Morning sickness when to go to hospital

Kitcat159 · 07/01/2018 19:09

At what point should you go to hospital for a drip?
I have been feeling really dehydrated over the past few days as I have not been able to keep liquid or food down.
My bp has been low but I don't know when it's "too low"

What made you go to hospital?

I'm 12 weeks with my first. I don't have a midwife yet.
Feeling really rubbish.

You need to go to do your GP. Have you not had a booking in appointment or scan yet?

LemonMuffin837 · 07/01/2018 19:11

Give your delivery suite a call, they will be able to advise you wether you should go in or not :)

wasMissD · 07/01/2018 19:15

I went to the walk in centre. I got put on the drip 2 days later cos I went back as still throwing up. You need to get referred by a doctor. They check your urine, and if there are a certain amount of ketones present, you then get referred to hypremesis unit.
I felt ten times better once I had the drip. And the sickness meds injection.
Are you on anti-sickness tablets? They usually try you on those first if your ketones are ok x

Kitcat159 · 07/01/2018 19:16

I have had a booking appointment and got my scan next week.
Call my delivery suite?? I have no idea how I would contact them?

Last had ketones checked 22nd dec and was ok.
Been given citrazine hydrochloride (sp?) But not been working for the past few days. Was knocking me out but now makes me want to sleep but feel so nauseous I cant. Last time I took it I was awake all night as everytime I tried to sleep I threw up or retched violently.

@Kitcat159 sorry just noticed you said you haven't seen a midwife yet.
Call 111, I did that and they gave me the number for the delivery suite when I was really poorly at the beginning of my pregnancy

BikeRunSki · 07/01/2018 19:22

How dark is your wee? If it’s getting darker, that shows that you are becoming gradually more dehydrated. Straw coloured is normal - apple juice coloured is OK ish - black tea coloured is not!

Pregnancy Sickness Support

I speak as s veteran of 2 hyperemisis pregnancies and many rehydration drips. At my worst all I could do was melt ice cubes in my mouth.

Good luck

BakewellTart01 · 07/01/2018 19:22

Having had hyperemesis in both pregnancies it is best if you make an appt asap.
As PP have said they will check your urine for ketones and this will indicate if you are dehydrated.
If they send you in for the drip please ensure you also get anti sickness medication for when you are off the drip.
How long has the sickness been? They will also ask how often you are vomiting / wretching.
I hope you get some rest and if you can try take small sips of water or eat ice chips

BikeRunSki · 07/01/2018 19:24

Forgot to say - with very dark wee, i have been admitted through A&E.

Marcine · 07/01/2018 19:26

Did a midwife not book you in?

Call your GP first thing tomorrow for an appointment - they will be able to prescribe medication or refer you.

Kitcat159 · 07/01/2018 19:54

It was a "general midwife" that went through the booking questions.
Then to book me in I had to phone a different dept because the midwife lady forgot to tell me to go there to book my scan.
I was given citrazine hydrochloride by my gp (reluctantly) when I was 8 weeks. They are not doing anything at the moment.

You'll likely see a different midwife at each appointment, and different ones for the birth.
Your GP will be able to help you if you are dehydrated.

NimbleKnitter · 07/01/2018 20:07

Get an appointment with your gp. Take a urine sample

wasMissD · 07/01/2018 20:22

I think most of the sickness meds make you drowsy.
You'll feel like a new woman when they get you the right treatment.
I remember sobbing constantly cos I felt so poorly (son is 5MO now).

You're not alone, and it will get better. There's a hypremesis helpline where you can get support. Keep us posted x

Kitcat159 · 07/01/2018 20:39

Thanks all.
I'll call my doctor tomorrow.
I am stressing about work as I had 3 days off last week as I was so bad so I can't have more time off. I'm paranoid that I'm gonna get in trouble or lose my job so desperately trying to sort myself out.
I have an appointment on Friday for my scan so I might see if I can speak to someone then.
Or get a phone appt tomorrow or something.
Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight!

Scan appointments are usually with sonographers, not doctors or midwives.

Phone your gp tomorrow and get an appointment

BikeRunSki · 07/01/2018 20:52

Don’t fret about having time off work. By law, pregnancy related sickness must br recorded separately to ordinary sick leave, and cannot be used to penalise you. But they do need to know that you are pregnant.

see here

RemainOptimistic · 07/01/2018 20:54

Please don't stress about your job. It's illegal to sack you for pregnancy related illness. But you must inform work you're pregnant to benefit from that law.

Please get medical attention ASAP.

perfectly · 07/01/2018 21:26

As others say don't worry about work, it's against the law to discriminate against pregnant women.
Go to your doctor tomorrow morning. I went to my GP with bad morning sickness and he called an ambulance to take me to hospital straight away so be prepared you might get admitted. Wear comfy clothes and take a book! You may be there a while.
On the plus side, if you do go to hospital they will probably give you a scan so you will get to see your baby.
I feel for you, morning sickness is the pits.

Kitcat159 · 07/01/2018 21:27

I told my boss and hr at 7 weeks because I was feeling poorly. Boss has been great with it. he has recently had a baby and his wife suffered with bad sickness too.
I think he thinks I'm taking the Mick now tho. I genuinely can't help it tho.

Hubby doesn't want me to go to hospital because I will prob have to be admitted. He has told me to try eating and drinking more and if I'm still bad later he will take me.

Just managed to have 50cl of water, 2 slices of toast and an apple. Fingers crossed it stays in!!

Still feeling dizzy, shakey and like I'm gonna hurl but gotta just get on with it. :)

Also veteran of HG and ended up on drips and lovely parbinex I feel for you! I found buccol tablets which you place under top lip so much better as couldn't keep others down. Also lived off of jelly sweets and dextrose tablets!

MotherofPearl · 07/01/2018 21:31

OP, like RunBike, I'm a hyperemesis veteran - 3 pregnancies in total (one with bad morning sickness, the other two with HG diagnosed).

There is a superb long-running support thread on here run with the wonderful LucindaE who has a wealth of knowledge. Please do take a look.

In terms of dehydration and getting IV rehydration, most hospitals will offer this with 3+ ketones (some 2+). You can test your own urine with ketostix, which you can buy from any chemist (or online). In terms of medication there are several options they can try you on, so if one's not working, you need to tell them so that they can offer you something else.

I truly feel for you. Pregnancy sickness is the absolute pits. Thanks

MotherofPearl · 07/01/2018 21:32

run by, not with Blush

timeisnotaline · 07/01/2018 21:32

Why the hell would your dh say don’t go to hospital because you will be admitted?? You will only be admitted if you need to be for your health and the babies, that’s one of the stupidest things he could say. Go to hospital.

MotherofPearl · 07/01/2018 21:37

Sorry to deluge you with posts, but the best way to get treated - especially out of hours - is at an Early Pregnancy Unit - if your hospital has one. They are much more experienced at treating HG than GPs, and you can usually self-refer. They can often give you a few bags of IV fluids without admitting you, and it means you can bypass the nightmare of A&E.
