What was your triple test result?

Have had a high triple test result and have amnio booked for Tuesday.

I am trying to console myself to look at it the other way so it doesn't look too bad.

I'm 37.

What were your triple test results?

With DD my result for the triple test was 1 in 64. The way I looked at it was that I wouldnt back a horse to win with those odds IYKWIM.
I had an amnio and DD is fine.
Conversely my triple test with this pregnancy came out at 1 in 362, 4 years later!! ( I am now 37)
The triple test is an indicator only and there are alot of strange results IMO

kittylette · 24/05/2007 08:26

My first was 1:26,000

I didn't have the tests in my 2nd pregnancy.

My aunt (36) had a high result too and was offered an amnio, but refused - her son is a happy, completely healthy 6 month old now.

I'm sure it will all be fine!

elclose · 24/05/2007 08:28

well i have no experience but my sil had a high result ,one in four chance of downs baby with heart condition she is 33 she had amnio but everything was fine , just remember whatever your chances you have a higher chance of there not being a problem, good luck

fillyjonk · 24/05/2007 08:29

my friend had, not once, but TWICE, a 1/50 result (I felt like crap the first time-I had just had mine back and they were 1/4000)

I do feel for you, she was panikced (unsprisingly).

But both times it was FINE

Pixiefish · 24/05/2007 08:34

That's the way I'm trying to look at it. i wouldn't back a horse with these odds unless it was in the Grand National but I am still worried. Can't have the amnio till next Tuesday due to dates and won't get the results back till the Friday or Monday. Also worrying about the risks involved with the amnio and scared stiff of what I will do if I get a bad result

fillyjonk · 24/05/2007 08:48

yes they are really good odds

imagine if you had a 1/50 chance of a lottery win, would you bet your house on it? i wouldn't.

LieselVentouse · 24/05/2007 09:07

Mine was 1/200 V. high risk (I was 30) I had amnio and everything was fine. This time I had no risk (Im 36) so havent had follow up

FrannyandZooey · 24/05/2007 09:10

I didn't have the test with ds because I didn't feel it had any relevance to me. Would possibly feel differently now we have an existing family if that makes sense.

It seemed to me a high test result was likely to cause a lot of worry for a very slight possibility. Sorry you have this worry

Pixiefish · 24/05/2007 09:15

Tha's it Franny- I already have a dd and have to think about her quality of life. Otherwise i don't think I'd go for the amnio

OP posts:
schneebly · 24/05/2007 09:19

Mine for DS1 was 1 in 360 or something and that was pretty high considering I was only 23 and in good health with no family history of anything relevant. DS1 is in perfect health - his only issue is a small patch on eczema on his scalp!

FrannyandZooey · 24/05/2007 09:58

Pixie I do understand, it can change the way you approach this. You must do what you think it best for you and family.

Pixiefish · 24/05/2007 10:22

Thank you all for your support. It's sucha horrible time- the not knowing is really freaking me out. I asked if I could have a scan or something today- I understand that they can't do the amnio till next week but thought that a scan would help a bit- really grasping at straws here. Can't have a scan as it wouldn't tell anything anyway

Anyone else care to share

I dont know if i had triples or not

But i know that before they did the measurements, my risk was 1 in 90 but after they input the measurements etc it came out at 1 in 1,922, which I'm really pleased about!

I'm sure you'll be fine Pixiefish!

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 16:06

Was that measurements from an ultrasound scan RGPargy.

I am changing/fluctuating my mind about the amnio but dh is pretty determined that we do it. He does say that it's ultimately my decision and he would abide by me if I decided against it- Just don't want to risk a mc.

Oh, I am just totally swaying back and forth at the mometn and am all over the place

FINGERS CROSSED

RIELOVESBACARDI · 25/05/2007 16:25

WITH MY LAST BABY I WENT THROUGH ALL OF THIS SHE WAS FINE,,, R YOUR DATES RIGHT COS I THINK THATS WHY MINE WAS SO HIGH IT MAKES A BIG DIFF

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 16:28

My last period was 1st Feb and I had worked my due date to be 8th Nov using a ph calculator.
The consultant used my last scan and worked it out to be 4th November so could be 4 days out. I think that they've gone off the scan dates as I was too early for the triple test if I went off my dates.

I asked the midwife yeaterday if this would make a difference and she said that as it was less than 5 days then no it wouldn't make a difference

Diege · 25/05/2007 16:48

Pixie, try not to worry. Out of 100 women who take the triple test, 20 have a 'high' risk (ie, 1 in 250 or 'higher')result. Of those 20 only 2 will have an 'affected' pregnancy (figures from ARC). I had triple test with dd1 and had risk of 1 in 169; didn't bother with dds2 and 3 because of the stress, and the fact that many in the medical establishment see it as 'bad science'. I'm actually doing research on antenatal screening, and one hospital I spoke to said they have dropped the cutoff point to 1 in 100 (ie. if you score 1 in 101 chance you are 'screen negative') - a lot less women recalled,a lot less anxiety, and no difference actuallt to the numbers of children born with chromosome 'abnormailities'.
One way to lessen the anxiety slightly might be to ask for a FISH (flurescent in situ hybridisation)analysis when having your amnio. You'll get the results back in 3 days .

RGPargy · 25/05/2007 16:50

Pixie - yes the measurements were from a very long and detailed scan where she measured EVERYTHING with the exception of the nasal bone as baby was too small to see.

Diege · 25/05/2007 16:53

Oh and to add that while the result can be 'thrown out' by incorrect dtaes, bleeding in early pregnancy, twins etc, that the vast majority are 'false positives' that can't be accounted for. The obstetricians I'm interviewing at the moment say it's just 'one of those things'that they can't account for, though they are starting to think that the high levels of HCG that are found in 'high risk' blood samples, are actually perfectly normal for some women. Hence the move towards 'better' (but more expensive) screening- ie nuchal..

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 17:36

Diege- I am still very ill although not as nauseous as the first 3 1/2 months and I always thought that sickness was related to high levels of Hcg-

I am just going round in circles with it all

RGPargy- I asked the midwife who came to give me the results whether a scan could tell us more and she said no apparently- unless this Trust don't want to commit to scan results

Coolmama · 25/05/2007 17:48

Hi Pixiefish - sorry to hear this is all so up and down for you - I had a triple test and the result was 1 in 46 ( or something equally scary) and when the dr called with the results he told me he had alreday made an amnio appt if I wanted to go that route I was lucky enough to see Dr Nikolaides who scanned me for 45 mins and then told me that basically I was a "mad old woman for having the test in the first place" (I was 35 at the time!) and if he could ban it, he would!!! - seems there are too many variables to get a true risk assessment. Needless to say, I did not have the amnio and my son, now nearly 2 1/2, is fine!

newkid · 25/05/2007 17:53

I had a 1 in 180 chance of abnormalities but dh and I were quite chilled about it because we had been TTC for several years and I didn't want to risk a miscarriage with an amnio. I was also told by my midwife to expect a high risk because I had had early pregnancy bleeding and I know my HCG figures were really high. I didn't really worry about the high risk in my pregnancy, though I did read articles about Down's with greater interest and they generally made me feel that having a Down's baby wouldn't be a 'lesser' option iykwim. DD is healthy in any event.

ellieandhattie · 25/05/2007 18:03

dd1 was 1 in 27000
dd2 was 1 in 31000

consultant was surprised and put lots of !!!! in my notes not sure why as was 24 and 27 when pg so not 'high risk' age
