Morning sickness when to go to hospital

Kitcat159 · 07/01/2018 19:09

At what point should you go to hospital for a drip?
I have been feeling really dehydrated over the past few days as I have not been able to keep liquid or food down.
My bp has been low but I don't know when it's "too low"

What made you go to hospital?

I'm 12 weeks with my first. I don't have a midwife yet.
Feeling really rubbish.

Definitely definitely take your meds and call your doctor to get a sick note. Going in to get checked for dehydration would be wise too as you'll feel much better after a couple of bags of fluids if you are dehydrated, and then you'll find it easier to keep meds and everything else down.

Kitcat159 · 11/01/2018 07:27

Doctor said to take the meds only when I feel bad, 2 tablets up to 3 times a day. I can't take them if I'm going to work as they will make me drowsy and I won't be able to drive. I did tell her this and said I can only take them in the evenings.
As for work I can't get signed off. I have only been in 1 day this year and that was when I told people I was pregnant! Looks really dodgy that I tell people then I "bunk off" for ages. Yes I feel rotten but I have to at least try. I have to hand in my appointment letter for Friday so I can go to the scan too.
I'm really not in the mood to deal with work bit my job is relatively easy in comparison to others. I just sit at a desk and answer support tickets and calls. Nothing strenuous. I just stare at a screen all day under a bright light so get headache most days anyway.
All of my urine tests have been fine. No ketones. I just feel dehydrated in myself. Dizzy, cracked lips, really thirsty. Feels like if I move my tongue I could start a fire!
I just have to go nil-by-mouth until about 11am. Then I can usually keep something down.

Ask your gp for ondansetron. It’s much more effective....but also very expensive. Tell your gp you’re concerned you may lose your job so you desperately need to be better.

Kitcat159 · 11/01/2018 07:45

Called 111. They said to eat ginger biscuits (argh!) And drink tea. Although I said I can't keep ANYTHING down till about 11am.
They suggested going in and showing HR how bad I am.
Also have a chat with my doctor again. (Who don't open till 8.15)
Feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment.

I was signed off for 3 months at the start of last year due to my pregnancy. Morning sickness and bad health anxiety (which I suffered with anyway).
Don't feel bad being signed off with pregnancy, or for working one day this year.

BikeRunSki · 11/01/2018 07:53

Have you shown your employer the PSS/Maternity Action information about the law regarding pregnancy related sick leave? They can not penalise you. Go to your GP ASAP to ask to be signed off, speak to your employer and tell them this is what you are doing.

I totally remember the days of barely existing, not wanting to move, not being able to even sip water.

My work was hugely supportive when I had HG (twice). It’s hideous enough without additional stress.

GinIsIn · 11/01/2018 08:11

Your work CANNOT oblige you to come in, nor can they stop you going to scans or appointments - the employment rights regarding preganancy are very clear. I know you feel awful but please do read some of the info that PPs have sent you - you have very clear rights here, that your employer must acknowledge by law.

Ikanon · 11/01/2018 12:09

Being a gentle as possible your GP CAN sign you off with pregnancy sickness as mine did frequently across the months I was off. A month at a time till I felt well enough to plan coming back.

The tablets work better if you take them all the time even on your good days because they help prevent the bad days. Also the more you take them the better the side effects become.

Kitcat159 · 11/01/2018 12:41

Been signed off work for a week.
I went into work this morning and spoke to hr. She said to call my doctor and doctor signed me off.

Had a question about the ketones testing strips some of you mentioned getting....
I went to the pharmacy but they said the strips are useless without the machine and it's to test blood. You can't get the ones you dip in urine apparently ??! They were called kesticks or something like that in a yellow box.
Can you definitely get them in a pharmacy? Or is it a doctor only thing?

Urgh you got gingered by 111 :(

MotherofPearl · 11/01/2018 19:02

I'm so relieved you've been signed off OP. I hope your work back off now and that you try to switch off and REST! You really need to rest as much as possible with pregnancy sickness - next to the right medication, rest is the most important thing. The more you do, the worse you feel - as you'll already know.

Hope you've got the ketostix now as linked to by pp. They are useful for monitoring your ketones. Have you managed to find out if your hospital has an Early Pregnancy Unit? If so, try to get in contact with them and see if they offer a self-referral service. That way you can go there for IV rehydration and/or meds as needed (bypassing your GP and the absurd ginger advice from 111). Mentions of ginger are like a red rag to a bull for HG sufferers and survivors! Keep us posted OP.

How are you doing KitKat?

Kitcat159 · 17/01/2018 16:26

I'm a lot better now I'm at home. Thanks for asking Grin
Worried about going back on Monday tho.
I'm taking the tablets twice a day at the moment and feeling much better but I can't stay awake.
So come Monday I'm going to have to stop the tablets and go back to how I was.
Had my 12 week scan last week tho which was amazing to see. Grin

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better OP. I hope you're also getting support on the HG thread.
I hate to say it but I'm afraid that stopping meds and going back to work so soon are likely to set you back. I think you need to consider a longer period of rest, and certainly not stop the medication if it's working - even if it makes you drowsy. I was signed off for nearly 3 months in my last pregnancy: work just had to deal with it. When I went back it was on a gradual phased return. The biggest mistake you can make with pregnancy sickness, ime, is to do too much too soon the moment you feel a bit better.
Lovely to hear your scan went well - really makes it feel real, and worth all the miserable sickness. Smile

Kitcat159 · 17/01/2018 19:08

I'm going to go back to the doctors on Friday and have a chat with them about going back.
Work are already chasing me about coming back.

I have felt good over the past few days. Started feeling rubbish again this evening. Not had the tablets today, As a test run. Will take them before bed tho.
Been getting weird nightmares and waking up in a hot sweat not knowing where I am.
My mum is having kittens about me not being at work. She thinks I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.
And just laid into me about the money situation while I'm on mat leave. I can't do anything about it really! I need to look after myself and baby!

Will see what doc says on friday.

No advice but I'm so sorry about how ill you are? Is your DH at least supportive?

MotherofPearl · 17/01/2018 21:52

Sorry you're getting so little family support OP. Thanks You're quite right - your health, and your baby's, must be your priority.

Work should not be pressuring you to go back. If you're not feeling up to working yet don't hesitate to say so to your doctor on Friday and get your sick note extended. Your work can't do a thing about it from a legal point of view.

huha · 18/01/2018 03:42

Fuck work. They can't pressure you to come back. Clearly you can't stop the tablets and are in no fit state to work so ask GP to sign you off. Sorry your mum isn't being supportive.

Sunshinegirl82 · 18/01/2018 11:59

I'd be tempted to tell your mum that if she can't say anything helpful and supportive she should try not saying anything at all.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so rubbish and everyone is being unsupportive. If the dr signs you off again (and it sounds like he should) I would ask them to include a note that you are not well enough to discuss work and need to be left alone. Your work are skating on thin ice in my view.

Brownbear84 · 18/01/2018 12:05

Can't believe work are pressuring you?? That's harassment and make that known to them!!

Kitcat159 · 18/01/2018 13:00

They keep sending me emails saying things like "how are you feeling now?? Are the tablets working? You do know that your sick pay has been exausted and you are on ssp don't you?! If you feel better you can tell the doctor that you want to go back to work. You don't HAVE to be off the entire time you are signed off"

OP posts:
Sunshinegirl82 · 18/01/2018 14:56

Ignore them OP, or send an email back saying you are still very unwell and you won't be checking your emails regularly anymore as it makes you feel worse.

In the nicest possible way OP you are not the prime minister or the CEO of a multinational company. If they can't cope with one member of staff being off for a couple of weeks then there is a problem with their staffing. It's not up to you to take risks with your and the baby's health to make up for the fact that they haven't organised their staffing effectively.

You have nothing to feel guilty for. You need to rest and look after yourself. If you take the time to get better now hopefully you will be able to return to work soon. I had 8 weeks off when I was pregnant and I don't feel the slightest bit guilty. I was ill and I needed it. Look after yourself.

Sunshinegirl82 · 18/01/2018 14:58

Also, if you are signed off but go into work it is very likely that their insurance won't cover you. I think your HR department might need some additional training.

moita · 18/01/2018 15:11

How are they contacting you?
