So I have midwife at 11.30 and obviously need a full bladder I've just done my morning wee because it's impossible to hold untill then so when should I start drinking again enough to fill a sample for the appointment? I don't want to start to early then be busting for a wee

Is it a scan or just a midwife appointment? If it’s just a standard appt you only need enough wee to do a sample, which isn’t much at all.

Bluebirdsky · 11/04/2018 08:24

Do you have a scan today? Unless it's an early pregnancy scan you shouldn't need a full bladder.
If you do I would say start drinking about an hour before, that always seems to have worked for me.

SoyDora · 11/04/2018 08:24

Sample pots are small and you only need enough to dip.

M0reGinPlease · 11/04/2018 08:25

Yes, you only need a tiny bit for a sample- just enough for them to dip the stick into. Do you have any sample bottles at home? I used to get them from the MW then last thing before I left for my apt do a wee and take that with me.

tinytoucan · 11/04/2018 08:25

I think when I went they said drink a pint about an hour before? That was for a scan rather than a routine appointment though

Waterfountain97 · 11/04/2018 08:31

I have just a routine appointment I'm 26 weeks +4 and last time I went just before I left home and couldn't give a sample and they told me to go buy travel soap bottles from boots and wee in them! But I'm not spending £6 on 3 bottles I'm going to throw away 😫 So I'll just have to take along a plastic cup and do it during my appointments ( gross I know but they didn't have any urine pots last time ) so should I drink just 1 bottle around an hour before? Will that give my bladder enough time to get some urine

I'm terrible at this and never manage to supply any pee when I am actually there so my midwife just gives me a pot to take with me each time I see her lol May be worth asking for future!

amysaurus87 · 11/04/2018 08:33

If your having a scan then you will need a full bladder, particularly if this is your 12 week scan, so I'd recommend drinking over a pint of water an hour before and that should be enough.

If it's just a standard midwife appointment then you literally need just enough for them to dip, what I usually do is drink a glass of water before I leave and that's usually enough, however I'm 39 weeks so I can be going to the toilet 4/5 times an hour!

lornathewizzard · 11/04/2018 08:34

Erm do they not give you the sterile tube things that you screw a lid on?

Almostthere15 · 11/04/2018 08:38

That's ridiculous, they are meant to have their own pots. If you ever do need to buy some you can buy at a pharmacist for cheaper.

You shouldn't need to hold urine particularly, I'd start drinking about 9.30, don't drink a huge drink, just sips over time

Waterfountain97 · 11/04/2018 08:39

@lornathewizzard
Nope last time they told me to just take the strip and wee on it but because I had wee left I covered one square 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Almostthere15
I know when she said to buy soap bottles I did give her a funny look, and I will pop to chemist before my appointment and see if they have any thankyou

twobambinos · 11/04/2018 08:40

U can get the urine sample pots in a chemist for pretty cheap maybe 50p

amysaurus87 · 11/04/2018 08:42

That's very odd OP! Usually you get given a pot to do your sample in and they dip a test stick in and then tip the rest of your sample away.

AreWeDoingThisNow · 11/04/2018 08:44

If you've got something you can transport wee in I'd just do it before you go and take it with you.

TMI - my aim is rubbish so I had a 'wee jug' and decanted.

My midwife gave me a pot to wash and reuse (one each, cuts innit), but any smallish sealable container would do once washed out.

Otherwise just don't wee between now and then and you should have enough for a sample if you drink a normal amount.

Scrumptiousbears · 11/04/2018 08:51

I saw my midwife at my doctors surgery and they gave me an empty pot every time to use for the next appointment. They also preferred a same of the first wee of the day as well.

ShutTheFridgeUp · 11/04/2018 09:02

I got a sample pot from the doctors and just use that each time I go. I sterilise in hot water after each use.

Bluebirdsky · 11/04/2018 18:15

How did you get on @Waterfountain97 did they have any bottles today?

RosaBaby2 · 11/04/2018 18:22

I always forget to do my sample in advance but they really only do need a drip to dip test so don’t worry too much.

I drank so much for a scan once as I had been told I needed to that I was sick on the way to the hospital whilst driving GrinConfused when I arrived they said I didn’t need a full bladder Hmm

Ask reception at your GP for a pot. What a weird thing to say to do it in bottles!!! I get a fresh sterile one every time.

Waterfountain97 · 11/04/2018 19:28

@Bluebirdsky
Thankyou for checking up all okay but nope I had to go buy one for 70p from chemist ( not a lot) but when the midwife is meant to have them it's abit of a pain and TMI my aim is not very good so you can only imagine !

@FranticallyPeaceful

MW gives me a pot at the end of each appointment and I take a sample in with me the next time.

I have got urine pots at home though because our poor cat was poorly once and the vet asked us to take a urine sample in. I waited about 48 to get this bloody sample because cat wouldn't go and so that was another two days Puss was left untreated and then waiting for test results when I could have taken a sample with me to the original appointment. Lesson learnt and now I have a stash if I ever need in the future (for me and the cat!)

Got a big old bag of sterile, sample pots. Maybe 12 pots or more from Amazon or eBay for a couple of quid.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 12/04/2018 06:55

Some GP surgeries don’t provide urine pots anymore, it’s a complete PITA. I assume it’s a cost saving excerise.

You can wee in anything that’s clean. Surely you have a jam jar or plastic bottle?
