crib or moses basket?

don't like the idea of putting baby on floor or on flimsy skinny wooden stands that all seem de rigeur with moses baskets but...I do see the advantage of being able to move the baby around the house when asleep

however I really do really like the traditional crib - but it may be less practical for a sleeping baby during day

any insights would be helfpful....

ta!

I went for moses basket for both of mine, easy to move around and the wooden stand was definately sturdy enough for mine (both were big babies) they slept in them until they were around 3-4 mth old...fine, no prob at all.

we went for moses basket each time - easy to move. WIth dd1 - we kept her downstairs with us until we went to bed and could then just take her moses basket upstairs and put it on the stand. Our stand was wooden but not flimsy.

We now live in a different house and again - we can have the moses basket and put babe to 'bed' in that whilst we are down in the family room watching tv etc and then take her up to bed when we go.

My mum has a crib that she wanted to lend us - the one we all slept in as babies BUT it took up too much room in our bedroom - moses basket fits nicely beside our bed.

Moses basket. It makes for a portable baby

my dd2 was 9lb 7oz and very long and she fitted fine in our moses basket - BUT i suspect it was on the big side - seen others that were smaller.

hunkermunker · 26/05/2007 23:55

I had both (crib was second-hand and I only had it for DS2, moses basket was loaned).

We initially had the crib downstairs for daytime and evening sleep and the moses basket upstairs for nighttime.

Then we had the crib upstairs for nighttime when DS2 outgrew the moses basket.

Then I had DS2 in bed with me till he was 7mo and learnt to crawl, fast, to the edge of the bed, when he went into a cot in our room.

He slept best in bed next to me, really.

So maybe a crib for downstairs for daytime and evening (because they're bigger and last longer than moses baskets) and co-sleep when you go to bed?

juuule · 26/05/2007 23:55

I kept mine in a moses basket until they were around 4 months (might have been longer)and they weighed up to 8lb 14 at birth. They were swaddled and snug and slept well like that.

harpsichordcarrier · 26/05/2007 23:56

moses basket.
advice on cot death prevention is to have the baby sleep in the same room as you for daytime naps too. a moses basket really helps. and you can take it with you if you go to someone's house or stay overnight

juuule · 26/05/2007 23:57

Advantage is that they can fall asleep in the basket near you downstairs and you can take them up with you without disturbing them.

bewilderbeast · 26/05/2007 23:59

crib, they last for longer, you can see the baby through the sides when you are in bed, you can take them apart store them and use them for baby numebr 2. They can be cheaper. Ours was about 50 from mothercare, much cheaper than a lot of moses baskets and we only took him out of it this week. He is 7 months old.

hunkermunker · 27/05/2007 00:01

HC, DS2 did sleep in the same room as me for naps.

Actually, so did DS1 iirc - except I was asleep too with DS1 if I could possibly arrange it...

MrsJohnCusack · 27/05/2007 03:21

DS is 11.5 weeks, 64cm long and 15 lbs 2oz (10 5 and 57cm at birth) and still just about fits in the Moses basket - he actually seems to quite like the security of it around him - think he'll have to go in the cot soon but I am terrified of ruining his fab sleeping. Think it's prob a fairly long one though.
so I second the moses basket - cribs look lovely but v.bulky to store afterwards and even more expensive for such a short time of usage. moses basket portable for round the house AND useful for sleeping at other people's houses as well.

berolina · 27/05/2007 03:48

ds actually used his moses basket (basically for daytime naps) until he could push himself up to stand, which was IIRC 7 months or so, and it then obviously wasn't safe any more. He was (and is) small, though, and our mb was big. At night he slept in a mini-bedside cot type thing until he got too mobile and then in a cot next to our bed.

oldwomanwholivedinashoe · 27/05/2007 03:52

We had a traditional type mamas and papas pram for the day and then used cot for night. mine were too big for mini crib or moses basket. i also feel that moses baskets are flimsy! Mine were big babies so I had visions of them falling through the bottom!!!

whomovedmychocolate · 27/05/2007 04:45

I started DD off in a cot bed - huge I know but I am crap at assembling furniture and this way I only have to do it once in seven years!

Also she would have been out of a moses basket in a month and they always look a bit flimsy to me.

lisad123 · 27/05/2007 07:33

had both, moses basket down stairs and crib upstairs. I had a C section so carrying a baby and basket upstairs wasnt something i could do. I used moses basket for day sleeps and always made her sleep in crib.

co sleep and sling is best

oooooh

kateyp · 27/05/2007 07:37

A sleeping baby? What is one of those?

snugglebumnappies · 27/05/2007 07:42

OMG how many of you actually had babies who settled in crbs/moses baskets nonne of my thre LOs would sleep anywhere but in a sling during te day

pucca · 27/05/2007 08:31

I just wanted to add that my ds was 9lb 6oz at birth and 57 cm long and he slept in moses basket for a few months there is no way he would fall out as being so heavy it weighed it down iykwim, it wasn't flimsy at all, and as someone else said he was very snug in it, i swaddled him too, and he loved being in it.

bumbly · 27/05/2007 09:00

wow thanks for all your insights...i too am now thinking that although a crib is my fave choice I may have to invest in a moses basket as well for downstairs/daytime

one thing i want to point out to those that say moses baskets are cheaper..actually by the time you buy a stand they really aren't and are the same price as a good crib...that is the impression have got so far shopiing around at all mayor baby stores

i still think moses baskets look very flimsy and rickety on the stand...she says with visions of partner knocking the LO down when waking up in middle of night.....

I had a crib for DD1 and she absolutely hated it. For DD2 I got a 2nd hand moses basket (agree they ae so expensive) and just bought a new matress - DD2 slept like a dream and it was so convenient. We also travelled a fair bit to go and see family (Scotland, Bristol, Isle of Wight and Cornwall) moses basket was very portable and light.

I now need to sell mine (with stand) if you're interested let me know and I can send you a photo.

bumbly · 27/05/2007 09:04

or instead of investing in a moses basket...i wonder if i could use the carrycot of a travel system should i purchase one...or is that not really "ideal"
(not best for baby etc)

hmmm..need to think about this one...

OP posts:
mishw · 27/05/2007 09:31

I think that most of the carrycots are not suitable to use as a cot for a longtime as they are not breathable - there is one though - I just can't think of it at the moment - will put thinking cap on!
