Burst of fetal movement, followed by very slow movement - 37weeks

Hi Ladies

Last night around 6pm my little girl started moving frantically. It lasted for about 10/15 minutes. I have never felt her move like that.

Since then (last 18 hours or so), she has moved - but the movements have been very subtle /soft.

Has anyone else experienced this - should I be worried?

Thanks so much

I would go and get checked out. Call Labour Ward now and say you have reduced movements. ANY reduced movements should be checked out. You are now at term. There is no point wasting time, just call them.

KoshaMangsho · 12/04/2018 12:17

Reduced movements also includes any change in the KIND of movement not just frequency. And the myth that babies move less close to term is very dangerous. Sorry I don’t mean to panic you but you have nothing to lose by going in and being monitored.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 12/04/2018 12:17

Absolutely go get it checked - now, stop whatever you’re doing and go.

Sorry to sound so alarmist but it could indicate foetal distress.

Isadora2007 · 12/04/2018 12:19

Please do go and get checked. I hope all is okay.

8SaltandVinegar · 12/04/2018 12:19

Hope everything will be okay. Most definitely get checked.

mayhew · 12/04/2018 12:20

As a midwife I would say, if you think it's out of your usual movement, have a check up. The most likely outcome is reassurance but you have to be physically seen.

RandomMess · 12/04/2018 12:28

I hope you are on your way to get checked out already!

Lndnmummy · 12/04/2018 12:29

My midwife told me that we should not only check reduced movements but a sudden increase in movement as well. Please go and check, don’t wait.

Sammiikinns · 12/04/2018 12:32

Thanks, all of you. I'm just trying to get through now - I'm a few hours away from my midwife.

She has the hiccups now - good sign you think?

What a worry!!

Please please please - this very second, call to get seen at the hospital right now. Or just turn up. You need to be looked at right away.

One of my twins stopped moving at 35 weeks. I didn’t know and only found out by chance. A few more hours and he wouldn’t be here. Increased movement needs to be investigated ASAP too.

Please don’t wait.

TammySwansonTwo · 12/04/2018 12:39

Do you mean you have a midwife appointment in a few hours? Don’t wait for that. I did - I felt weird overnight but waited until my midwife came the next lunchtime. She booked me in to get seen a few hours later. Once they’d established what was going on I had an emcs right away.

My hospital has a labour line - if you have something like that, keep calling non stop until you get through. If you can’t get through, turn up.

I’m not trying to scare you here, it’s just so important that you get seen x

CoperCabana · 12/04/2018 12:41

At my hospital you could just turn up at the Assessment Unit. Do you definitely need to phone first? Please go get seen the fastest route for your area.

FridayNightFun · 12/04/2018 12:46

My first became very sluggish at 32 weeks. I was overseas with private medical care. I went to the hospital and after about 5 minutes on the CTG with his heart rate at 240bpm they were wheeling me into theatre for a EMCS.

I hope you're ok.

mayhew · 12/04/2018 12:51

A midwife cannot assess cause for concern over the phone. If you've felt it unusual enough to post on here, you need to be examined in person. This usually involves a ctg at the hospital. Hiccups don't mean anything good or bad either way.

KoshaMangsho · 12/04/2018 12:52

Yea go now. When I was in NICU (with my prem son who is fine now) almost all the full term babies we saw if they didn’t have pre-delivery complications (like stuff that was seen on scans) were almost delivered because there was significant foetal distress and in at least two cases it was the mum who called it in because of the movement and saved their baby’s life even if they needed to go to the NICU. I don’t want to be alarmist about it but go go go.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 12/04/2018 13:20

Just GO! Forget about calling.

TammySwansonTwo · 12/04/2018 13:30

I know what it’s like. I didn’t want to “be a bother” and it felt like an overreaction. I promise you, there’s not a single member of staff who would you think you’re wasting their time. There honestly isn’t time to waste here - sure, maybe it’s all fine, but if it is a sign of a problem then it needs to be dealt with right now.

McTufty · 12/04/2018 13:35

The hiccups are good as it shows your baby is alive (so in the unlikely event there is a problem, it isn’t too late) but it doesn’t mean that he or she isn’t in distress and if this is the case then you need to find out urgently. The most likely outcome by far is reassurance but occasionally a baby’s life is saved by the mother getting to the hospital in time. Please don’t delay.

If you mean you are hours from home then go to a hospital near where you are.

Good luck Flowers

Rachie1986 · 12/04/2018 14:42

Hope you are ok OP, please get checked x

TammySwansonTwo · 12/04/2018 18:58

Been worrying about you all day OP, hope you’re okay x

8SaltandVinegar · 12/04/2018 22:55

Been worrying too. Hope you and baba are okay OP.

MagnaWiles · 12/04/2018 23:03

Hope you have gone to get checked. At the maternity assessment unit, not by a midwife (they can't do scans, so it would be useless).

Just to say, it is possible to have this happen and for everything to be fine. It happened to me and I thought it was weird and then movements restarted as normal a day later and baby was born healthy at term. However I did have a real shock when I spoke to a colleague who told me about having a very similar thing happen and then being told that her baby had died. So please do get checked. Might be something, might be nothing, either way it is so much better to know and be in good hands!

Rachie1986 · 13/04/2018 08:17

How are you OP?

Sammiikinns · 13/04/2018 08:23

I just want to say thanks to all of you.

I went to assessment centre yesterday after reading your comments. I’m not sure I would have if you didn’t shock me into it.

So glad I did, I had a CTG which was perfect - showing no distress and I’m having a scan today. Movements are still very soft compared to how they were before, but there are a few reasons why that might be the case.

Advice to any ladies reading this who’s experienced a similar thing - just go get it checked. Yesterday I was three hours away from the hospital, had to leave work early and call in favours for rides. All worth it for the peace of mind.

Thanks again
