I keep getting really bad headaches, I have been sleeping lots during the days as they hurt so much. Whats causing them??

I'm not sure. I had the most amount of migraines(to the point of vomiting and blindness)whilst I was PG. Would be interested in finding out why....

juuule · 25/04/2007 14:49

I always had hormonal headaches in the first trimester.

Puppie · 25/04/2007 14:49

Hey SGK!

I get them too to the point where my neck and face hurt as well! I think it might have something to do with increased blood flow to the brain but not sure.

katierocket · 25/04/2007 14:50

I ad horrible headaches for first trimester and a bit beyond, think it was hormonal

frazzledfairy · 25/04/2007 14:52

i don't know either but have noticed they get worse if i'm tired or in the extremely unlikely event that i've had too much sleep!

only thing i've found to help is fresh air

liquidclocks · 25/04/2007 14:54

You quite early on?

Early pregnancy hormones can trigger migraines and also anaemia can cause bad headaches. It would be worth going to see your m/w or GP for a blood test.

If the headaches get more than you can handle there are more painkillers than paracetamol that you can take in pg (I took codeine and immigran for migraine).

Mum2FunkyDude · 25/04/2007 14:54

most likely hormonal, I had them for about 2 weeks around 16 weeks of pregnancy. Also make sure you're not dehydrated. Drink a lot more water.

MrsMar · 25/04/2007 17:09

SGK I have started getting headaches in the last few weeks (I'm 19w) I've been putting it down to tiredness as I'm really not sleeping well at all. I usually get headaches when I'm tired which is why I thought that was what was causing them. Is there a chance that's what's causing yours? Might explain why you're needing to sleep in the day too.

am 12 weeks. I took paracetamol earlier but it made no difference. I haven't been sleeping too well, and last night was a terrible night, dd1 woke up and kept disturbing me all night, and DH woke me up when he came to bed I managed to get 2 hours sleep after the school run but still have a bad headache.

Glad you put this on SGC, as I've beeen knocked flat by a migraine since last night (just getting better). You've stopped me worrying a bit

imreadyforababy · 25/04/2007 19:26

I've been getting headaches quite bad recently and i'm 17 weeks - i spoke to my m/w and she said it could be cause i totally cut out coffee and tea. She suggested have one cup of coffee or tea a day and that has seemed to fix mine for the time being.

Saying that i was a bit of a coffee junkie before i fell pregnant so its been withdrawal symptoms for me

Rumpel · 25/04/2007 19:29

I got headaches and sinus congestion for most of my pregnancy. I think it is caused by the hormone levels changing in your body and also the mucous membranes swell up causing inflammation in some areas. Of course if you are not drinking enough water it couold be dehydration headaches.

Rumpel · 25/04/2007 19:30

Congratulations!

lapsedrunner · 25/04/2007 19:32

At 12 weeks I wouldn't worry but if you get them after about 28 weeks watch out for pre-eclampsia (said from experience).

Furrymummy · 25/04/2007 19:57

I've had a migraine since yesterday, currently about 6weeks pg. I had them during last pregnancy. I was told it was because of rising levels of oestrogen. GP prescribed me Codeine. He didn't offer me Imigran, I guess it's not safe to take during pregnanyc, but TBH didn't ask! I tened to have migraines just before my period and this is why I get them during pregnancy. I can recommend vapour rub on the temple, that helps or cooling patches as well.

SparklyGothKat · 25/04/2007 20:04

I always have had bad headaches. I cut out caffine about a year ago, as i found it was giving me really bad headaches, so have been drinking caffine-free tea anyway. I have also cut down on tea as I have gone off it a bit. I hope it goes soon, its really draining me.

hi sgk
not sure whats causing them but i have ahd a few lately and have found i carry one of those FOREHEAD sticks around. its not classed as medication as such due to not being a tablet etc.

it kind of has the same effect as vicks vapourub on your chest it smells the same and feels like a cooling effect which you
rub into your forehead

just thought id mention it HTH

fizzbuzz · 25/04/2007 20:20

I had horrendous headaches from week 13 to about week 32.

Constantly at doctors, no one knew what caused them. The only thing that worked was lying down, and that made them recede a bit. They stopped when I went on maternity leave at 32 weeks. Doctor thought they were caused by stress.........I thought I had a brain tumour . They were really bad and pounded all day. Paraceatamol didn't do much, and was too scared to take a lot

Dd now 9 months and had completely forgotten about them until I read this thread,

fizzbuzz · 25/04/2007 20:21

Also forehead stick only worked on forehead! Rest of head would keep on pounding!

Hopeitwontbebig · 25/04/2007 20:21

SGK, I had really bad headaches about the same time as you, I also posted a thread about it. I second the ForHead stuff, works well, although I had to keep re-applying it and it made my eyes sting a bit.

What I found helped LOADS was drinking lots of water.

Think the headaches are down to hormones etc.

Hope you feel better soon.... not fun is it!

Furrymummy · 25/04/2007 20:26

Vapour rub works just as well as Forehead and it is cheaper...

BibiThree · 25/04/2007 21:26

Another headache sufferer. Had a two week long horrendous vice-like headache with dd from 14-16 weeks, and the same this time with twin girls, but it was from weeks 16-18.

Nothing I did made it any better, I almost flooded my internal organs with water, took paracetamol and slept a lot but I just had to ride it out.

You have my complete sympathy! Keep trying things though, you may find something that works for you - good luck

SparklyGothKat · 25/04/2007 22:23

This is the 3rd day of headaches, its really really draining me, I lay down and my eyes start to roll and I'm asleep. It started on monday after a trip to Ikea, and has been contant (sp?) since. DH said I look completely knackered. I was hoping that my energy would start to come back now, after weeks of Morning sickness and feeling crap, but this is worse
