Hello everyone

Okay, I know these won't be everyone's cup of tea but have to ask which do you prefer?

Alfred Finlay
Arthur Finlay

We already have an Oscar and Hugo. We live in France and my husband is French so we have to find something whihc works in either language. Any other suggestions grateful received else this poor child will be called Baby No 3 indefintely....

Thank you so much

NicMac

alfred but only cos i like alfie.

Twiglett · 28/04/2007 09:15

Alfred Finlay give you Alf / Fred / Freddie (all good)

Arthur Finlay gives you Art

oh I don't know .. the first I think

I rather like them both

My friend was considering Stanley which I think is a fab name for someone else's child

Bon Chance

collision · 28/04/2007 09:15

I actually think finlay goes better with the other names

Twiglett · 28/04/2007 09:16

Alfie is the name of a dawg though

incy · 28/04/2007 09:33

Alfred - I like Alfie and freddie as shortened versions

NotQuiteCockney · 28/04/2007 09:36

I like how Arthur sounds in French better than in English [helpful].

I'm guessing Yvan/Yvon/Yves aren't options? Or Pascal?

LadyG · 28/04/2007 09:38

Both really nice. Like Art Alfie and Finn as shortenings. Choose the one which one or both of you prefers or has some personal family significance. Sounds like you will have a lovely trio of boys !

NicMac · 28/04/2007 09:39

Thanks for these, I like Arthur in French much more than in English, I adore Finlay as a first name but DH won't have it as it means nothing in French. He says Yves reminds him of Yves Rocher, mind you he is called Cyril so he has no room to talk....

don't like arthur or alfred really, both very old fashioned.

love finlay though

nickytwotimes · 28/04/2007 09:52

all nice names, especially finlay - my late dad's name and ds's middle name!
hope that doesn't put you off!

NotQuiteCockney · 28/04/2007 09:58

I like Gaetan. Oh, and Jocylin (however it's spelled) but it's a nightmare in English of course.

treacletart · 28/04/2007 10:00

I think I like Arthur better than Alfred. Congrats on Oscar and Hugo BTW,their fab names. My brothers family are half french and needed names that worked in both languages too. He has a Leo but I remember Marcus and Louis being on their list too.

Twiglett · 28/04/2007 11:30

I had a rather lovely affair with a boy named Olivier

NicMac · 28/04/2007 11:54

Oh, yes Oliver is nice, was he French? How did I end up marrying a Cyril when there are so many nice French names? Arthur does have family significance as it was the name of my gret-grandfather. I am swaying towarsds that I must admit though it is not my first choice! Thanks for all your lovely comments, you are very kind to take the time to reply

I would go for Arthur if you are in France, it's coming back. Alfred sounds very old fashioned to me (I'm French).

PizPizPiz · 28/04/2007 12:02

I love Gabriel and Adrien. But we're having another girl !

tortoiseSHELL · 28/04/2007 12:05

I prefer Arthur. What about Aidan? We used that as ds2's middle name, and I love it (would have used it as a first name except our surname is A..... so it wouldn't have gone as well.

cameroonmama · 28/04/2007 17:53

Arthur works well in French, though I do know some Freddies too, we also have Leo, Raphael, Paul and Alex amongst our French friends, all working well in both languages!

mytwopenceworth · 28/04/2007 17:54

i vote for arthur finlay

bumperlicious · 29/04/2007 09:33

I love Arthur in a French accent!

mum2george · 29/04/2007 11:21

I love Arthur but might be slightly biased as its my Dads name and I'm a real Daddy's girl! Would love to have a DS named Arthur but sadly it just doesn't go with our family name.

unknownrebelbang · 29/04/2007 11:24

I like Alfie, but agree that Arthur with a French accent is lovely.

cece · 29/04/2007 11:26

I've always liked Didier

nachomama · 29/04/2007 11:33

Athur Finlay en francais, c'est bon ca!

Fingernails · 29/04/2007 13:14

Or Louis? It's getting more popular in Scotland (don't know about England).
