I'm suffering with really bad heartburn, it gets worse every day. Its waking me up a few times through the night and i have it a lot through out the day. I'm only 24 weeks almost. I've been through 10 pints of milk since friday afternoon. It seems to help for an hour or a few hours and then its back with a vengance but then i am either sick because i have drank so much milk or it just doesn't work. I didn't have it till much later on with DD1. I am really struggling to sleep tonight because off it. Anyone else suffering too?

Yes, I have been! I find water helps a lot but then I wake up to wee more :(
Have you tried Tums? Or own brand versions of them? They are the chalky antacid tablets and can be sucked or chewed, you can have a few of them
A day

Peppermint tea helps with my heartburn -I think this is safe in pregnancy.
Gaviscon is good too and I’m sure that’s ok to take, my sister lived on it when pregnant.

Skisunsnow · 02/04/2018 06:25

I suffered badly with my 2nd and 3rd babies. Basically survived on the chewable gaviscon from about 16 weeks until the end! Sleeping with your head and upper chest raised by a pillow will also help at night.

SamanthaH92 · 02/04/2018 06:28

Thanks ladies, i will be heading to my local pharmacy today to get something. Been drinking milk for an hour and now i just feel incredibly sick but the heartburn is still there! I'm going to be so tired today been up this early xx

Ask your gp about Omeprazole - mine was unbearable but now completely gone. It’s pregnancy safe

mummabubs · 02/04/2018 06:31

Gaviscon 100%- both flavours taste absolutely revolting but in my experience it was the only thing that got rid of my heartburn. Hope you get some relief soon OP, it really is horrible!! Xx

SamanthaH92 · 02/04/2018 06:37

It really is horrible. I was prescribed gaviscon i think in the third trimester with DD1. But i know they can no longer prescribe you it. I will defiently be getting something today. OH is going to be upset when he gets up and realises he can't have a cup of tea because theres not enough milk left lol xx

Mine was awful in my last pregnancy. It was acid reflux, and a couple of time it made me vomit. I soldiered on with gaviscon for months, which didn't work very well, and now I can't understand why I didn't just go to the gp for some omeprazole. I urge you to do what I did not.

AndWhat · 02/04/2018 06:46

I should have had shares in gaviscon the amount I went through. Up side as soon as baby was out it went the next day. Never had it again!

SamanthaH92 · 02/04/2018 06:55

I see my midwife next week so i will defiently mention it to her then see what she thinks is best to take. I have been hugging the toliet for about 10 minutes and now think there is no point in the slightest going back to bed now 😔 xx

I was guzzling milk just like you for weeks thinking it was helping. Midwife then pointed out that milk can actually make it worse Confused
I eased off the milk and got prescribed ranitidine which was a godsend.

Now at 37 weeks nothing helps, I'm eating my body weight in vanilla ice cream which gives me temporary relief. Definitely go see your GP and get something stronger it's miserable trying to sleep with heartburn/reflux

InRainbows · 02/04/2018 08:14

Heartburn is just torture! Im 33 weeks had it everyday since 12 weeks just gets progressively worse every day. I got gaviscon tablets on prescription last week so I think it depends on your area, I find they do help soothe it. I also cut out all the red devil food - orange juice, coffee etc and am breaking my meals down into 6 small meals a day. I read that coconut water helps but I hate the stuff, also I'm one for the peppermint tea club! Good Luck

Lilonetwo · 02/04/2018 08:15

You can buy gaviscon from the supermarket shelves. I've been drinking it like a cocktail before I go to bed every night. (Not really just a gulp every night)

The chewable tablets are ok for day time use but the liquid is great. Couldn't be without it

Astrid2 · 02/04/2018 08:17

Milk is quite fatty so although helps initially with the burning, it actually can make it worse!

You need to get the pink Gaviscon Advance, and ask you GP about Ranitidine or Omeprazole. I ended up on both as I had such awful reflux in the last few weeks.

villainousbroodmare · 02/04/2018 08:20

Omeprazole is the only genuinely useful thing for me. It's awful isn't it? Flowers

BakedBeeeen · 02/04/2018 08:21

Gaviscon advance liquid. Went through gallons of it but it did work!

FlaviaAlbia · 02/04/2018 08:21

Go to the Dr and ask for Omazaprole for pregnancy reflux, it's life changing.

I took it in my second pregnancy after not knowing about it in my first and it made such a difference! I could forget I was pregnant a lot of the time. When I wasn't being kicked by a baby anyway Smile

FairfaxAikman · 02/04/2018 08:23

Ranitidine user here. I was chucking up nightly from 32 weeks before I got it.
Have only chucked up since if I've forgotten to take a tablet/taken it too late.

Middleoftheroad · 02/04/2018 08:28

When I was pregnant with twins I was downing a bottle of Gaviscon a night.

I ended up drinking Frij milkshake instead, which really helped (not my waistline).

I never had heartburn pre pregnancy and now, 12 years later, it's a lasting legacy of pregnancy that only Nexium can cure.

Pumkins · 02/04/2018 09:47

I haven't seen it suggested here but I was prescribed peptac liquid.
It neutralises the acid and sits at the top of your stomach to prevent reflux itself. I guzzled it after each meal and when I woke up at night and slept on 4 pillows to be upright. Also I ate as healthy as I could (not too spicy not too fat) to avoid worsening it. Still carries gavison on me everywhere fornemergency relief in the day too.
It did reduce it enough to be comfortable and when she started dropping lower symptoms got better too.
It's safer than Omeprazole and Lanzoprazole doctors tend to give that last resort as it can have risks in a long term use as they work differently from other antacid tablets.
I would most definitely upgrade slowly - no milk, take gaviscon instead before symptoms hit and if not enough relief ask for peptac I swore by it. Tastes awful but worked a treat!
Then if that doesnt relieve it enough seek more aggressive approach like omeprazole.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 02/04/2018 09:50

So far gaviscon is keeping it just under control for me (I am 35 weeks and have had it since 20). Milk would make it worse!

FairfaxAikman · 02/04/2018 09:58

I had peptic first @Pumkins but was still chucking up.

guesswhosback · 02/04/2018 10:33

You can get gaviscon prescribed by Gp.
I did. Near the end of pregnancy I could go through 500 ml bottle in 2/3 days it was that bad.

Astrid2 · 02/04/2018 10:34

Peptac is the same as Gaviscon, just the cheaper version they prescribe I think!
