Vain I know - anyone recommend a mini make up kit for my hospital bag?

I want to put a little something in there so I can freshen up ready for photos! But I don't want to stick my current make up in there as I'm going to need it in the next few weeks. I just want to have my bag packed and ready so wondering if anyone can recommend a little kit of mascara, lipgloss, blusher that's not too expensive that I can stick in my bag?

lulu - you should so do the post natal make up thing - better than the annoying bounty lady (no i farking don't want a non-recyclable bag full of crap an hour after pushing DS out thank you) -
Bumper - wish i had slapped some make up on but forgot my sodding lippy ... good luck!!!

Gingermonkey · 13/05/2007 17:49

yep, I'm all for a haircut before too.

Taylormama · 13/05/2007 17:49

ooh yes - haircut and get a pedicure - my hot pink toes cheered me up no end

SoupDragon · 14/05/2007 12:00

Beware of the haircut - don't get anything drastically different done as you currently have a Pregnant Face which may be fatter than normal... what suits it may not suit your non-pregnant face.

I would suggest a blusher (or bronzer), tinted lip gloss/balm and some concealer. Also make sure you take a small mirror so you can apply when you need as may not feel like/be able to get out of bed.

I do appreciate that some ladies may think what a waste of time or say you'll have no time - personally I think that if looking nice will cheer you up/make you feel better - then why not ? Also it only takes a couple of minutes.

Also, I would say (I may have been lucky) but for the first couple of days my DS slept a huge amount of time so a quick application of lipgloss was more than possible. And I had a 3rd degree tear and ended up in surgery so it wasn't a two pushes and he was out type birth !

Like Ginger monkey I had the full mani/pedi/facial/wax/eyebrown tint/shape/haircut before DS1 and never regreted it as made me feel a lot better. In fact I am 39 weeks with no 2 so have booked my treatments this week.

Bobbi brown has some lovely kits but very expensive so perhaps go to boots and buy the essentials. Good luck and don't feel vain. Do whatever makes you feel good. x

I could offer thousands of make up suggestions, I'm addicted to the stuff!!! Its my first too bumper and I'm clinging to the hope I won't go native too much!! I even managed to put make up on during a round the world yacht race so something like a baby isn't going to stop me!!! hehehe

LilRedWG · 14/05/2007 12:35

Haven't read all the replies, but relistically I'd say go for a tinted moisturiser and lip balm/gloss.

hiya bumper

well being a girl who's concerned about getting her straighteners into her labour bag (re my AIBU thread), I defo defo would pack the following:

Lansinoh nipple cream - best lip balm in the world.
blusher - to recreate that blooming look
concealer - for the inevitable dark circles under eyes

and beforehand, make the time to get your eyebrows waxed & tinted, and eyelashes tinted. seems frivolous perhaps but you will look so much better with no effort at all hours of the day!

I'd also recommend getting hair fully done 2 weeks before due date and pedicure.

Go on, you're worth it

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 13:19

What about a wee bit of perfume too, or is that going totally bonkers. I'm a sucker for JoMalone Verbena de Provence, really zingy and lemony smelling. Wakes me up and perks me up no end.

notsolilKel · 14/05/2007 13:23

oooh yes a good perfume is so nice -

however, I was just too scared to wear any (or use any scented stuff) after DS, as I thought it might put him off breastfeeding or give him an allergic reaction or he wouldn't recognise me when I didn't wear it... paranoia perhaps

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 13:34

oooh hadn't thought of that! It's funny because I associate some smells sooo much with my mum (Rive Gauche takes me right back to my childhood!!) but of course a newborn might get confused!

Cakehead · 14/05/2007 13:45

This is a very important thread and I love it. I had an emergency make-up bag and was SO glad I did so. DD born at 7.30pm, woke once in the night briefly for a nappy change and feed and then was still sleeping at 9.00 the next morning. Meanwhile, I was completely over-excited and desperate for her to wake up. But it did give me time for shower, fixing my hair, doing my make-up. Yes, it can be done! I love Clarins Beauty Flash balm - makes you all glowy. And in my experience, huffing and puffing at a posh beauty counter looking for samples often ends in a right result. Lots of assistants sneaked me sample-sized things when I enquired. Think they feel sorry for you and your bulk. In fact, must try again as am 34 weeks gone myself...

bellabelly · 14/05/2007 13:55

I read somewhere recently that the hospital makes you take off all make-up, nail polish and jewellery. Is that just wrong? Or maybe just applies for c-sections?

incy · 14/05/2007 15:42

Bellabelly removal of make up/nail varnish is only for C sections or if you end up in surgery (eg 3rd degree tear)- I have mentioned this before but when I had my 3rd degree tear I got in a right mood because they nearly ruined my lovely pedicure (nice to see my priorities were right !)In the end I negotiated for the removal of just my hand polish and as my make up was quite light I wasn't asked to remove this either.
You can wear your wedding ring but they tape it up.

For a V birth then pretty much anything goes so don't worry.

Even more need for a make up bag post surgery !

lemonaid · 14/05/2007 15:51

bellababy only applies for surgery and IIRC they werent' fussed about makeup or jewellery for my c/s (but then I'd been in labour for so long and had a bath that it would be unlikely I'd have any makeup on even if I'd had any to start with almost certain no one taped over my wedding ring, though). The "issue" is that if you end up needing surgery (for emergency c/s or for tear) then they will probably take it off in a very businesslike manner with neat acetone and little or no regard for aesthetics. An obstetric registrar in my NCT group suggested wearing just clear nail varnish as they probably wouldn't bother to take it off and even if they did they wouldn't make too much mess.

lemonaid · 14/05/2007 15:52

P.S. I didn't wear makeup, but did retouch all the photos later in Photoshop...

bumperlicious · 14/05/2007 16:35

Ok, decided that buying a little kit (was so tempted by benefit realness of concealness) is just far to frivolous esp when I have lots of lovely stuff already, so I just need to keep it all in a bag and remember to bring it when I go.

To make up for this though, I bought myself a home eyelash tinting kit and am going to give that a go.

For anyone else who is interested though almost bought this as it had a bit of everything in it - fab, just can't justify it myself!

Bumper...I usually buy boots No 7 and every so often they do little giveaway bags which usually have little trial sizes of moituriser, lippy, mascara and eyeshadow in, all you have to do is spend £15 or more on No.7 products.....easy to do if you're me.....
....maybe we can pop into Boots on Friday!!

Jbck · 14/05/2007 17:30

I'm going to sell my 7ml samples of Boots Protect & Perfect serum on Ebay to fund a Benefit one. I had no make up on in my post DD photos, no bra either I look a right sight & will not let anyone see them unless under pain of torture. This time round I'm getting my eyelashes/brows done beforehand & will refuse pics till I'm decent . My nailvarnish was unceremoniously whipped off & I'd spent ages the day before (induced) doing my fingers & toes (was so proud of my toes) & was mad at the way they did it. DH asked if he could bring anything in that evening & all I wanted was nail varnish!

bellabelly · 14/05/2007 18:17

Ooooh Bumper - that's LOVELY - £22 but I might have to indulge!

notsolilKel · 14/05/2007 19:20

bumper - a home eyelash tinting kit? get out!! where do I get one? let us know how it works! would be so fab if I never had to mess with mascara (and more importantly, the removal of it!) ever again!

Jbck · 14/05/2007 20:31

The home kits are quite fiddly to use on your own, you really are best getting a friend to do it (DH can be trained in an emergency). I've never gotten quite as good results diy as getting them done at a salon. Boots & most other chemists do them, around £6 but I noticed today Superdrug charge you a £1 extra for black as opposed to brown. You have to do them every 4 weeks or so, it's great if you swim a lot or are always rushing out the door putting your mascara on in the rear-view mirror.
