Annoying things people say to pregnant women

So I am only in my first trimester (8+6) and not many people know that I am pregnant BUT......

Already I am finding myself irritated by comments from the people around me...for example:

  • having mild cramp and feeling nauseous...my husband says that it must be something I have eaten, I reply no I am just pregnant, and he continues to quiz what I've eaten
  • had nausea from very early on and has been pretty constant until recently...my mum says, it's far too early for symptoms...I say well what can I say I have them?? Mum just repeats her comment again and I am made to feel I am making it up?
  • staying at a friend's and absolutely shattered, so I take a nap, friend knows I am pregnant but tells me I am sleeping too much and that is making me lethargic.

Is it just me? This post is semi-lighthearted but I feel like until I have a huge bump everyone thinks I am making things up??

Im now 38+1 and i keep getting the comments "oh your bumps still high youve got abit to drop yet" Angry might aswell tell me baby will be late Hmm x

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 26/06/2018 15:58

There were a few when I was pregnant (but I am probably equally guilty of doing it to others!) however, the best (worst?) was just after birth. My own father visiting me in hospital on the day my first son was born... looked at me and laughingly said ‘haha... have you still got one in there!?’ Whilst pointing to my still wobbly post partum belly.

It’s a bloody good job I love and know the tactless old grump and half expected it! From anyone else that comment would have had me in tears (or jail).

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/06/2018 16:41

Urgh.

“STILL being sick?” With a kind of incredulous tone.

Yes I am. At 31 weeks. I’m on the shit they give you when you have chemo to stop you barfing. I am still barfing.

Also:

Have you tried ginger?
Have you tried crackers/mint tea?
But it’s the afternoon!
It should get better after .. 12 weeks/16weeks... etc.

You can tell your mum it’s possible to feel sick from days after conception.

Terramirabilis · 26/06/2018 17:59

Just wait till you get near the end! Once you're visibly, obviously pregnant you'll get all the randoms making comments to you in public with the same "what are you having", "when are you due", "is this your first?" Plus some people telling you how big you are and how you can't possibly still have six weeks to go and others insisting they can't believe you're that far along because you're so tiny. Just let it wash over you.

Roeslein · 26/06/2018 19:10

When talking about career plans: "I guess your priorities will change now."

Funny how my husband didn't get that one once, despite him planning extended paternity leave...

yummychocolate · 26/06/2018 19:14

"Have you tried ginger biscuits?"

Makes me want to scream.

Bibijayne · 26/06/2018 19:19

I'm not quite 5'2, really short torso. Baby is already head down. I have gestational diabetes but - except for bump and boobs - not very big. I'm 29+4.

The amount of people who say I look ready to drop is infuriating... Or who comment on the size of my bump (usually saying it's big). Baby is at 70th percentile - my bump is normal size... I'm just short and this baby likes headbutting my cervix. Stop commenting on the size of my bump unless you're a medical professional!

TingleTots · 26/06/2018 19:25

Was it planned?

Havetothink · 26/06/2018 19:37

"They invented condoms you know? " co-worker joking
"Are you sure it's not twins?" co-worker + neighbor
"Are you sure it's just one?" grandparent + co-worker + neighbor
"Are you sure you're not further along" co-worker
"Fatty" co-workerjoking
"I'd wear a support belt if I were you" my mum

It was a planned second pregnancy, definitely one baby which they all know and yes I already have a support belt. But seriously, I feel big enough without people's input.

heytherehello · 26/06/2018 19:45

"Wow you can't have much longer left" ..., next person "reeeaally?! You don't look that big"

Alanares89 · 26/06/2018 19:51

AMEN!

I’m still being sick at 19 weeks which I’ve had since week 6 and people still ask if am being sick while walking in on me with my head down the lavvy pan! Nah am just here for the banter 😊😊😊

CoodleMoodle · 26/06/2018 19:55

"Are you expecting twins?"

I'm not! I'm 37 weeks with DC2. I'm thin with a huge bump. I was bigger with DD but nobody asked me that last time...

byanyothernamerose · 26/06/2018 20:03

I am soooo glad I'm not alone! And worried because clearly it isn't going to get any better..

I told my mum that nibbling on oatcakes was helping my nausea and got told I was wrong for eating them, i needed to be eating cream crackers. I said nope, oatcakes are working but again got told I was wrong?!

I think I basically slept all my way through to 14 weeks. Starting very very soon after I found out at 10dpo. So yes, you can have symptoms this early.
Regarding what you feel as a huge bump, it's most probably bloating. I kept thinking I cannot believe how people don't notice I'm pregnant with this bump but it was actually just bloating until around 15-16 weeks.
Your partner is still getting used to it, it took ages for mine to realise that it's not just in my head.
To annoying comments.... I found men at work we're worst. And strangers annoyed me. I'm 39+2 now and the looks I get these days... like they've never seen a pregnant woman before.

ccorbbs · 26/06/2018 20:15

"Are you going to find out what you're having?" drives me up the wall, I hear it daily! :)

TinyTerror1 · 26/06/2018 21:07

I'm 25 weeks and get people asking "are you still working?" a lot. Like there's a magic money tree and I can just sit around doing nothing because I'm pregnant 🙄

TinyTerror1 · 26/06/2018 21:09

And OP - whatever stops your nausea is fine. Oatcakes are healthy and the fibre will really come in useful Blush

Foodylicious · 26/06/2018 21:12

Tell them all to fuck off.
I had nausea and exhaustion from 4- 5 weeks.
By 7 weeks I was on medication for the sickness.

It's so variable person to person.

Last of I was off sick from weeks 6-12 (finally gave in and started meds at 11 weeks)

Teateaandmoretea · 26/06/2018 21:18

Ginger biscuits and ginger tea. I remember vomiting both up well. Dickheads.

Or even worse 'you're pregnant not ill' Angry. Well apart from hyperemesis and not being able to walk with spd that is Hmm

smithsinarazz · 26/06/2018 23:08

I'm amazed at your mum, given that she's presumably been pregnant.

I remember DH saying "You can't feel sick all the time!" but he can be forgiven. It surprised me, too. xx

Atthebottomofthegarden · 26/06/2018 23:16

Think I was nauseous from about 6 weeks to 16 weeks. And after that if I got too tired or didn’t eat regularly. The worst time for me was around 5.30, hungry and tired as I left work.

Sorry you’ve got a while to go with it yet!

Just bite your husband’s head off if he does that again, he’s got learn! 😁

Atthebottomofthegarden · 26/06/2018 23:16

To learn even...

CocoLoco87 · 26/06/2018 23:24

Ginger sodding biscuits DONT WORK ON HYPEREMESIS!!! AHHHHHHHH still feel the rage 2 years on Grin

grace7 · 27/06/2018 00:04

I'm quite small and had a small bump... "Your baby is going to be tiny!", he was 7lbs14. Ha Ha.

SomebodysNotInBedYet · 27/06/2018 00:23

For me it's 'wow you must find it's going so quickly!' which I get loads for some reason. Er, no? It's felt exactly like 27 weeks and probably longer while I was stuck in first trimester hell. Can't really say that though. Also, 'you must be getting excited now!' which I just have no idea how to respond to. I'm as excited as I was when I found out, but it's still 3 months to go yet so I'm still plodding along really.
