...Will you buy a new cot mattress based on the research that reused cot mattresses, are associated with increased SIDS risk?

We're umming and ahhing at the moment.

There's some research I believe, @Newnaime, about increased SIDS risk from secondhand mattresses. At least, that's what I've read.

Lullaby trust:
There is some evidence to suggest that bringing in a mattress from another home might increase the risk of sudden infant death very slightly. When using your own mattress for a second (or more) time, ensure it is still firm and flat with no tears or holes, and is not sagging in places. Thoroughly clean the waterproof layer and ensure the mattress is clean and dry before making it up with fresh bed clothes.

My son only slept in his cot for about 11 days.. as we now co sleep
So won't be replacing that one but doubtful this baby will sleep in there either
Getting a new Moses basket one as they are cheap and he did use that more
And he only slept in the next to me crib one for about 3/4 months and I used a mattress topper as found the mattress to be way to hard! So won't be replacing that one either!

2.6 year age gap and yes we bought a new mattress. I didn't even consider not doing it. Mattresses can be bought quite cheaply.

Always get a new mattress, even for your own peace of mind.xxx

We used the same one. Fairly small age gap and the mattress still looked brand new.

We used the crib and cot mattresses we used the first time around. They were new for the first and had always had protectors on them and we cleaned them.

Our problem was that we couldn't find anything on the market that would fit our existing crib and cot (which are both funny sizes) the second time around and we couldn't afford to replace them both too.

I have kept ds Moses basket mattress to use for these babies when they arrive, it’s one of those wipeable ones that’s like what they use at the hospital not pvc but you get what I mean.
We used the same cot mattress from my daughter to my son as I read that as long as you know how it had been stored treat etc it should be fine. My dd was never sick etc on the mattress itself where as ds when he then used it was sick several times on it and peed on it etc so it safely went in the bin once he came out of the cot.
I also used same swinging crib mattress from dd to ds but again ds was a very sicky baby so he made sure that wouldn’t be reused too. So bought new this time for the twins to share.
I think the wipeable ones are only like the ones they use in the hospital and they don’t change them every baby? Long as it’s thoroughly cleaned and dried I don’t see the problem (providing it’s the wipeable one and you know it’s history)

I will be only because DD will still be in cot bed with original mattress. Can I ask what "risk" everyone's referring to? Genuine question. I assume it's something to do with SIDS?

Second baby for me and will need to buy a new bed anyway as my DD will only just be 2!

Yes, our first is 5 now. We used her actual cot mattress for a year (as a bedside cot) and then we've used it since for camping and travel. Her cot bed mattress again is also 5 years old and it got about 4 years of daily use. Both though cleaned after have seen their fair share of vomit and wee. I wouldn't put a new baby on that. Maybe it would be different if we only had like a 1-2 year age gap, but mattresses don't have to be ridiculously expensive, so I think I would err on the side of caution and get a new one.

We will change as 40yr old moses basket that had hubby in it as baby needs certain shape, we need a new cotbed since dd1 snapped it and is in proper bed now and the swing crib is old too.
Four years between them = new mattresses and material.

Expecting baby #3 and will be buying a new cot mattress - DC2 was a very sicky baby so the old one has seen better days! DC2 never had a Moses basket as DC1 could be trusted not to step on him etc, but we have a much smaller age gap this time so new Moses basket too. Poor soon-to-be DC3 has literally nothing else new of their own so hey ho!

We didn't. Small age gap, stored well and a waterproof mattress protector used at all times. In fact the cot mattress won't be stored at all, DS will go straight into it once DD moves to a toddler bed. I decided the risk was very small.

Hmmm. Our mattress was secondhand when we got it for our first child so I'm thinking maybe we should get a new one now. I wasn't aware of any issues with secondhand mattresses when I used it the first time, and it was in good condition (actually a ludicrously expensive mattress originally but that's doting grandparents for you!)

Currently 17wks with DC2 will be reusing DDs (2 next month) crib mattress - the cover was washed & dried thoroughly on the aired by the radiator for several days & the inside bit was antibac wiped thoroughly before being stored in a sealed vacuum bag in the loft. I'm not sure about the mattress for the cotbed. It's currently on the dismantled cotbed frame under DDs single bed in the bedroom they are going to share once DC2 is old enough to go in the cotbed.

I just hand washed the Moses basket mattress in between babies. It was just a simple sponge one anyway. Used the same one 4 times.

Sorry recommended was the wrong choice of word there. They basically say it isn't a necessity (assuming mattress is in good condition of course!).

Report
TinoTheArtisticMouse · 12/02/2018 20:14

No. It isn't recommended by the lullaby trust. The risk of sids is a second hand mattress from outside the home. www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/mattresses-and-bedding/

We kept the same mattress as both of mine sleep in a sleepyhead so it's still brand new really!

I’m thinking if keeping the same Moses basket mattress. DS only used it for a couple of months. It’s never been puked on etc, stored in a wardrobe fir a year only etc.
Will need a new cot mattress tho.

didn’t for the cot

Did for next to me baby slept in for first 3/4 months

I think if you know how it’s been used - hasn’t had lots of sick etc on it and is still firm it’s a bit different to having one you don’t know who has puked on it etc.

Report
moggle · 12/02/2018 19:58

No we haven’t. It went straight from my daughter sleeping on it to my twins. Not put in storage or anything. She had never puked on it or weed on it and it has always had a protector on it. As we are in the lowest risk classes for all the other SIDS risk factors I decided it would make negligible or no difference to the twins risk.
