Sore hips from laying on side during night

heatherxo · 27/02/2018 21:59

I wake up every hour or so, with pain and numbness because of laying on my side. So I'll switch side and go back to sleep, for the same to happen.
Every. Single. Night
I'm so uncomfortable whilst sleeping, and I dread going to bed at night now!
Anything I can do to make it less uncomfortable?
I'm 29 weeks.

I’ve been like this in all my pregnancies from 25 weeks+. I don’t think it resolves until delivery I’m afraid Sad

Steeley113 · 27/02/2018 22:00

A pregnancy pillow can help though!

OutyMcOutface · 27/02/2018 22:01

Put loads of pillows between your knees

pastabest · 27/02/2018 22:01

have you tried all the usuals like a pillow between your legs?

MyKingdomForBrie · 27/02/2018 22:03

I couldn’t sleep without my pregnancy pillow. 22 weeks and woke up on my front the other morning though! It’s one of my least favourite things about pregnancy Angry

IAmMatty · 27/02/2018 22:04

My left hip still hurts now and my son is five Sad

Bellamuerte · 27/02/2018 22:06

I had the same problem. A foam mattress topper made it slightly less painful but ultimately there was no way to stop the pain until after delivery, when it went away of its own accord.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 27/02/2018 22:08

I had to have at least 3 pillows between my knees to take the weight off

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 27/02/2018 22:14

Pillows between your knees and behind your back to support you.

FourCandelabras · 27/02/2018 22:14

I feel for you, just excruciating. I eventually got a memory foam mattress topper from Ikea which made a huge difference.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 27/02/2018 22:14

And one to grab hold of with you hands.

Qvar · 27/02/2018 22:16

It's evil. Paracetamol, pillows in between knees and a memory foam mattress helped

Indigo89 · 27/02/2018 22:23

I was the same and bought a dream genii pillow last week and also put a normal pillow under where my hips are for extra cushion. It's really helped.

CL1982 · 27/02/2018 22:32

Our mattress saved me but every other bed is and was horrific. I recommend 100% getting a nice thick mattress topper. I promise it will help.

ExhaustedAndHormonal · 28/02/2018 01:21

I'm the same. And often subconsciously turn to my back.. Yesterday I woke full splat like on my belly at 39 weeks... I felt awful. Baby has been fine though. I did feel very stiff and tender tho. Which was scary

Ellsiedodah · 28/02/2018 13:39

Hey heatherxo, I'm 24 weeks and suffering like you. It's become really depressing! I've been worried it's keeping the small person from sleeping through the night because I turn so much... it seems to move less in the morning now... figure it has a lie in when I get up! :-P I'm actually looking for a pilates teacher at the moment who I believe should really help the issue... the knee pain reminds me of runners knee and when I spoke to a teacher she said that exercises should be able to help tighten up the core and pelvic floor area so your hips don't have to hold the weight so much. I've also noticed my hip flexers are mega tight these days so think the lack of exercise is just not helping. MIght be worth looking into? x

Lavenderdays · 28/02/2018 13:43

Yes, I have suffered from this...I have got out of bed at times and had a good stretch (to the detriment of sleep) because of the soreness etc. I have folded a summer duvet under my sheet and have found this helps a bit and also used copious amounts of pillows. I usually sleep on my back or front so this has been really tricky for me.

mayhew · 28/02/2018 13:47

As previous pp said, you need a softer layer underneath, whether a mattress topper, a folded duvet or a sleeping bag.

ForeverHopeful21 · 01/03/2018 09:48

Another one here who has been using a folded duvet on top of my mattress. I also use pillow between knees (...tried pregnancy pillow and hated it).

In the night I do leg stretches in bed. Only for a couple of minutes but it tends to help a little.

Also get my DH to massage my hips and thighs for me before I go to bed. I get him to rub them quite vigorously and also do chopping hands movements across my thighs.

I've just started yoga - youtube has loads of videos, which I think has also helped a bit.

Spanglyprincess1 · 02/03/2018 19:22

I feel your pain, I'm 22weeks now and cant sleep due to hip pain.

heatherxo · 02/03/2018 20:54

Thanks for all the advice ladies.
Unfortunately some won't work.. I feel ill when I take paracetamol, if I stretch my legs I get cramp/pulled muscles, etc...

I slept better last night with a pillow under my hip, so looks like I definitely need a softer layer!

I've a duvet folded over on my side of the bed. Actually had to switch sides a few weeks ago as our bed and mattress is basically fucked. We are due to move house in next couple weeks so getting new bed then. I cant fucking wait!

ForeverHopeful21 · 03/03/2018 09:35

if I stretch my legs I get cramp/pulled muscles, etc

When you stretch your legs make sure your feet are flexed and NOT pointed. If you get cramp, bend at the knee and flex the foot. I heard eating bananas can help with cramp - not sure if this is true but I've been eating one every day.

heatherxo · 03/03/2018 15:23

Thank you!

I get that too and I HATE it! Just one of those things we have to live with until baby is born.
