We used the crib and cot mattresses we used the first time around. They were new for the first and had always had protectors on them and we cleaned them.

Our problem was that we couldn't find anything on the market that would fit our existing crib and cot (which are both funny sizes) the second time around and we couldn't afford to replace them both too.

We used the same one. Fairly small age gap and the mattress still looked brand new.

2.6 year age gap and yes we bought a new mattress. I didn't even consider not doing it. Mattresses can be bought quite cheaply.

My son only slept in his cot for about 11 days.. as we now co sleep
So won't be replacing that one but doubtful this baby will sleep in there either
Getting a new Moses basket one as they are cheap and he did use that more
And he only slept in the next to me crib one for about 3/4 months and I used a mattress topper as found the mattress to be way to hard! So won't be replacing that one either!

Lullaby trust:
There is some evidence to suggest that bringing in a mattress from another home might increase the risk of sudden infant death very slightly. When using your own mattress for a second (or more) time, ensure it is still firm and flat with no tears or holes, and is not sagging in places. Thoroughly clean the waterproof layer and ensure the mattress is clean and dry before making it up with fresh bed clothes.

There's some research I believe, @Newnaime, about increased SIDS risk from secondhand mattresses. At least, that's what I've read.
