Breastfeeding chair. What would you suggest?

DP and I would like to put a chair in the nursery for me to breastfeed and for him to hold baby. I'm 19 weeks and would like to buy one soon as we are spreading out the cost of things over the next 20 or so weeks.

My question... what kind of chair would you recommend? We are on a budget so anything £100 or under (fancy or designer is not a necessity but also don't want an eye sore!)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks. N.

Literally any comfortable chair. I actually wouldn't buy in advance, but see which of the chairs/sofas you find most comfortable when the time comes. A few friends splashed out on bf chairs - gliding, etc. - and all ended up trying to re-sell within a couple of months.

You won't need this for a while anyway as the baby will be in your room for first six months, so like other poster said I'd hold off and see what you need after you have the baby.

We're going for the Ikea Poang - you can get it for £95 or cost increases for different covers etc. The pink one I want for DD's nursery is £145, typically Hmm

Only get an IKEA poång if you can get out of it whilst holding a 15lb weight and not using your arms. I literally got stuck in one in the early weeks post partum when my core was absolutely shot.

Nadiyah · 12/06/2018 18:03

Thanks all! Looks like we'll be best of waiting then however would be nice to buy everything before baby arrives so there'll be a little less strain re having to buy things with me being on a low wage and DP supporting us both financially!

I wouldn't bother, certainly not yet. I just used regular arm chairs or stayed in bed. The ikea one above was useless to me until my dc were older as it doesn't have big comfy arm rests. Also, you don't know how bf will turn out, some of my friends spent a fortune on pumps, pillows, bras and arm chair and ff in the end. Wait until you baby is born, see how you get on then look on e bay.

My daughter is 2 and we have the Ikea poang in her nursery still. It's great. No regrets and it's not ugly unlike quite a few nursing chairs. You can sort of rock it by tapping your leg to lul the baby to sleep. My mum friends have the same.

Nadiyah · 12/06/2018 18:36

Poang looks great! Shame the rocking chair version is so much mot expensive as it looks lovely (though I would worry about little fingers as baby gets older!). Is the basic one rockable-ish?

I found the Ikea poang arms got in the way when the baby got slightly bigger. Not comfy.
We picked up a bf rocking chair and stool from eBay for about 40 quid. The habebe glider rocking chair. I think you can get them on amazon for about 140 and they are super comfy. Also the recline is a godsend if you have to 'sleep' in their room

Casmama · 12/06/2018 18:45

I would highly recommend one of these as they are great in the early days to help support the baby so you can sit up straight and not kill your back.

Nadiyah · 12/06/2018 18:51

Thanks everyone!

para what do they look like in person? We've spent so much time making the nursery look nice that I don't want to put something in there that doesn't look nice. Of course I want something comfy but I'm not sold on these gliders!

I went to Ikea intending to get the rocker version but then sat on the normal one and really liked the way it gently bounced. I don't find the arms get in the way personally. I did buy the footstool which I regret. I don't find it comfy holding a baby with my feet up and also takes up floor space. Each to their own though.

KioraAdora · 12/06/2018 19:40

Spend the money on a single bed for when you have to feed them to sleep every 2 hours (My DC Hmm)

ANewHope18 · 12/06/2018 19:42

We bought this just because we liked it but figure it might come in handy once baby is here. It's comfortable and has four standard legs or rocker option.

Bluebirdsky · 12/06/2018 19:43

I got a rocking/breastfeeding chair and footstool second hand on a local selling site for £25 it's really comfortable and this way if we don't use it or get on with it post birth I haven't spent a fortune and can probably sell it on.

KioraAdora · 12/06/2018 19:43

And I know I sound even more misersable, but do you really want to be stuck in one room for hours at a time?

My DD literally cluster fed for several hours every couple of hours and she honestly fed every 2 hours through the night for 2 solid years.

24 long months of broken sleep.

I used the bed and sofa with a C shaped pillow.

butterybean · 12/06/2018 19:44

We have a cot and a single bed in the nursery and its the best combo ever. Bed has a lot more uses than a chair.

Nadiyah · 12/06/2018 19:45

I wish we had room for a bed! Sadly we don't.

Had no idea Aldi did furniture. Fab!

Thanks everyone Smile

I had a glider chair that reclined with a glider footstool, it was super comfy. So comfy I kept it for about 5 years Grin. Got it on eBay for about £80 iirc.

KMoKMo · 12/06/2018 19:47

I have fed both my babies in the rugby ball hold. Haven’t ever really got on with cradle hold so no chair would suit. A lot of women feed in the laid back position too and are more comfortable on the bed. I’d definitely wait and see what happens before buying.

I like your style Kiora! Grin

jpclarke · 12/06/2018 19:52

I would buy a good breastfeeding pillow and Jody and good supportive chair that you feel comfortable in and has 2 arms rests.

JessieMcJessie · 12/06/2018 19:57

There are glider chairs all over eBay for not very much money, 50 quid should get you a good one. You’re limited to local sellers you can collect from of course.
That said, I ended up putting the glider downstairs and getting a non rocking IKEA Strandmon for the nursery, found it v comfy for bf and is now coming into its own for toddler bedtime stories. New is not in your budget but you might get a used one.
