Daughter pregnant and not eating properly

Hi all

After some advice so I can stop being a nagging/caring parent!

My daughter is 16 weeks pregnant and while I was at hers yesterday was shocked to find she has very little in the fridge.

She is eating but shes just picking. Mainly soup, pasta and sauces and packets of crisps. There isn't a bit of fruit or veg in sight. She has takeaway on a weekend. I don't want to come over as the nagging mother but really concerned she just isn't eating healthily enough for her and her baby.

She did say she just hadn't been shopping yet. So I'm going to make some shepherds pies and stuff she can heat from the freezer.

Am I being paranoid?!

I had hyperemesis, carbs settled my stomach more than other foods, so my pregnancy diet was not great. My mum liked to tell me (on more than one occasion) how she ate loads of raw carrots when she was pregnant and had I tried that?! (she had no nausea or vomiting with either pregnancy)... It really grated on me!!

For a few weeks I had such a severe sugar aversion I couldn't even eat blueberries (this didn't last and the weight piled on).

The only healthy obsession I had was apples, it wasn't a craving as such, but they were the only thing that (temporarily) got rid of the grim taste in my mouth. I was eating about 5 a day, I could never get my head around the fact that it meant I needed to by 35 apples with my weekly shop, so then would run out and start to panic.

As for the fridge...I had to psych myself up to open it, and had a fridge opening/ breathe holding routine... It seems funny now, but was deadly serious at the time! OP maybe you could clean her fridge one day when your daughter isn't around and get rid of any odours... That might be helpful and supportive for her.

If I smelled anything cooking in my first pregnancy I couldn't then eat it. I survived mostly on bowls of cereal and mashed potato (not together). I didn't have hyperemesis, just continuous nausea for about 24 weeks.

Good. I’m glad she was ok with it but just be really careful passing judgment. I’ve totally fallen out with my mother because of her constant meddling and commenting on my decisions. It can ruin your pregnancy. But my mum isn’t obviously as nice as you as she would never cook for me or help out.

There's absolutely no harm in giving her things to heat up...what a nice thing to do.

We lived off M&S food that could just be bunged in the oven/microwave when I was of with DS2. Some hone made food from my mum would have been nicer.

I had little to no appetite in the first trimester. I would get a third of the way through my usual portion size and have to stop! Grazing little and often seemed to work (and helped to keep nausea at bay).
