Is it too soon to buy a pram?

Is it too early to buy a stroller/carrycot/car seat. I'm 7+3 and my mum is purchasing it for us. We have fallen in love with one and it's on Groupon for £100 cheaper than anywhere else. Shall I go for it? I'm not superstitious😛

My personal view is yes way too early. I'm 16 weeks and not even going to think about buying anything until at least after the 20 week scan. I hope things all go well for you but if not it will be horrible to have the pram around. Also you might change your mind or find another amazing deal over the next few months! :)

Casmama · 17/04/2018 20:21

In my view yes. I didn’t buy anything till after 28 weeks.
Fingers crossed all goes well but it is so early that I think it is unwise.

Mississippilessly · 17/04/2018 20:22

Yes. Way way too early. Sorry.

happymummy12345 · 17/04/2018 20:23

I'm very superstitious and therefore we didn't get anything until the month before my due date. And even then we had nothing in our house except what we needed to take to hospital. The crib and pram were brought over once dc was born. And we didn't set anything up until dc was home.

Far too early. Even if things go well it's going to be in your way for the next 7 months.

It could be twins, and therefore a single pram will be useless.

If things don't go well if could be an upsetting reminder for you.

Your views about what is important in a pram may change the bigger and more uncomfortable you get and the more you think about it.

CluelessMamaToBe · 17/04/2018 20:28

I'd wait a little bit longer. It's really easy to want to buy things but as a pp said, if something did go wrong you'd be really sad having a leak sat in the house. I would wait until at least 14 weeks, if not longer.

We are waiting until after the 20 week scan before we start buying things and decorating the nursery. We are still budgeting for everything and putting money aside each month for bits and bobs!

Congrats for your pregnancy Thanks

CluelessMamaToBe · 17/04/2018 20:29

A leak? That's meant to say pram Confused

Chrisinthemorning · 17/04/2018 20:34

Yes. After the 20 week scan- the. You can enjoy the shopping.
I had to tfmr at 14 weeks and it would have killed me to have bought anything. I couldn’t even walk into our undecorated spare room (intended for a nursery) without melting down.

TheBabyFacedAssassin · 17/04/2018 20:36

I would wait until after the 20 week scan. In my first pregnancy I ordered my pram when I was 18 weeks and had to cancel the order after the 20 week scan after receiving bad news. It’s not a nice thing to have to do.

LatIt · 17/04/2018 20:38

I lost two babies at 24 weeks.

Having loads of stuff in the house didn't hurt me any more at all.

My lovely DC now uses it all, the stuff I loved and picked myself for a good few years Smile

I say buy it, OP. But maybe keep the receipt? Could well be twins Grin

NoNoCharlieRascal · 17/04/2018 20:40

I got the big items at about 14 weeks with my first as it was January sales. I just made sure they could be returned if needed.

BertieBotts · 17/04/2018 20:41

Could you sell it on if you change your mind, find it's twins or the worst happens?

Groupon coupons do often come around again, and if you're 7 weeks now, you must be due in December meaning you will have both summer sales and Black Friday sales to come.

PasstheStarmix · 17/04/2018 20:42

I waited until after the 12-13 week scan before purchasing any items.

dinosaurkisses · 17/04/2018 20:47

I wouldn’t rush to buy anything because of a sale or Groupon- in my experience with baby retailers, they have massive sales with very good discounts at least twice a year- Mothercare seem to have them at least every three months! You can guarantee “your” pram will be on offer again in the 34 weeks you have left, or you might even see something you like better!

I was going to order my pram just after my 20 week scan- the sales assistant was very upfront and told me they often had promotions on my preferred make and model (Silvercross Wayfarer) where they’d include a free car seat and presuaded me to wait until the offer came up again- sure enough she was right and I ordered it at 28 weeks and saved myself the cost of the car seat.

BertieBotts · 17/04/2018 20:48

I've also just looked at the Groupon offers currently and I wouldn't recommend any of those prams - they are overpriced for what they are. The car seats are also really not great in terms of safety. I bet we can find you something better value if you say which features you're looking for? :) Prams are such a big ticket item, it's worth researching them early and then looking out for deals as you'll quite often find they get discounted. Mothercare has regular pram events and so does Kiddicare and some of the other online retailers as well.

TinyPawz · 17/04/2018 20:54

I'm 8+4 and have my pram. It's in the loft away. If anything goes wrong it will be sold on. Too good of deal to pass up

leighdinglady · 17/04/2018 21:02

My mum bought me a pram when I was 10 weeks pregnant. I found out at the 12 weeks scan that the baby was deadly ill. It DID upset me to look at that pram, empty, in my house.

That said, I now have a baby daughter who loves it.

I'd wait until the 12 week scan at leat

Flisspaps · 17/04/2018 21:08

If you want it, buy it.

I'm not one for superstition.

kimlo · 17/04/2018 21:09

it'll nearly be out of gaurentee by the time you use it.

Mississippilessly · 17/04/2018 21:12

I don't believe in tempting fate or anything at all. I just think that unfortunately at this point you have no idea if your baby is viable - or even if its maybe twins or triplets! I don't think it is about 'jinxing' it, it's just about making purchases that would have the potential to cause a lot of extra unnecessary upset

mrsflurph · 17/04/2018 21:13

Sorry but I think it is a bit early too

gryffen · 17/04/2018 21:16

Quite honestly yes - falling in love with prams etc is a hazard we all have gone through but you ideally need to research your pram/carseat/travelsystem in length and then when you Do decide it can take 10 weeks to come in depening on what you want.

(We ordered a silver cross pram in 2014 at 6 months pregnant and it arrived 5 days before I was induced 3 months later.

Is the pram you want washable/can baby sleep in it safely/does it come with other items?

2018isanewyear · 17/04/2018 21:20

I'm not one for superstition either but after having a miscarriage at 10 weeks I was so glad I hadn't purchased anything especially something as
Large as a pram. It was heartbreaking to see webpages I had saved ready for when we knew all was well and I just don't think I would have coped at all if I had already got the items.

Next time I will be waiting even longer but totally understand how exciting it all is

Flyingchimps · 17/04/2018 22:32

We purchased ours on the day we had our anomaly scan 😊 we had to have a second so it wasn’t actually until 23 weeks. There are always offers on though so I wouldn’t worry too much about missing out later. We got a free car seat with ours!

Also remember it’s quite a chunky bit of kit and even in a box takes up a fair amount of space somewhere. Ours is currently taking over my old bedroom at Mum and Dads 😂
