My DM is a tad excited about her first grandchild and is trying to be helpful by helping with stock piling nappies and wipes. Love her.

Anyway the latest stock count:
Size 1: around 200 nappies
Size 2: around 400 nappies
Size 3: around 200 nappies
Wipes: 120 packs 🙊🙈 a good variety of brands which I think will be helpful!

Anyway I have a feeling we are going to have far too many size 2 nappies- would this be a fair assumption? Are shops ok with you exchanging for the next size up (I’m not entirely sure she has kept the receipts as she’s been stocking up in her weekly shop)

Thoughts please!! I’ve suggested she holds fire until baby is here now.... this is my 3rd or 4th time of saying this so we will see what happens!

There is no need to put nappy cream on at every nappy change. Modern nappies soak everything up very well and the cream can make them less effective.

Shops are open 7 days a week. There really isn't any need to stock up on anything. Especially things you may or may not actually use. It's just a waste of time and money.

gruffalopuffalo · 14/05/2018 16:39

I'd ask her to stop for now. Maybe nearer the time she could stock up on ready meals or batch cook for you to fill your freezer (in case you have a baby like mine and don't have time to eat, let alone cook, for a couple of months)? Meals are such a good gift for new parents in my experience!

blacklister · 14/05/2018 16:41

I'd get her to stop. We only use one brand of wipes (water wipes) because of sensitive skin, and we only used Pampers up to size four until we changed to Aldi for size five and six. No others suited DD, it was the shape of them.

We also are still on our first tube of Metanium bum cream as DD has never had nappy rash just the occasional pink bun and she's two. I've got pots of unopened sudocrem and tubes of bepanthen. Completely unnecessary.

If she still wants to buy I'd direct her to cheap plastic backed bibs, muslins, vests and sleepsuits in various sizes. If you're planning on bottle feeding a variety (one or two of each NOT loads) can be useful so you can find the one that suits baby best.

Baby wipes are going out of fashion - you cannot flush them as they block up the sewers and lots of people are now using washable wipes and finding they are very efficient at cleaning compared to single-use wipes which are bits of polyester and just push the poo around.

One thing I never thought I’d need a lot of is post partum pads for myself. I was sending DH out ever other day to get a pack it seemed... if you don’t feel weird asking maybe she could pick you up a few packs of those?

blacklister · 14/05/2018 18:29

Oh yes, @Tumilnaughts is right! Stuff for you post birth will be a godsend, and as it's your mum buying it's not embarrassing!

I'd recommend

  • Lots and lots of maternity pads
  • Breast pads
  • Lanisoh nipple cream if planning to BF
  • Antibacterial soap (I had Cidal, and continue to use it on my face, funnily enough) to wash your bits with, especially if you're stitched
Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 18:53

Amazing! Thanks for all the tips! I’ve made my mum sound like a crazed woman bent on buying baby things 😂😂 we’ve had a good chat today (as she arrived with more size 3 nappies 😂😂😂) and she is going to hold fire for now. I’ve picked up a few bits for myself post birth and she only lives a few miles away so will be popping around frequently when baby is born so if I need anything for me at that point I will ask then 😊.

Get her to buy you Lansinoh breast pads - they're the best, and you'll need loads!

Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 20:17

As everyone is keen on the maternity pads, can anyone quantify how many may be needed? I’ve picked up a few packs... and know it will vary, but what’s a good starting number? (In your experience)

A good idea to put the nappy-buying on hold for a while - you could be the only house in your area with nappies as loft insulation otherwise.

Thetimehascometo · 14/05/2018 20:22

@Knittedfairies it’s a real shame we insulated the loft last year when we renovated 😂

Depends on how long you bleed as it can vary. I bled for about 6-7 weeks and was using about a pack every 2 days. I changed them frequently as I found wearing them chafed. I also really liked these like paper underwear things for the first few days.

GummyGoddess · 14/05/2018 20:49

Maternity pads - 80 I used last time before being able to move onto normal pads for the remainder of the bleeding. I know it was 80 as I bought 4 boxes of 10 thinking 40 would be fine and it was not.

I also had the disposable mesh knickers for the first few days and sat/slept on bed mats so I didn't destroy the furniture.

Ariela · 14/05/2018 23:48

Tumilnaughts, I used prefold cotton nappies just folded into a pad inside my knickers SO comfortable and absolutely no chaffing, cheap as chips and just popped them in the wash, worked absolutely brilliantly

Thetimehascometo · 15/07/2018 01:38

Looking through my posts and this made me chuckle- our baby was born at 34 weeks, 6 weeks on we haven't even touched the size 1s! Plenty to keep us going then!

Congratulations! My baby wore size zeros for the first ten weeks also. I hope you are all enjoying your new arrival.
