MMC last year but there you go, services are stretched across the board. My other booking appointments were around 8-9 weeks.

WhirlingTurkey · 09/07/2018 16:00

Second pregnancy and saw GP at ~8 weeks and midwife at ~9 weeks.

gryffen · 09/07/2018 19:59

I'm Glasgow and having daughter in Paisley so my midwife saw me at 12 weeks, 17 and 22. She refused to see me again after that since I am consultant based and due to that I'm 6 weeks late starting clexane - she's got her arse in a sling now for it compliments of my consultant.

Parkheadparadise - COYBIG 🤗

ParkheadParadise · 09/07/2018 20:23

@gryffen

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/07/2018 20:50

I have seen mine today. I’m 6+3. They refer directly from 6 weeks on at my surgery.

gryffen · 09/07/2018 21:19

Lol totally blooper there.

Daughter born in 2014 - having a bhoy this time round.

(Due date is flag day) 🤣🤣🤣🤣

ParkheadParadise · 09/07/2018 22:05

@gryffen
You've not long to go 3+ weeks.

Wellthisunexpected · 09/07/2018 22:39

Ours won't see you before 8 weeks, and then they book you in for your booking in at around 10.
