Is it too soon to buy a pram?

Is it too early to buy a stroller/carrycot/car seat. I'm 7+3 and my mum is purchasing it for us. We have fallen in love with one and it's on Groupon for £100 cheaper than anywhere else. Shall I go for it? I'm not superstitious😛

Surely it's not about superstition but about 1. the statistical likelihood of something still going wrong at 7 weeks pregnant and 2. the inconvenience of having such a large item around your house for the remaining 33+ weeks? Prams (and everything else) will be available for sale on every day, up to, including and following the day you give birth! 7 weeks in is ridiculous.

Yes way too early. I would leave it until you're 20 weeks +

There's deals all the time so I would never buy one so early. I would find it heartbreaking having to deal with returning/selling on baby stuff if the news was bad.

Definitely too early! DH and I had to TMFR a much wanted and much loved baby last month at 19 weeks. We’d planned to go nursery furniture shopping at the weekend, before we found out how ill our baby was. I’m so, so glad we didn’t.
Imagine something happening and having to deal with removing a huge item like a pram in your home.

I agree with a pp that’s its really not about superstition and more the reality that it’s best to wait until you know it’s a viable pregnancy.

Agree with all the other posters. I had 3 early mcs - sadly it's very common.

Even if (hopefully) all is well, you don't want the pram to be wasting its warranty sitting in its box. If it breaks 5 minutes after you start using it in 8 months' time you won't be able to return it.

Plus you might change your mind about the pram you want. I did multiple times. It's one of the biggest purchases so no need to rush into it. There are deals and sales all the time.

The best thing you can do now is to start researching all the things you want and where to get them, then start buying them later on (eg after 20'weeks). I know it's so exciting but pregnancy is really long (especially for me - I'm nearly 42 weeks!!!) and it's much better to delay some of the excitement/planning.

I don't believe in superstition so I wouldn't not Buy it because of that I wouldn't buy it because I'd be sick of falling over it for the next seven months you might change your mind in terms of what you want or what if you find out you're having twins and need a double.

GreenMeerkat · 18/04/2018 08:56

What @Figgygal said!

I'm not superstitious at all but your house will soon be jam packed with baby things. Enjoy these last few months where it's not! If your mum wants to buy it then let her keep it at her house. Then if the worst happens (fingers crossed it won't!), you won't have to see it.

Agree with others- you need to think about what you want and do plenty of research. You'll be pregnant for most of the next year so there's plenty of opportunity for other deals and potentially even better reductions. That's aside from the fact it's still v early days. If you're confident that's the one you want and you have the space to store it (like in the loft or similar) then go for it, but a lot can change- your car/boot space, where you're living, number of babies....Grin

Some people I know have bought through independent nursery stores that have a layaway service where you pay the pram off. That way you could add to it if you go for something outside your mum's budget or you want to contribute yourself. An aquaintance did this after her twelve week scan and asked the sales assistant if she was unusually early and was told no, there's women that come in after a positive test! But not to worry, if something did happen there was a no quibble refund policy. That's probably what I'll do.

Far too early IMO. I’d wait until after your anomaly scan before you buy anything at all.

Aside from worst case, there are also less serious things that can flag up at the scan that could affect your purchase decisions. My friend spent a fortune on lots of expensive designer sleep suits early on, only to find out her DS had talipes and the treatment he had to correct his feet after birth meant sleep suits were a no no. Her DS was fine but she’d wasted a lot of money!
