Doctors Appointment - confused

BIUE · 14/03/2018 14:36

I am going to the doctors tomorrow at 10:50 to see if I'm actually pregnant. I'm not sure what I'm meant to say to the doctor because I heard most surgeries don't test for pregnancy? I'm quite confused, need some guidance!

Might need a bit more information on this - why exactly are you going to the doctors to find that out...?

Just as in my experience, my GP wouldn't do pregnancy testing at all unless involving other complications. Tests they have are just the same, if not less sensitive, than the ones you can buy yourself.

Ginmakesitallok · 14/03/2018 14:44

Is there a particular reason why you need confirmation from a dr?

BIUE · 14/03/2018 14:44

@Kittypillar my mum wants me to go to make sure and check if I'm okay and all that.

Most GP practices won’t keep pregnancy tests on site except for use in emergencies. Is there any reason your mum is worried such as health problems or complications?

Ginmakesitallok · 14/03/2018 14:46

If you've had a positive test then you don't need confirmation. What you need is to get referred to a mw - who will check your blood pressure etc at about 16 weeks.

xxxbdjaix · 14/03/2018 14:47

If you have had positive pregnancy tests I doubt they would test. They would just give you some advice take pregnancy vitamins etc and refer you.

ReinettePompadour · 14/03/2018 14:48

Have you actually done a home pregnancy test? If you have and its positive you need to book an appointment with the midwives rather than your gp. If you haven't done a test then you should do one before going to your gp.

PinkDaffodil2 · 14/03/2018 14:49

GP will probably suggest you do a pregnancy test, take folic acid / vitamin D, and book yourself in to see a midwife for a booking appointment (usually you can do this online yourself).
No reason for a GP appointment if everything is straightforward, not sure what you’re expecting them to say!

PinkHeart5914 · 14/03/2018 14:52

If you’ve had a positive pregnancy test then you are pregnant, unless you have some sort of health issue you don’t need checking over by a doctor to see if you are ok. You just need to book I’m with the midwife and start taking folic acid

If you haven’t taken a test, why not? You can get one for £1

Rodent01 · 14/03/2018 14:53

I am not normally blunt, but if you are old enough to have got pregnant why are you doing something just because your mum told you.

Don't waste a GP apt, there is ample information online about how to keep healthy and then see the midwife when you are scheduled to.

Hogtini · 14/03/2018 14:58

My GP surgery take home tests as gospel. I asked for a blood test once (neg tests but v late period) and they wouldn't do it. They only do it if there's a risk of complications.

You're best booking in with the midwife if you've had a positive test.

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/03/2018 14:58

A pregnancy test done at the surgery is the same as one done at home. Ni need for the doctor to waste a test repeating it.
At some surgeries( ours) women have an initial appointment with the GP who explains the system, checks on your general health and that you are taking folic acid. They also have paperwork for you to read before your appointment with the midwife at about 8 weeks.
This might be different at your doctor's. Ring the surgery and ask reception what you should do. Follow their advice.
Also amazed that you follow your DM's I instructions even when you think she is wrong.

BIUE · 14/03/2018 15:01

@PinkDaffodil2 she just wants to make sure everything is alright.

@ReinettePompadour I've done 9 Tesco ones that came back positive and clear blue and Sainsbury's came back negative so I'm not sure.

@PinkHeart5914 I have taken tests and the Tesco ones were positive but cb and Sainsbury's negative!

Ring your GPs sirgery and ask how to self refer to the midwives. The GP won't test routinely, just check you're happy to be pregnant and if so give you basic advice and send you on your way.

BIUE · 14/03/2018 15:05

@Rodent01 I have been advised by 2 people to make an appointment and I took the advice because they have been through it.

When I made an appointment both times I was pregnant i told the receptionist I would like an appointment to see the doctors as I am pregnant and they wanted to me to give a urine sample anyways. Even though all the pregnancy tests did had been positive.
I did tell them I had done an over the counter pregnancy test but they said to do a urine sample so they could test to make sure.

BIUE · 14/03/2018 15:06

@Hogtini I will probably go to GP just incase and then book a midwife appointment.

Hate to break it to you @BIUE, but your GP will probably question why you're even there. 9 positive pregnancy tests would be enough for them. I think they'll probably just tell you to go home and retest in several days if you aren't sure.

If you get more positive tests, call your GP surgery back and then they give you the contact details for a local midwife, who you can call for a booking-in appointment. But you need to tell your mum that you just won't achieve anything from the GP that you can't find out by yourself or by booking in with a midwife if you are pregnant. As I mentioned earlier, and someone else has above, unless a real complication arises, your GP just won't be investigating this from what you've said. You won't get anything out of the appointment and it'll be a waste of your time and theirs. Sorry but that's just the bare bones of it really.
