Doctors Appointment - confused

I am going to the doctors tomorrow at 10:50 to see if I'm actually pregnant. I'm not sure what I'm meant to say to the doctor because I heard most surgeries don't test for pregnancy? I'm quite confused, need some guidance!

I went to my gp after three positive tests to confirm the pregnancy. Tested my urine, didn't do a pregnancy test :) x

Katyx3 · 14/03/2018 15:39

Ps if you can take a sample (preferably from your first wee of the day!) with you, if they are annoyed with you asking them to test your urine at least you will be prepared and only take up a minute of their time! X

I've done 9 Tesco ones that came back positive and clear blue and Sainsbury's came back negative so I'm not sure.

If you got 9 positive tests then were definitely pregnant. Did you drink a lot of water to make yourself pee for the clear blue and Tesco tests? Drinking a lot of water dilutes the pregnancy hormones the tests are looking for and can give false negative results.

It sounds like you might be very young (or maybe have special needs), if so I think it's worth contacting the midwives early on so they can make sure you have plenty of support with the pregnancy.

With my first pregnancy i went to my GP and said "i took a pregnancy test - it was positive. What do I do now?". He didn't check anything, but gave me some basic advice and referred me to a midwife. He didn't seem bothered that I had made an appointment for this so i think its fine, especially if you don't know who to contact.

Second time i didn't go to GP, I just did an online self referral to midwife who later sent a booking appointment in post.

The GP might check your blood pressure and urine and give you some advice on diet etc. They should also let you know how to contact the midwife but as others have said I doubt they will be able to do much more to reassure you that everything is alright at this stage.

@Bluebirdsky thank you for your advice! Thanks

I have always just called the surgery and booked in for a midwife booking in appointment at 8 weeks. No need to see a gp. However, if you're very young you might get additional support. Hope all goes well!

katmarie · 14/03/2018 19:04

I went to my gp when I got a positive pregnancy test. She gave me some basic info, made sure I was taking vitamins and folic acid, answered my questions etc, and she referred me to the community midwives. It would never have occurred to me to self refer. She didn't do a test, she did tell me that false positives are extremely rare, so if the test is positive then that's usually good enough for them.

Good luck!

KittyKK · 14/03/2018 20:28

Call the surgery and ask to be referred to the local community midwives. You don’t need a doctor to tell you something you already know. Waiting times are bad enough as it is for people who are actually ill and need medical attention

@BrutusMcDogface okay thanks for the advice!
