Clothes for July baby

Started packing hospital bag after a stay in hospital last week got me panicking. I have no idea what to pack for DD to wear!! DS was born in January so he wore a vest and sleepsuit in hospital with a cardigan and blanket for the journey home.

Will she need vests? Or just sleepsuits? Or footless romper things? Does she still need a hat?

I’m clearly clueless about dressing a summer baby Grin

My DS was born in hot weather and he still wore a vest and sleepsuit and in hospital, with a lightweight blanket when sleeping.

We ditched the hat after a few days, but he still wore both vest and sleepsuit for a good few months, as he hated his skin being exposed even in the hottest weather!

ooo forgot to say, mine is a july baby too :) due 9th xx

SamanthaH92 · 23/05/2018 09:07

I would take a hat. Sleep suits and a vests. Dd1 was a june baby and it was so hot on the wards and outside but i didn't take a hat and OH had to run and buy one because they said she needed to wear one. I'm due in July this time too and will be taking the same as last time so just sleepsuits, vests and hats xx

BumpInTheOven · 23/05/2018 09:32

I've always gone with the following roughly... all with cellular blanket to add & remove when needed:
Hot days (24+) vests and socks,
Warm days (19 -23) babygrow
Cooler (15-18) vest & babygrow
Cold (>15) vest, babygrow, cardigan

Good luck x

July baby here too and I don't have a clue.. more so with it being my first.

I'm taking sleep-suits with feet and mittens included, vests, a couple of cardigans and a couple of hats as well as a blanket they've had knitted for them. I think that should cover it?

MrsSiba · 23/05/2018 09:37

When they are first born midwife always asks for a hat for them but keep your best one for later once they're all cleaned up. Take two! I learnt that the hard way.

Bluebirdsky · 23/05/2018 09:39

July baby here too, I am taking some socks as well as vests and baby grows as if the baby is just in a vest sometimes their feet can be a bit cold in the initial days.

MrsSiba · 23/05/2018 09:42

Forgot to add July baby here too 😉

Icklepickle101 · 23/05/2018 09:45

More clothes than I thought then! I thought she’d be just in a vest Blush

Will pack similar clothes as I did for DS just a lighter cardi

Thanks everyone!

In the UK I reckon you'll still need sleepsuits in the summer unless it's a heatwave.

In a heatwave just a vest is probably fine. I'm also buying lots of little short sleeved rompers but we live in a warmer country.

Ohcomeonn · 23/05/2018 09:55

My dd was born in July, the days leading up to giving birth I was swanning around my house in a bikini top and shorts because it was so hot. Her first outfit in hospital was a vest, baby grow and hat and the midwife swaddled her with a blanket(!)

When we got home she either wore a baby grow or a vest, it was too hot for both imo. I don't think she ever wore a hat other than a sun hat.

Icklepickle101 · 23/05/2018 09:56

That sound sisnilar to my current clothing. Hoovering in just my knickers this morning

Also, I'm due my second in December so now I'm wondering what to buy as I don't have any newborn coats, snowsuit, warm hats, mittens etc Grin

MeadowHay · 23/05/2018 11:45

My baby is due in a few weeks and I'm a bit clueless about newborn dressing Confused. I have these little babygro things which I guess are 'vests' but have short sleeves and some have long sleeves...would baby wear that + and a sleepsuit over the top? Or just the vest thing with bottoms?? Sorry to derail the thread a bit, I asked my DM and she doesn't seem to remember but then none of us were summer babies. I don't know how much stuff to pack in my hospital bag or even what the appropriate clothes would be?!

MeadowHay · 23/05/2018 11:48

What's the difference between a vest and a babygro? I know a sleepsuit is the full on body suit with feet covered too. Everyone seems to use different words to describe the same items of clothing too, it's so confusing!

Spanglyprincess1 · 23/05/2018 11:59

My bbay is due in July too and I have no idea. I've packed a hat, three romper/sleepers and a couple of vests plus a blanket and a homeknitted cardigan thing.
I've also packed another set of the same but in a bigger size as my baby is possibly going to be very large so not sure what will fit him!

Icklepickle101 · 23/05/2018 12:05

Vests - like a top with poppers at the crotch, either short or long sleeves

Babygrow/sleepsuit - all in one with long sleeves and legs with feet covered

So will baby wear a vest with a sleepsuit over the top even in this warm weather?

Icklepickle101 · 23/05/2018 13:57

Apparently so. With my first the midwife told me baby needed one more lawyer than me in the early weeks

When DS was born (1st July) it was a heatwave (my gro egg said 28.5 in our living room). He was in vests or just a nappy for the first few weeks of his life!

This time I'm due to have DD on 2nd July and it's forecast another heatwave! I'm still packing everything that's on the MN hospital bag list. As she's a girl I've bought 2x cotton rompers as well as the vests, just to mix it up from vests a bit!

I think the general rule of thumb is one extra layer than we would wear?

CremeDeSudo · 23/05/2018 14:13

In the night he was usually in a vest (the ones with short sleeves and no legs!) and swaddled in a thin blanket! I wanted to get a large muslin for swaddling but could never find one! I might add that to my list for DD actually..

CremeDeSudo · 23/05/2018 14:14

Or just a babygro (sleepsuit). I wouldn't put them in a vest AND sleepsuit!

I guess it depends how warm the room they'll be sleeping in is?

lifechangesforever · 23/05/2018 14:18

Ive bought a thin cotton swaddle for when DD isn't big enough for the gro bag so sounds like that with a vest (now I know what one is!) will be suitable once we're home - will pick up a couple more.

I'll still take the sleep-suits, hats and cardigans for the hospital just in case the midwife insists on them!

Bluebirdsky · 23/05/2018 14:26

@CremeDeSudo I have got a couple of large muslins from Mothercare I think they came in a bedding set for a crib that was in the sale but you can probably buy them separately
