I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@StatisticallyChallenged so sorry to hear about you felt so rubbish at DH birthday :-(

@nailsathome love that idea! You could have a HG section in the supermarket... Like the gluten free section only blander!!

Btw have found a toothpaste/mouthwash combo that is less likely to make me sick in case that helps anyone else... It's ultradex. The toothpaste doesn't froth up and the mouthwash has the mint flavouring in a separate packet so you don't have to add it if you don't want to. Sadly it's quite pricey for what it is but has helped me brush my teeth without chunks of vomit in my mouth every time!!

LucindaE · 01/04/2018 10:55

StatisticallyChallenged It certainly sounds as if you need new meds or somethhing added. Sorry about your OH's birthday being spoilt for you.
My usual spiel - do you think a good anti acid might help?
Everyone: Maybe I should add Scotch pankakes to the list? Lol about the Hypermesis section of a supermarket. A sign should say, ''Hyperemesis Section: Warning: The foods on display here are NOT recommended for those seeking a balanced or healthy diet'. Sad

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/04/2018 11:23

I'm not sure what I need tbh - I've never had an anti acid prescribed so thats a possible. This morning the nausea and retching was so violent and unbearable but I just couldn't quite be sick (let's face it, sometimes it's a blessed relief to actually throw up) and ended up having to make myself at which point i was so so sick. Feel briefly more human for now but I'll be hammering on gp door on Tuesday I think.

The hyperemesis section would make the free from zone look ultra exciting wouldn't it!

Foodylicious · 01/04/2018 12:10

You can by ranitidine in most supermarkets. And most are open tomorrow I Think?
It's considered safe and what a few of us on here have

Foodylicious · 01/04/2018 12:11

I'm also still eating lots of Tums a day ( but not the blue ones, they are grim)

songbirdnumber1 · 01/04/2018 12:13

I've just been admitted to the gynae ward for some fluids and antisickness meds asunable to keep anything down for nearly 48 hours Envy

hotchocolate86 · 01/04/2018 13:07

Glad you’ve been admitted songbird. I hope the meds and fluids help.

RockinRobinn · 01/04/2018 13:21

I've not tried scotch pancakes but they do sound good unfortunately for me dairy leaves a really bad taste at the back of my mouth so no butter for me. Also does anyone else seem to be getting way thicker saliva than usual?
@songbirdnumber1 sorry to hear you've had to be admitted but happy you are getting the help and I'm hopeful that it might help to make you feel a bit better. I certainly felt less like a dried up prune afterwards if nothing else x

LucindaE · 01/04/2018 13:44

songbird Really sorry you have to be in hospital over Easter Day, but the fluids should really help. I hope the Hyperemesis Section wouldn't be blockaded by the Ginger Brigade...
StatisticallyChallenged I hope GP can find something that helps a bit; that sounds awful. Good advice from others as ever.

Statisticallychallenged · 01/04/2018 15:35

Sorry to hear that songbird, here's hoping they manage to get you feeling better!

I forgot I got dh to pick up gaviscon - they've helped a bit in the evenings.

Just back from lunch at mil...had that bizarre situation where you have to stop yourself eating because you're feeling queasy but simultaneously absolutely starving!!! I think being so sick earlier helped a bit tbh

songbirdnumber1 · 01/04/2018 19:04

Hanks for the kind messages. They're discharging me now and sent me home with stemetil and cyclizine. My ketones have come right down so they're happy to let me home. Feeling much better with some fluids in me and can't wait to get in my own bed.

Foodylicious · 01/04/2018 19:18

That's good to hear songbirdnumber1

Hope you have a restful night

Toscacat · 01/04/2018 19:33

Hi. Am 36+4 week so nearly there but wondered when most people stopped the antisickness medication. So far when I've tried I start vomiting again.

hotchocolate86 · 01/04/2018 19:36

Hi toscacat I was on ondansetron until the birth in my last pregnancy.

I’m pleased to hear the fluids helped songbird. I hope you get some relief for a while.

eallison88 · 01/04/2018 21:36

Hi all. Hope everyone has had a calm day.

Lucinda may remember me, I was a 'frequent flyer' this time 3 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. Until about 2 or 3 months ago, there was no way I was having another baby. But this has changed. And now all I'm thinking about is another baby.

I'm here to sort of gatecrash (And offer encouragement/support to those of you currently fighting HG) and see if any of you have any advice about second pregnancies. I feel like I've forgotten the reality of how awful life was while I was pregnant, and I'm worried I'm going to realize that getting pregnant is an awful idea only when it's too late....

Aw12345 · 01/04/2018 21:51

@songbirdnumber1 really glad you're doing a bit better, long may it continue :-) Hope you get lots of rest tonight

@eallison88 sadly I have no advice as is only my first pregnancy but am already worrying about thinking of having another!

xx

seizethecuttlefish · 01/04/2018 22:44

Eallison hi! I'm on my second hg pregnancy. 5 years apart. It all started earlier this time and it's been bad but in 5 weeks I should be saying hello to baby. It's survivable but not enjoyable!
Toscacat I'm due shortly and Ive managed to reduce to one ondansetron a day but feeling pretty rubbish. Not sick just constant nausea. Consultant just advised me to take what I need and I don't need to stop them.
Songbird nothing beats your own bed! Hope you're feeling much better?
Rocking don't know if it's the same but I seem to be drooling loads. Pregnancy is so attractive.
Hugs to all. I have an ill, nearly 5 year old, so I've used it as an excuse to be cuddled up with him in bed!

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 02/04/2018 06:34

Eallison I’m in a similar situ. Dh and I are ttc number 2 after 7 years of me saying I can never ever go through pg again and she would be an only child. I still can’t decide if I’m making a mistake as it took me years to get over the trauma I found hg mentally and have told dh I may well change my mind! But I don’t want to live with regret.

moomoo85 · 02/04/2018 08:19

Hello, I have been reading but thought I would post to say hi.

I'm 8 weeks today and struggling a lot. I had very severe vomiting in my pregnancy with my son (who is nearly four and it is just the last 6 months or so I have felt ready to do it again) and just avoided admission with regular Im injections from my GP along with orals. Thankfully it went at about 20 weeks. This time I have now been sick for the last 2.5 weeks. I am on regular cyclizine which takes the edge off and have only needed one im so far. Last 24 hours have been grim haven't been able to keep much down other than flat coke. Hoping today is a better day.

LucindaE · 02/04/2018 10:28

Welcome back to Ealisson - of course, I remember you - and I hope you get it far less badly this time. For you and Yule I can only say, that I do regret not going for it again. Eallison Thank you so much; your help and experience will be much appreciated.
moomoo85 Welcome. Sorry that you are suffering. As you have been following the thread and are a veteran, I certainly don't need to give my usual spiel about the juice of tinned fruit and that coke and kesostix. I am glad cyclzine normally helps, but if you have only been able to keep coke down, it defintely sounds as if you do need something stronger from the GP. Am I being stupid - IV can't be fluids straight from the doctor?
Toscacat As others say, a lot of women on here are on Ondansetron (sometimes a whole cocktail of meds) until the birth. It might be worth ringing up Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 . They will ring back with good advice. There's a brilliant retired doctor who is very sympathetic who advises.
StatisticallyChallaned I am glad you can get on with Gaviscon. So long ago, when I was suffering, the doctor insisted it was the only safe anti acid in pregnancy, but even that long ago, that just wasn't true, and it does seem to make people bloated. I had some spectacular Pink Foam Vomits - Horror Film Style.
Seize You have been very stoic. Great advice, as ever, for those tentative about ttc.
songbird I am glad you have been let out and the fluids have helped. I hope that combination is really effective. Remind me - did you say you were on cyclizine by itself before?
Waves to AW12345 and everyone. I hope everyone is coping today.
Apologies if I've rudely ignored anyone.

NicoleSalski · 02/04/2018 10:28

Hi all. I hope nobody minds me joining. First time mummy at 8+2 and have absolutely no idea what's normal or not! Have quite horrible vomiting and nausea (have 3 Easter eggs waiting for me and haven't touched one which is never a good sign!). Vomiting 10-15 times a day. On Stemetil but doesn't seem to do anything much. Can't get to docs as bank holiday and to top it off, have a lovely wisdom tooth infection! (Woe is me!). Can anyone advise on whether this is hyperemesis or not? And how far you let it go before you traipse down to dreaded a&e...

Sorry to see so many people are suffering with this. I keep telling myself it'll all be worth it in the end!

booandbumpp · 02/04/2018 11:07

@NicoleSalski sorry to hear your not well! Are you keeping water down? I had to go to hospital when I hadn't kept water down for 24 hours. Doctors checked my urine for ketones and they were showing at 4+. I do think you can get keto sticks from the pharmacy so you could try those if your not keeping water down and ring local gynae ward who might get you in for fluids!

NicoleSalski · 02/04/2018 11:08

Thanks @booandbumpp - it's really hard when you don't have your first midwife apt until 11 weeks. MN has been my main source of support and advice for this first two months! I'll have a look in boots and see if I can pick some up Smile

NicoleSalski · 02/04/2018 11:12

@booandbumpp and yes I keep it down for about 20 minutes before throwing it all back up again!

Boredoftryingusernames · 02/04/2018 11:24

Nicole sorry you are suffering, esp with a tooth infection on top - awful!!
There is much blurring between severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and HG and I wouldn't worry too much about which you have, you just feel awful and need help. Certainly go back to the Dr after the bank holiday for alternative meds, if you are not keeping anything down then obviously A&E (lots of maternity units won't see you directly this early, but can phone and check with yours).
I believe the official definition of HG is more than 5% bodyweight, dehydration and electrolyte (salt) inbalance. Though in practice not sure many people have blood tests to check their electrolytes.
There is great advice on this thread by Lucinda if you look back over the last week or so about foods/drinks to try, and getting ketostix to check urine for ketones - a sign of needing fluids/help at hospital in most cases.
Personally my husband took me to A&E after trying a few meds (cyclizine and stemetil) that hadn't worked and I was being sick 10-15 times a day. I was hardly weeing so was dehydrated, but had no ketones so didn't get fluids (frustratingly!), I did however get injected with meds and put on ondansetron which stopped the weight loss and reduced the vomits to 3 or so vomits daily. I had lost about a stone, 8% bodyweight at that point. A&E transferred me to the maternity unit at the same hospital, despite me not being able to go straight there from GP, and I could then go directly back there for more help. If in doubt then go, they can at least inject some meds, which with your vomiting means they are much more likely to work than oral tablets.
Hope that helps a bit!? Good luck, it's grim!
