Moses Basket or Next to Me?

I am 23+3 and starting to think about what needs buying. I really like the idea of the Next to Me but at £150 they are expensive!

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether the next to me is worth the extra? Is a moses basket just as good, or do you prefer one over the other?

Thank you in advance!

I wondered this too OP! This is my first so I've no experience, but we looked at both and decided on a Moses basket.
Couple of reasons...

The price of the Next to Me seemed a lot to only get up to 6 months out of it - a nice Moses basket can cost far less!
I'm not sure how easy it would be to move from one side to the other and I like the thought of DH and I being able to both see to the baby through the night (I know we could swap sides in bed but I like MY side Grin)

The Chicco still has lots of positives though, can't say I wouldn't get one in future if we had another.

Its so hard isn't it! This is our first too, we were quite set on the next to me but now I am starting to write my list the costs seems to be adding up!
I liked the fact it is a travel cot too, and you can see them so easily in the night!

Personally I love my next to me crib. I used it for DD1 for 6/7 months before she went in her own room, and having bought a new inexpensive mattress, I'm now using it for DD2. Also good that you can change the angle of the crib (providing side is up) for babies that don't like to lie flat.

The problem I had with a Moses basket was DD1 was a very long baby so grew out of it very quickly. The next to me can seem a bit big for a newborn though so I have rolled up towels underneath the fitted sheet to kind of provide a bit of comfort around the top of the head and down each side (like a sleepyhead)

But obviously a Moses basket can be moved around a lot easier so kind of depends if you want to be able to do that. Mine slept in bouncy chair/buggy/sling during the day so I never needed to move the crib

Hope that helps Grin

We got a second hand next to me and a new mattress for it. Was brilliant. They are bigger than a Moses basket, you're unlikely to get 6 months out of a Moses basket.

We had both, next to me for upstairs and Moses basket for downstairs, the next to me isn't easy to move up and down stairs.

BonjourMinou · 23/03/2018 09:14

We have a next to me. Bought a Moses basket for first baby and it drove me to distraction, baby wouldn't settle and it's a pain in the bum taking them in and out to breastfeed.

Next to me is SO much easier. You don't have to get a brand new one, we bought one second hand from fb marketplace for about £50 I think, then bought a brand new mattress for £20 from amazon.

BabyBooDue · 23/03/2018 09:14

We were lucky in that we've had a travel cot bought for us so I didn't have to take that into consideration..

I know people say it's easier to see the baby but I've just looked over at my Moses basket at the end of the bed and it's actually bed height, so I'll probably be able to see baby in that just as easily!

I agree with what you've said about costs adding up - I'm lucky in that we could pretty much afford to get whatever we wanted but I made a conscious decision to not spend more than necessary. I've got a second hand but immaculate Moses basket with a new mattress, my travel system was less than £300 and I've bought minimum clothes for now.

GeekyWombat · 23/03/2018 09:22

Both of mine were like wild animals thrashing about in the Moses basket. They both hated them and never slept in them. With our first the first night of sleep we had without her being held by one of us was two weeks in and we actually put her in the car seat at the bottom of our bed in desperation. It was bleak!

Someone recommended a Baby Bay to us and we bought it in desperation on the credit card when she was 18 days old. She slept in it until we transferred her into her own room at 10 months (we lowered it a bit to minimise any danger of rolling as she got bigger). DS slept in it from day one. We both believe it’s the best money we spent on anything for either of our DC. They’re reasonably priced on EBay, even if you buy the frame and get a new mattress.

PistFump · 23/03/2018 09:35

I'm going for a next 2 me this time. They are quite pricey, but we co-slept with ds between us last time and I don't feel safe doing that again so I think the n2m is the next best option.

Fuzzyduck21 · 23/03/2018 09:37

We didn't have a Moses basket for dc1 and he looked so small in the next 2 me and seemed like he was a bit lost in it and didn't settle well. This time in getting a Moses basket to put into the next 2 me and then when it out grows then Moses basket I'll transfer it straight to next 2 me. Don't know if it'll work but worth a go!

charley39 · 23/03/2018 09:47

We have the next 2 me and can’t fault it. Great that we can raise the mattress at the top end and plenty of room once they start growing. We use a grobag and found that our boy has always felt secure in this and no worries about him wriggling under sheets. For personal reasons I would never go for a Moses basket and the next 2 me is a lot bigger than the other types available. We are fortunate that we have our living room and bedroom on the same floor and so can just wheel it between the two. If you are tight on space in the bedroom a Moses basket might be more handy but they don’t last long by the time they start growing :)

PalePinkSwan · 23/03/2018 09:49

Next2me will last a lot longer than a Moses basket, and is really helpful for night feeds if breastfeeding as you just pull the baby towards you, feed lying down, roll them back in and go back to sleep.

Always found Moses baskets a bit pointless tbh.

You can buy either secondhand anyway, just get a new mattress.

Sushirolls · 23/03/2018 09:53

My daughter is having the chicco next to me, but I'm buying it for her as a gift x Is there a family member who may like to buy you one too? X

SentinelWoo · 23/03/2018 09:53

I bought a next to me after battling with a Moses basket for the first three weeks.

Thoroughly regret not getting one in the beginning and DS slept in the basket for all of 3-5 mins in total! Next to me lasted until just before 6 months.

0310Star · 23/03/2018 09:54

Thanks everyone!
I may look into a 2nd hand next to me, the reviews are brilliant and a lot of people seem to comment on them lasting longer size wise than a moses basket

Someone also suggested to us that they are good for getting them used to sleeping in their own bed??

IHateYourCarpet · 23/03/2018 09:58

We have a next2me. It's been fantastic! DS sleeps a thousand times better being able to see us though does like to stick his arm and leg in the bed. The best thing about it for us has been being able to tilt the mattress, it was invaluable when DS has a cold and bronchiolitis. He's a pretty long baby, but he should fit in it till around six months. He gets a bit annoyed that he can't thrash around in it though, he likes to flap around Grin

INeedNewShoes · 23/03/2018 10:01

I wouldn't buy a second hand next to me unless all the fabric is washable (perhaps it is?).

We were handed down a Moses basket. DD slept very well in it and I had no trouble lifting her in and out and could peek over the side from my bed to check her. I think her not being able to see me constantly might have played a part in her being such a good sleeper. She self settled from early on and would wake up and be happy in her moses basket looking out the window for a few minutes before I got involved.

mehhh · 23/03/2018 10:10

We had both as a family member lent us a Moses

I'd go for the next to me, dd is still in hers now at nearly 8 months and will stay in there till she gets too big (probably a couple of months off), few points below:

She was in Moses for a couple of months, you definitely don't get the same use out of them which is why I bought Chicco although they're more expensive you get more use

At first I didn't find Chicco useful as I was still getting up to change and feed but now she's 8 months sometimes just needs a dummy popping back in so it's a god send for that

The Chicco is quite big and wide so we use a sleepyhead inside which works brilliantly to keep her snug, swaddling would probably help but dd hated not being able to sleep with her arms up

I'd think about how long you want baby in your room for, I knew I wanted dd with me for a while so i went for Chicco knowing she'd be in it longer as I didn't want a big cot in my room

readysetcake · 23/03/2018 10:37

The Next to me was a life saver! DD hated the Moses basket! Also lasts 6 months plus. Now way a Moses basket would last that long. Will be using it again with new mattress. Bet there are loads of second hand ones online and you could get a new mattress for it.

MeredithShepherd · 23/03/2018 12:04

Does anyone have any thoughts on a snuzpod? I like the fact you can lift the top off like a Moses basket...

GreyCloudsToday · 23/03/2018 12:09

I'm going with a Next2Me for kid number 2 as the Moses was rubbish. But I do understand your concern with the costs - it's easier with the second as there's not that huge financial outlay.

WasThatPlaceTHESUN · 23/03/2018 12:23

I wouldn't bother with a Moses basket, you will never get 6 months' use out of it like you would a co-sleeper cot. My SIL had a Moses basket and all three of her kids outgrew it by around 12 weeks. If you have a pram carrycot approved for overnight sleeping it will do the same job and save you some money.

MeredithShepherd We have a Snuzpod and have loved using it, although we've never taken the top off as it's pretty heavy to lift up and down the stairs.

bluechameleon · 23/03/2018 12:31

We have a next to me but so far it is basically a very expensive shelf as DS will only sleep with me. It's very handy for keeping my book, water bottle etc on though, and for doing nappy changes. He did sleep in the for an hour this morning so that's progress.

0310Star · 23/03/2018 13:11

Thanks everyone! I think you have all made my mind up that the Next to Me is well worth the money so I think we'll go with one of those :)

My baby was born in September and we hadn't really bought anything. Just relied on things given to us! Partly because of costs but also because I didn't know what kind of Mum I was going to be. We were given a brand new Moses basket and he was perfectly happy in it but I began to get exhausted getting up to sit up and feed him (EBF) in the night so he eventually made is way into our bed and we now co sleep- which I love more than I ever thought I would! Next time around I will definitely buy a next to me crib as I'll be more confident about co sleeping and breastfeeding while lying down.
