Unstable lie + c-section

Hi! Will try and keep this brief. If my baby is now head down but has been pretty mobile up until now (breech/oblique/transverse) can I still have a section at 39 weeks, just in case baby moves and I end up with an emergency section anyway?

Any midwives out there or people who've been in the same boat?

Thank you Smile

If your baby is now in a head down position, there is no reason to schedule a c-section.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/07/2018 17:18

Thanks! Would I be able to request one based on the fact that I feel like utter shit and am quite scared that it's all going to go wrong?!

I think every pregnant woman at 39 weeks feels like shit and is terrified. Unfortunately doctors don't think this is a reason for an elective section. It's a major abdominal operation and comes with big risks and possible complications as with all abdominal surgery! A natural labour is always better, try not to worry. The risks are fairly low overall.

I know you're right, but......Sad I was gearing up to have the baby by c-section, which was booked already and I've now cancelled.

I know everyone feels like this at the end, too. I just want to hide in a hole.

Why did you cancel your section if you had one booked already?

elliejjtiny · 04/07/2018 18:30

How many weeks pregnant are you now? I had a section due to unstable lie. My waters had gone though so I was at risk of cord prolapse.

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 04/07/2018 18:34

In the uk you can now decide to have a elective c section.

As much as its scary vaginal is alot better for recovery.

I have had a induction vaginal birth and c section due to dd being breech.

I am booked in friday for a foley induction as they cannot use a persarry in me if it fails i need a c section. Im really dreading if i need a csection as it was really worse pain wise after birth than during labour with my first.

I’m in a similar position, Baby was unstable from 37-39 weeks but is now head down at 40+2. It’s frustrating because you think it’s going to be over and then you are still waiting.
This is my 3rd so i’m in the headspace that it’s ok because i’ve had previous vaginal births, but I can understand your anxiety. Most babies don’t move again after 39 weeks and a c-sect is major surgery.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/07/2018 18:46

Sanguin- I don't know! I think I just thought that was what I had to do.

Thank you all for answering.Flowers I'm thinking of calling my midwife tomorrow for a chat.

Ellie- I'm 38+3.

Skye- thanks for sharing your experience- hope your pessary works this time.

I’m sure you can speak to your midwife and request an elective and having a unstable lie should be a factor to consider.
I have a 10 day old delivered by EMCS after having a unstable lie. They broke my waters to try and induce as she was head down and in a good position (head minimally engaged). Baby descended when they broke waters but I wasn’t progressing and decision made for EMCS, when they went in baby had turned oblique during labour which is apparently true unstable lie.

mayhew · 04/07/2018 19:38

One of my clients had an elective CS planned for breech at 39+5. Morning of op, baby had turned! They cancelled her!
She had a spontaneous vaginal birth 10 days later....

mayhew · 04/07/2018 19:46

Oh, and she was glad in the end!

BrutusMcDogface · 04/07/2018 21:06

Ice - I'm trying not to obsess over where my baby is lying, but I'm still not convinced he's not going to move again! I would hate that to happen during labour.

mayhew - thanks again for sharing! It all helps.

A natural labour is always better

That, is utter bobbins.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/07/2018 22:16

A natural labour isn't always possible, is it? I agree. I suppose it's better if it is possible, though.....

still feeling anxious and poking at my belly...convinced baby has moved again!

I know so many babies/children who simply wouldn't be here (and possibly neither would their mums) if it weren't for Caesarean sections.

Every women has a choice of Vbac or C section and they should discuss it with you and respect your wishes. Its in the NICE guidlines. Have you already had a c section? X

unicorncow · 04/07/2018 22:57

I had to have a c-section last time and I'm praying for a normal delivery this time! It's so much harder recovery from a c-section. It's your choice and I'm sure of you really really want one they will consider it but honestly recovery from a normal birth is much easier

BrutusMcDogface · 05/07/2018 09:25

I haven't had a c-section before- my other babies were vaginal births.

OP posts:
SamanthaH92 · 05/07/2018 09:32

I'm not 100% sure, because i have had a previous c section but i am sure you can request and they have to follow your wishes. I had a c section with DD1 and have requested another this time round and they said yes straight away. The consultant said it was up to me and they would do as i wish x

BrutusMcDogface · 05/07/2018 10:21

Thank you Samantha Flowers

I've had high blood pressure and am currently feeling so anxious it can't be good. Not sure what to do with myself to be honest! Want to ring the mw but not sure what to say! Agh.

OP posts:
SamanthaH92 · 05/07/2018 10:49

I think it will be a consultant you need to discuss it with not midwife but you can always ring and speak to them so you can get a consultant appointment x

BrutusMcDogface · 05/07/2018 11:12

I just called and cried down the phone at the midwife! Feel so silly. She basically said wait and see what happens. When I go into labour they'll have me straight in to check presentation. Anxiety still through the roof though. Thanks again x
