I'm suffering with really bad heartburn, it gets worse every day. Its waking me up a few times through the night and i have it a lot through out the day. I'm only 24 weeks almost. I've been through 10 pints of milk since friday afternoon. It seems to help for an hour or a few hours and then its back with a vengance but then i am either sick because i have drank so much milk or it just doesn't work. I didn't have it till much later on with DD1. I am really struggling to sleep tonight because off it. Anyone else suffering too?

Stop the milk. It feels like it’s helping but you’re making it worse.

Yes to seeing a dr for a prescription. In the meantime ask the pharmacist for Peptac or whatever other generic alternative to Gaviscon they stock. It’s much, much cheaper.

Thanks ladies. I have been and bought something for it and will be mentioning it next week when i go to the midwife xx

I don't understand why everyone is telling you to get a prescription... I got wilkos homebrand antacids. They're really cheap and work brilliantly. You can take up to 16 a day if you have it really bad.

Ive been on omoprozol now for years. Before i went on it i tried gaviscon milk and everything. I definitely agree with PP see if your GP can prescribe it for you its a life changer. Xx

Good God stop drinking so much milk. Milk is difficult to digest, that will be making it much worse after the initial cooling!

SamanthaH92 · 02/04/2018 15:52

Foggymist yes thats whats making me sick i think

So ladies it was the tums i bought. I have taken 3 through out the day tried to space them out as your only allowed 7 it says when pregnant. Upon further reading of the packet it says it may effect other medicines. So i googled it and apprently antiacids can decrease the effects of aspirin and i am on 75mg of aspirin a day. I think i best make an appointment and see what is safe x

Don't drink milk, it actually makes heartburn worse in the long run despite the initial relief as it makes you produce even more acid. Try gaviscon or rennie tablets and if they don't help see your GP who can prescribe you some ranitidine or omeprazole tablets.

SamanthaH92 · 03/04/2018 08:18

Google says any antiacids can decrease the effects of aspirin so I'm just going to go to the doctors and see what they suggest x

Good plan, hope you get sorted, it's utterly grim Flowers

RubyBoots7 · 03/04/2018 10:41

Definitely go to your GP. Gaviscon tends to help but if it's really bad, then a prescription of omeprazole or ranitidine might help. I had 20mg Omeprazole and it was helping, then another GP said it wasn't licensed for pregnancy (wrong!) and gave me ranitidine, which wasn't as effective. Asked my consultant obs and I got a script for omeprazole again but 40mg (max dose in pregnancy). Of course there are potential side effects to all meds but compared to being sick in your sleep and in pain all the time...It's now a lot better even though I think the underlying hb/reflux has got worse as baby gets bigger. Medic is the only one who can prescribe, I don't think most midwives can (unless they are nurse prescribers) so I wouldn't wait until you see the midwife.

Drinking lots of fluids is generally advised against as it dilutes the stomach acid and can make hb worse. Esp avoid drinking lots with meals. Plus all the usual advice around not eating spicy or fatty foods if poss, don't eat late before bed, etc etc. It is pretty grim though isn't it, I feel for you!

I didn't know not to drink loads lol. I drink water like a fish and have 2 cans of coke a day. I drink lots of water to try help thin my blood as well as the aspirin. They are aiming for a bigger baby this time as DD was small. We didn't know but apprently DDs umbilical cord had clots in because my blood was too thick xx
