My DM is a tad excited about her first grandchild and is trying to be helpful by helping with stock piling nappies and wipes. Love her.

Anyway the latest stock count:
Size 1: around 200 nappies
Size 2: around 400 nappies
Size 3: around 200 nappies
Wipes: 120 packs 🙊🙈 a good variety of brands which I think will be helpful!

Anyway I have a feeling we are going to have far too many size 2 nappies- would this be a fair assumption? Are shops ok with you exchanging for the next size up (I’m not entirely sure she has kept the receipts as she’s been stocking up in her weekly shop)

Thoughts please!! I’ve suggested she holds fire until baby is here now.... this is my 3rd or 4th time of saying this so we will see what happens!

Oh bless her

I suppose you can aways sell them on!

My 18 month old uses 4/5 nappies a day. A smaller baby can use 6/7/8+

7 a day is 49 a week so maybe 8 weeks worth of size 2

Have a look at this OP.

I don't think you've got too many in size 2, but you might find your baby doesnt get in with a certain brand. I've found DD is fine in Aldi and Lidl, but Tesco rubs her inner thighs

Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 14:23

Ok that’s made me panic a little less! Being precious first grandchild it’s obviously had to be a brand leader for it’s precious little bottom (yes spoilt brat already! We had every intention of using Aldi but she’s gone with pampers!)

I was impressed with her forward thinking on the wipes front. She’s clearly searched far and wide as we have a variety of pampers, water wipes, huggies, dove, simple, aldi, Tesco, Sainsburys, boots... I’m sure the list goes on! 😂

It's very sweet of her, but as PP said, some brands won't suit some babies. Possible because of rashes, but also because some brands just don't suit the physical shape of your child and leak everywhere! Our nursery uses Tesco nappies on the children which I have found leak poop 9/10 times on DC1. Other people do not seem to have this problem and rave about them.

At home he is either in reusables or the Naty nappies and we have never had any sort of blowout.

Personally I also have found that I hate the smell of most nappies when they're wet as well. DC goes in a disposable at night as DH is in charge of night changes and I hate the smell in the morning, but it's better than Pampers.

Could you divert her stockpiling to other things? 120 packets of wipes is probably several years worth!

Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 14:27

@gummygoddess any suggestions on what else she may like to stockpile? I’m a Ftm so a little clueless! But she could have up to another 10 weeks of stockpiling if i end up going to 42 weeks 🙈

Trying to think of things I couldn't have too many of, the main thing that I'm coming up with is muslins. I think we have enough now and have maybe 100! Possibly also the kiddylicious wafers/veggie straws/coconut rolls that DC1 (and DH!) adores but are kind of expensive. They have long expiry dates though so could be helpful to stock up when they're on offer?

gryffen · 14/05/2018 14:30

Its a good amount but its down to if babies skin likes those nappies.

Aldi is fine with us but Huggies and Tesco were horrible.

Might be worth asking instead of getting nappies put money into a gift card for specific shop where you can get nappies the wee one handles.

moreismore · 14/05/2018 14:34

Definitely stockpile muslins! The massive metre squared ones are especially useful.

GinIsIn · 14/05/2018 14:34

Some brands simply won’t fit some children so it might be wise to stop her buying nappies ASAP!

You can never have too many vests. And something like a myhummy or sleepyhead as a one off purchase will be more useful than her stockpiling tat.

Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 14:37

Brill thanks for all of your help. I think we will just show her the stock take list and say thanks for all of the help but maybe hold fire for now! I’m sure once baby comes we will find that we have missed something essential when trying to prepare for baby.

DH is at work but will have a good giggle when he realises exactly how many packs of baby wipes we have! It was only due to the cupboard becoming more like a jenga tower (and boredom due to being signed off work) I decided to stock take!

GummyGoddess · 14/05/2018 14:38

I say the kiddylicious stuff is expensive as DC goes through at least one packet of wafers a day, plus some veggie straws and then DH gives him coconut rolls so he can share!

Can never have enough bibs either, though I use muslins in place of them when we run out. I think also more placemats, more socks and sockons, moisturiser for massage and in case you're planning on breastfeeding and baby gets milk spots. DC had such bad milk spots I got stopped in public several times!

GummyGoddess · 14/05/2018 14:40

Ah, also if you're planning on bottle feeding then you can never have enough of those little tiny bristle bottle brushes to clean the teats. They are small enough that they will go down the plug hole if you're not careful and then you won't want to clean the bottles with it.

antiestablishment · 14/05/2018 14:44

Baby toiletries! Shampoo, talc, moisturiser, baby bath, baby wash, lotion etc.
Dd is 11 months and I'm just about using up the last of what she got from before birth (and I've also given some away to friends having babies!)

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 14/05/2018 14:48

Oh bless her! I hope you are ok with pampers - I really didn't like them but most people seem to get on ok with them. It she wants to stock up on toiletries, Aveeno is the brand recommended by dermatologists. It's expensive and if you have kids with sensitive skin, it adds up quickly!

ijustwannadance · 14/05/2018 14:52

Tell her to stop. Having such a variety of wipes is a PITA in my opinion. You will find ones you/baby are ok with then feel obliged to use up the rest of them. We couldn't use anything scented.

Same with the nappies. For DD 1 pampers always leaked. Tesco own were great.

It also depends on weight of baby. DD 2 is 4 months. Big baby. Had 1 pack of new born for hospital then went straight to size 2. In Size 3 at 2 months.
Use on average 6 or 7 nappies a day.

Tumilnaughts · 14/05/2018 14:52

I've successfully exchanged wrong size nappies for next size. Didn't even know if they were from Tesco's originally but they didn't seem to mind... obviously this was with named brand (pampers) and not store brand. I would have known where they came from if store brand. Haha.

ijustwannadance · 14/05/2018 14:53

I've also never used a muslin cloth.

Pebblespony · 14/05/2018 14:55

You can never have enough wipes. Ever.

Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 15:00

@ijustwannadance they are all sensitive none scented ones so I’m not too concerned an if they aren’t suitable for bottoms I’m sure during the toddler sticky phase they will work perfectly well on sticky fingers etc!

@tumilnaughts that is good to know! I’d like to assume if they will exchange for the wrong size without receipt they may well let you switch the brand too if needed (DH may be sent on a few missions if this is needed 😂)

HopeAndJoy16 · 14/05/2018 15:04

If you don't use the nappies you could always donate them to a foodbank or charity which supports families in need!

It's so hard to know what you will need lots of. I bought boxes of wipes but we can only use cotton wool and water on dd bum as she reacts so badly to them. We are getting through them now she's weaning though. Also we had less than 10 muslins and got on fine with that amount, I've just passed them and a ton of bibs on to another ftm. I also got given loads of baby bath stuff and have again passed it on as we are just not using it and i want cupboard space back! I have however used loads of cotton wool and nappy creams like bephanthen.

BexleyRae · 14/05/2018 15:11

Oh yes,my local children's centre is always grateful for any nappies so if you have any open packs that you can't return they can always make use of them

Ratbagratty · 14/05/2018 15:12

Snufflebabe is great too, but would only need a few pots, the drops canbeused in a bowl near baby from birth, the rub from 3 months. I love it! Maybe you could ask for some nuts/ snacks for the nightfeeds energy boost!

Oysterbabe · 14/05/2018 15:20

We used to use pampers assuming they'd be the best. Borrowed a few Tesco own brand from a relative when we were caught short and they were so much better, no leaks overnight ever. Don't be tricked into believing a bigger price tag means better, where nappies are concerned it really doesn't.
I'd thank her profusely but ask that she doesn't buy any more in case they aren't the best fit for your baby.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 14/05/2018 15:56

Bepanthen or caldesene nappy rash protection is something worth sticking up on. It's recommended to use it at every nappy change. And another vote for muslins. I wouldn't get lots of shampoo/baby wash as you don't know how sensitive baby's skin will be or what they will tolerate. You will probably find one that works for you and stick with it.
