I'm just over 12 weeks with my first and I'm extremely excited! Ive waited a lot of years to get to this state so really looking forward to buying things.

When did you start and what was your first purchase?

Straight away, even before pregnancy with subsequent babies. I'm a sucker for baby clothes so always been weak willed when faced with cute tiny clothes. I love unisex baby clothes anyway, comfy baby grows and rompers in rainbow colours, yellow, green, grey and white, cloud prints, ducks, animals, all lovely and unisex. It would be sensible to start a payment plan with somewhere like motnercare though.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 09/07/2018 11:40

It's a personal decision but we don't buy anything until after the 20 week scan. This is because we've known people who have had bad news at their 20 week scan and in that situation I think, for me, having baby stuff around the house would make it even more difficult to deal with.

SoyDora · 09/07/2018 11:42

After the 20 week scan for us, and then only one ‘token’ thing, I think we started buying properly at around 30 weeks.
It will still be exciting buying things later on! If you get it all now you’ll have nothing to do at the end Grin

InDreamland · 09/07/2018 11:43

I was wondering the same thing. Was gonna leave it until October/November (due January) but not sure if that's too late. Being anxious i don't want to buy early and jinx the pregnancy. It's tempting though to buy stuff when all the sales and promotions are on - have you been tempted to take advantage of special deals and sales even if early?

PinstripeElephant · 09/07/2018 11:50

I really don't mean to put you off, I promise that's not my intention!

I started buying bits when I was around 12 weeks pregnant first time, but that ended in a miscarriage. Had two more after that, then fell pregnant with DS. I kept buying throughout all four pregnancies, but I wasn't too bothered about DS having stuff that 'belonged' to a previous potential sibling if you see what I mean.

I think start whenever you're comfortable with it. There aren't any rules Smile

Narya · 09/07/2018 11:53

About 24/25 weeks I think. Didn't want to jinx it, even though that's obviously nonsense. I did a lot of research on most of the items before then though so had basically picked everything, just didn't order until quite late on.

SamanthaH92 · 09/07/2018 11:54

With first DD one outfit after 12 week scan, after 20 weeks i started buying a few bits here and there. We got so much in presents we didn't actually need to buy much but we didn't know this. This time round i bought 2 outfits in the sale as first outfits. I kept everything from DD1 and this is DD2 so can re-use all clothes from newborn to 2 years lol x

Poptart4 · 09/07/2018 17:56

Im 28 weeks and just bought my first pack of nappies but that's it so far.

Im putting off buying things as i dont have the space to store loads of baby stuff. Im going to sort my hospital bag first then start getting things in. Hope to have everything by 36/37 weeks.

Stephisaur · 09/07/2018 18:07

We bought a little tigger bear at 14 weeks just because it was cute.

We weren’t going to buy any clothes or anything until after the 20 week scan, then it was going to be after our private scan this weekend where we’re finding out the sex.

However, yesterday (at 16+5) we bought a little outfit. Maybe more for a boy than a girl but baby will wear it anyway! We had to have a mini anomaly scan last Thursday and all seemed fine so we decided to just get it as it was in the sale :)

Spudina · 09/07/2018 18:07

I'm really superstitious. I only bought the bare minimum (a car seat and pram and some vests/baby grows/ nappies and Moses basket) before DD1 was born, and all very late in pregnancy. But I wouldn't have any of it in the house till the last minute and nothing where I could see it. I was extreme! What I learnt with DD1 was you actually need less than you think.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 09/07/2018 18:20

I bought the travel system at 15 weeks because it was discounted at the time and money was a little tight. Everything else came after that as I saw it.

Markygirl1995 · 09/07/2018 18:21

Ordered a personalised outfit for when baby is born first outfit that was at 10 weeks just this baby is our second due to a lost at 8/9 weeks so that was over our safe zone I suppose - started to buy more stuff at 16 weeks when we found out the gender only recently started buying big bits such as cot, pram etc and currently 26weeks this week

Flamingo84 · 09/07/2018 18:30

I started buying bits after about 15 weeks because there were loads of sales on.

Personally, I felt that if something bad did happen then the stuff I’d bought wouldn’t make it feel any better or worse. Things can take a turn at any point in the pregnancy so I resolved to not dwell on the What ifs and just get bits as and when.

I’m a planner and the thought of waiting until 30+ weeks would drive me insane! I’m 32 weeks now and the thought of shopping for the big things and putting them together at this stage is awful! 😀

BertieBotts · 09/07/2018 18:49

I wanted to get one thing after the first scan once we passed the 10 week point because I was paranoid about miscarriage/MMC before that point. Then I know DH was really reluctant to buy stuff but I started researching and assembling pinterest/amazon lists because I was going crazy and I wanted to buy but didn't at the same time.

I decided that it would be important to get the pushchair and car seat decided early on so that we could keep an eye out for deals, so I got researching on those and had my shortlist by 15 weeks. We actually managed to find my top budget one second hand later on for a real bargain, so I'm glad we did this.

The lists were also helpful because when we started to tell people, we found that offers came in of free/cheap used stuff and I was able to say yes we have this, we need that, etc, and could slowly tick things off the list.

I think we had everything by about 30 weeks barring some items like nappies, wipes, shampoo etc - I still have a couple of those things to buy but nothing massively urgent, and I've done another little clothing order this week as I couldn't resist but I think I'm going to go over the list and say stop now! Just put together things for the hospital bag and if we have forgotten anything then we'll have to buy it later.

I like taking advantage of sales and offers and things - we've literally spent €357 and that's EVERYTHING we could have possibly needed bar a few more nappies, some wipes and baby bath wash (and they even say that isn't particularly necessary) - and I will probably need to get a couple of breastfeeding-friendly tops but I will check mine and see what I have already.

Then some nice-to-have items - the adapters to put the car seat on the pram, car seat base DH wants (literally, the second most expensive item Grin) and some more clothes which I just think are cute and some specific books that I want. We have been given a few items as gifts but mainly this is shopping around for discounts, finding hand me down freebies and second hand items. We will still have a couple of bigger items to get as the baby gets bigger but for the newborn period, we're good.

melse2964 · 09/07/2018 18:59

Id say start whenever you like but like most ppl i started after my 20 week scan just picking up bits i made a big list. And half the stuff didnt end up using/needing Congrats

kirinm · 09/07/2018 20:06

I'm 32 weeks and still haven't bought anything. After many miscarriages I still feel like I'm tempting fate but have decided I will buy from around 35-36 weeks.

yikesanotherbooboo · 09/07/2018 22:28

Interesting how personal this is!
I bought Moses basket, a couple of 3 packed of vests and babygros, cellular blankets and sheets and a hat after I stopped work at 32 weeks. I ordered a pram and made a few odds and ends. We were moving 4 weeks after edd and had Christmas staying with family to buy for. I was superstitious but also had practical reasons for not acquiring a lot of clutter.DH went and bought the car seat after the baby was born. Those were the days of 5 days laying in in hospital after having a baby which was great for establishing feeding and resting .

MagicalCreatures · 09/07/2018 22:28

I’m coming up 16 weeks and have bought myself a rocking chair and a changing mat so far. That’s all. But I’m constantly researching the big things like prams and cots etc so that as soon as they come on sale I will get them. Doesn’t mater how far gone I will be. If the right thing cane up at the right price tomorrow, I would buy it. Would be so annoyed if I waited 3 more weeks and then it cost me double the price x

TroubledLichen · 09/07/2018 22:33

About 30 weeks. No way would I buy anything before the 20 week scan.

happymummy12345 · 09/07/2018 22:39

Not until the month before my due date. I'm very superstitious and didn't even have anything in the house except what I needed to take to the birth centre.
The first thing we got was the pram. Then had a shopping trip to get literally just the hospital essentials. Everything else was got once the baby was born, we didn't want to know the sex until the birth, so we couldn't get much anyway.

Thetimehascometo · 10/07/2018 00:12

We started at around 14 weeks, bought the travel system at 16 because it was on offer! Baby was born at 34 weeks so we were glad we were ready early!!

splendidsqueak7 · 10/07/2018 02:34

I got a tont jellycat bunny toy at 5w, more as a kind of visualisation aid for me than for future dc! Then didn’t buy much else significant unless it was in a sale (e.g the gorgeous cord Jojo dungarees I found heavily discounted!). After 20w scan bought the Ama Wrap sling so we could practise tying it, and after 24 weeks bought the car seat (we thought if we had to go in and have an early baby, we wouldn’t want to then spend time buying a car seat). 29+3 now, have decided on a pram which we’ll order soon. Just go with what feels right for you! The only reason I’d hang back on getting things is that sometimes people are mega keen to offload baby gear: we got a bouncer, travel cot and 2 play gyms that way!

splendidsqueak7 · 10/07/2018 02:37

*’tiny’ jllycat bunny toy: blaming any further typos on this 2am indegestion attack.

snowy1982 · 10/07/2018 07:30

I ordered the big ticket items (travel system, furniture) after 20 week scan as at the time the travel system I wanted had a long order period. Once I hit 30 weeks I started buying other bits like blankets, nappies, vests etc

Wellthisunexpected · 10/07/2018 09:53

After the 20 week scan, though found an amazing deal on our pram so bought that earlier and just put it in the loft.
