Don't think I have enough newborn clothes?

All clothes of baby's are washed and in wardrobe and looking at it I have a lot more 0-3 than newborn 🤦🏻‍♀️ And starting to worry that's there's not enough.. so how long roughly are baby's in newborn clothes for ? As I really don't want to go buy more newborn sizes as I'm starting on 3-6 ( like to be prepared) baby weighs roughly 6lbs8ounces and due in 3 weeks

You will not know the weight until baby is born. You can buy another baaic trio of babygrows in each size. Only wash them if needed once baby is here, return or donate if not required.

Pascall · 21/06/2018 23:55

Don't buy too much. I got it wrong both times and had to send DH to Tesco for tiny babygrows when dd was born, and then for 0-3 when ds was born as he was very long.
If it's your first baby you may get bought or given lots of stuff too.

I don't have any newborn "outfits" as don't know the sex and won't be buying any until baby is here if at all....they pretty much live in babygrows for first couple of weeks do they not? I wouldn't worry!

LovingLola · 21/06/2018 23:58

Babies don't need outfits. You're grand with babygrows!

seizethecuttlefish · 21/06/2018 23:58

As the mother of a 6 week old, I can safely say that newborn clothes were a waste of money for me. DS was 7lbs 5 at birth and fitted nicely in newborn clothes for about a week or two. Buy a couple of things but unless you have a really small baby, they'll be out of them in no time. He's 11lbs now and 56cm, even 0-3mth are hit and miss.

INeedNewShoes · 22/06/2018 00:02

People will buy the cute 'outfits' as presents. I received more pretty little summery outfits in newborn and 0–3 than there were hot sunny days last summer. It was a struggle to make sure she wore them all!

I'd say a pack of 3 sleepsuits in each of ages 'newborn' 'up to 1m' and '0–3m' would be enough as a starting point, then once baby arrives you can go out and buy more of whatever size you're starting at.

They're all so different size wise. DD wore up to 1m size until she was 5 months! She has friends who were wearing 0–3 by the time they were 2 weeks old.

CanaBanana · 22/06/2018 00:03

I bought lots of outfits for my baby. It was a huge hassle. I gave up on outfits very quickly and he lived in babygros for months - easy to fasten, easy to change and wash if he pooed or puked, comfy for naps, and cheap to throw away if the poo wouldn't wash off. He had about a dozen babygros and 3-4 "posh" outfits that he only wore if he was going out.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 22/06/2018 00:03

Dd is 2 weeks old. She was 7 pounds 15 ounces and very long so we are managing with very few newborn clothes as some 0-3 month stuff already is a good fit. Her coming home from hospital newborn outfit for example is too short (dungarees).

Ds on the other hand was 6 pounds 9 ounces, also long and very skinny. 0-3 month was way too big until he was about 6 weeks old.

As long as you have a couple of things for them to wear when he/she arrives, I wouldn't worry. With ds, my MiL went out and bought us some smaller outfits whilst we were in the hospital.

CrazyOldBagLady · 22/06/2018 00:07

If you are desperate to get tiny arms and legs into uncomfortable outfits then checkout eBay for new/nearly new items that are being sold cheap by all the people who mistakenly thought they would need them!

Hannabee123 · 22/06/2018 00:35

Mine was 8.1 and in newborn for about 3 weeks. Some clothing fits can vary from different stores.
Stock some vests and babygrows in newborn and 0-3 months and go from there. I didn't really bother with outfits in all honesty until she was in 6-9. I'd keep a few because babies can be sick/ poop so it's good to have spares ready to change them.
I wouldn't worry so much about having hoardes of clothes. My baby is 6 months nearly and almost in 12 - 18 months. She's super tall and has been in various sizes for what feels like 5 minutes

MsJuniper · 22/06/2018 00:40

Babies are all curled up at the beginning and surprisingly hard to manipulate. Just vests and babygros (with front poppers) for the first few weeks, then maybe some soft cotton dungarees or rompers.

DS was in newborn and 0-3 for ages, DD grew out of newborn in less than a month.

Oh and just to confuse matters different shops use different parameters so some newborn stuff is up to 7.5lbs and some goes up to 9lbs. Mothercare and H&M also do 0-1 month stuff.

So in short get a bit of everything and see what fits, keep it simple - and add in some cute hats, preferably with ears.

GinIsIn · 22/06/2018 00:41

You really aren’t going to be using newborn size outfits Grin

Graphista · 22/06/2018 00:54

"Babies don't need outfits. You're grand with babygrows"

This!

Especially newborns. And I've looked after probably over 50 babies over the years as well as being a mum.

Babygrows are more comfy for them and easier for you to deal with in terms of umpteen nappy changes, laundries, spit up etc!

I never buy newborn clothes as a gift, nothing under 3 months size in clothes (though generally I stick to towels, muslins and bibs as you can NEVER have too many of them!)

I'm 5'2" and was a size 6-8 pre pregnancy, ex tall but very slim, dd though now very slim was a stonking 9lb 5oz!!! Predicted weight? 8.5lb at most 😂😂😂

A lot of her newborn stuff never even saw her!

Defo recommend light cotton rompers for in larger sizes for the hot weather coming up, and plenty of vests - cos honestly if it's very hot a vest is plenty.

Strokethefurrywall · 22/06/2018 01:02

In my case I had not enough newborn stuff and had to go out for more!
DS1 was 6lb 5oz and 46cm long and DS1 barely touched 6lbs and was in preemie clothes because everything else swamped him for ages!
They were in 3-6 months clothes by about 4months!
Slow burners my two but we just make em small in our family! I'm 5ft 8" and my sister is 5ft 10" and my niece was 5lb 13oz at birth.

MummySparkle · 22/06/2018 01:09

Mine were 7lb 9oz and 7lb 4oz, I think each of them was in newborn or up to 1m for about the first 4-6weeks, then in 0-3 until they were about 4.5months

Don't worry too much about outfits, sleepsuits and vests will be what you need for a tiny one. Outfits are a faff and your energy will be at a premium Wink DD was a summer baby, I found vests and soft footed trousers were really useful for her. If it got hot then she could just be in the best, but it was easy to slide the trousers on and off.

I think the closest we got to an outfit with either of them before 3months was vest, envelope neck tshirt and soft stretchy trousers.

JoanFrenulum · 22/06/2018 01:44

Don't worry about outfits. You'll be fine. Tiny baby doesn't need outfits.

kirta · 22/06/2018 02:39

My 8 week old has never worn an outfit. Just babygros. It's my personal preference, but I think they are more comfortable in them. Easy to wash, and you're not worried when a mustard poonami wrecks them!

Mousefunky · 22/06/2018 11:22

All of my DC were 10lbs+ so didn’t fit in newborn at all. It was a shock with my first and I’d wasted a lot of money on newborn clothes that just wouldn’t touch him. Didn’t make the mistake again and always stick to 0-3 months. You can always send someone out to buy newborn if needs be but I think they’re a waste of money. Agreed with PP’s on babygrows over outfits.

SiolGhoraidh · 22/06/2018 12:37

A colleague gave me two bags of newborn and 0-1 month babygros, so I haven't bothered buying any more. I've made a couple of personalized babygros (plain white with appliques on) for pictures and looking cute, but no 'outfits' as such. Another colleague has produced vast quantities of cardigans too, so he'll be nice and warm.

He'll be our first, and I expect by the time I'm confident in wrestling him into proper clothes he'll be in 3-6 months anyway!

SoyDora · 22/06/2018 12:42

I never bought an outfit in newborn size, or 0-3. Babies are much more comfortable in sleepsuits, especially at the beginning when they’re still scrunched up.
A couple of people bought outfits as gifts which they usually wore for an hour before they threw up on them, then back into sleepsuits. As long as you get a photo for the gift giver!

HelenSim33 · 22/06/2018 19:09

Get a few packs in each size then return what you don't need and buy more of what you're using. A friend gave me all the newborn and 0 to 3 month clothes they'd had for their son the year before so other than buying one new sleepsuit to be DS official coming home outfit I bought nothing. Then I went on to have a 6lb 2oz baby (despite my midwife suggesting they woukd be around 7.5 to 8lbs) who didn't even fit in newborn clothes for the first 4 weeks! So we ended up buying a couple of packs of tiny baby sleepsuits and vests to tide us over.

You just never really know what size you're going to need until they're here. So better to buy a few of each thing in different sizes.

BrutusMcDogface · 22/06/2018 19:16

I've just realised that the newborn stuff I've bought (sleepsuits/vests, not outfits!! I agree with everyone else on that; they're pointless, fiddly and uncomfortable!) isn't going to fit my baby as he's predicted to be huge. Mind you, babies come in all shapes and sizes and a heavy or light birthweight doesn't account for long legs/big feet/short and stocky! So I think it's a good idea to have a few of each size and buy what you need with baby is here. Good luck with it all! Smile

Verbena87 · 22/06/2018 19:20

Is it your first baby? If so, people bought us SO MUCH stuff (outfits and babygrows) that apart from the bits I’d bought for the hospital bag, I didn’t buy him any clothes til he was 6 months!! So don’t panic.

Size wise our scan estimates we’re off, and there’s no way he’d have fit in newborn things. I’d just get one pack each of vests abd babygrows in newborn and 0-3, then wait and see.

Good luck with it all!

badgirlswatchagonnado · 22/06/2018 19:23

In addition to vests and babygrows, I found baby gowns to be very easy and practical for nappy changes at night.

Aaah, I love tiny baby clothes!
