How many a day when pregnant?
I have tried decaf and I don't like it. I've had 2 cups today but I'm dying for another.

A cup of tea is 75mg of caffeine, so it’s 2 max I’m afraid :(

I drink clipper tea and have moved onto their decaf. It’s nicer than others as it still tastes like their regular tea xx

sweetiehuni · 18/04/2018 12:28

I'll have to try some of that. Thank you. It's sooooo hard 😂

Tell me about it 😂 I usually consider 6 cups a day a small amount 😂

I’m having 2 regular and the rest decaf to see me through xx

Hairgician · 18/04/2018 12:41

We use Thompson's decaf tea and it's fine! Switched to that with ds1 and never changed back!

Bluebirdsky · 18/04/2018 12:44

Just be careful that if you have any chocolate or fizzy drinks as well as the tea then you might go over that:

I didn't know tea was limited! I drank loads when I was pregnant

cautiousoptimist1 · 18/04/2018 13:59

Yorkshire tea decaf tastes like proper tea!

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 18/04/2018 14:03

There is more like 40-50mg in a cup of tea so unless you are drinking more than 5 cups (which would have you weeing constantly!) I’m not sure you need to panic!

HalfStar · 18/04/2018 14:05

OP i usually drank three cups of tea a day in all of my three pregnancies.

Sometimes a good trick is to just use smaller cups.Wink

Fridasfridgefreezer · 18/04/2018 14:05

I’m pregnant and I drink as much tea as I did before.

Eeeeek2 · 18/04/2018 14:10

Co-op decaf is pretty decent.

Kirta · 18/04/2018 14:16

Yorkshire decaf, I never knew the difference!
I must admit that when I fancied it after 12 weeks, I didn't really limit myself.

pastabest · 18/04/2018 14:17

The science behind the recommendations around caffeine consumption in pregnancy doesn't (IMO) warrant pregnant women cutting out or severely restricting caffeine completely.

There is a good summary here:

scienceofmom.com/2014/07/21/caffeine-safety-in-pregnancy/

I don't drink a huge amount of coffee/ tea anyway but if I fancy 4 cups one day with a chocolate biscuit on the side i'm not too worried, although probably wouldn't make a habit of it (for starters I would never sleep).

Ebeneser · 18/04/2018 14:18

I’m drinking Tetley decaff tea and it tastes just fine

sweetiehuni · 18/04/2018 14:52

I'm going to get a few brands of decaf and see what I like. Thanks for all the suggestions it's really helpful as I'm addicted to tea 😂

Another vote for Yorkshire Decaf - make sure you leave the bag in for a reasonable amount of time and you an barely tell. I used to drink about 10 cups a day what a shocker!

TinyTerror1 · 18/04/2018 14:56

I drink Clipper decaf or Twinings Earl Grey decaf (this is my fave but only good if you like decaf, obviously!). I find all the others I've tried have a weird flavour to them. Hope you find one you like.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 18/04/2018 14:58

tell you what is nice - red bush tea - no caffeine at all, slightly different flavour.

Hypermice · 18/04/2018 15:00

It’s fine. Avoid the shit like caffeinated energy drinks (they’re bad in many ways) but if you fancy an average British cuppa just have one. Or five. There’s only about 40mg in a cup of tea and even very conservative estimates put the recommended limit at 200mg.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some new work that raises that limit further as well.

Drinking it to the point your heart pounds is a bad idea but the average level of British tea addiction is alright.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 18/04/2018 15:36

I think the reason that people are giving such varying caffeine levels for tea is the difference between a 'cup' and a 'mug'. According to this (www.theguardian.com/news/2013/nov/27/caffeine-compared-coke-coffee-aspirin-chocolate-tea) there's 20mg of caffeine in an average 100ml of tea - and 200ml (to get 40mg in a cup) is a teeny amount - a small tea cup (which no one I know drinks out of unless they're having multiple cups from one teapot). If you drink out of mugs, like most people, then the NHS estimate of 75mg seems closer, so while I really wouldn't panic about going a bit over one day (well, I would, but I'm not a model of calm in pregnancy than anyone should emulate!), you probably shouldn't be having five of them day in day out.

I found the key to getting used to decaf tea is to never let yourself have normal, by the way - the comparison brings home how shit decaf tea is, but if you only ever drink it then after a few days it tastes normal to you.

happymummy12345 · 18/04/2018 15:42

I drunk loads of tea when I was pregnant. I have mine quite weak. Does that make a difference or not?

Stellarbella · 18/04/2018 15:43

Marks & Spencer do a great decaf. I honestly can’t tell the difference and was addicted to tea pre-pregnancy

EeekPreggoAgain · 18/04/2018 15:46

My tip is make a rule for yourself. Mine is that the first one of the day and one at lunch can be the two regular cups then the rest have to be decaf. I couldn’t get up and through the day without any regular tea! But then I don’t drink coffee, coke or really eat chocolate so it’s my only real source.

Vitalogy · 18/04/2018 15:47

My mum drank lots of tea when she was pregnant with me, this was back in the 70's, the side effect is that I hate tea Smile

Liz3891 · 18/04/2018 16:58

Why would the size of the mug make a difference with tea? The caffeine comes from a single tea bag regardless. If anything, the more water added, the more dilute each sip of tea is.
