The kick

So i have received a leaflet that is telling me that at 16 weeks i should begin to feel the baby move. I haven't felt this yet at 16 weeks and two days.

I might be a little impatient but i wanted to hear everyone else's stories about the first time they felt their baby kick? Its so i know what to look out for. Do u feel it without putting your hand on your belly? Or do you have to feel around and get the right moment ?

Thanks in advance Grin

You feel it inside you, like stomach gurgling or other internal sensations. No need for a hand from the outside, which wouldn't feel anything anyway in the early days.

The early movements don't feel like kicks they feel like little flutters and ripples as the baby is too small to give you a big kick. To begin with it's easy to miss or to think it's something else.

You may not feel anything for a while yet so don't panic. Where your placenta is can make a difference, if it's at the front it can shield you from the movements and it can take longer for you to feel them.

It can be a few more weeks yet, especially with your first pregnancy.

dontquit · 23/12/2017 01:52

First movements for me felt like a tiny electric shock inside me. So exciting. Then over the weeks they get stronger. Everyone starts to feel them at different times usually from 16 was on but could be nearer 20. With my second think it was nearer 24 weeks as placenta was to the front.

OutComeTheWolves · 23/12/2017 02:09

With my first, it was a while after 16 weeks before I felt anything. I can't remember when, but I know by 20 week scan I still hadn't felt any movement.

Karigan1 · 23/12/2017 03:01

Took me a while to realise what it was as it’s only a small weird feeling a bit like a tummy gurgle at first

Nikki2ol6 · 23/12/2017 03:53

Lay on your tummy for a while and you may feel it. It’s like a gold fish flapping around. With my first it was 15 weeks. My second 19 weeks😳

DryHeave · 23/12/2017 04:03

Early movements felt like a little rubber band ping. But I had an anterior placenta do took ages for me to feel anything.

bulldogmum · 23/12/2017 04:14

As others have said it feels like tiny butterfly flutters or gurgles inside. But if it’s your first you may not feel for a while, I didn’t until 22 weeks with my first. Currently pregnant with my second and felt from 16 weeks, but I knew what to look out for and how it felt. First time round it may have been earlier but I just didn’t realise what they were. The hand on the tummy to feel kicks comes a few weeks later. Good luck with your pregnancy!x

Anonymum123 · 23/12/2017 04:32

No kicks with my bubba until 24

BettyTemptress · 23/12/2017 04:35

The day after my 20 week scan, think it was all the prodding!

Rae2017 · 23/12/2017 05:33

It was between week 20 and 21 and felt like gurgling in tummy. From week 22 felt more like little prods

CL1982 · 23/12/2017 09:03

I had no clue what the baby kicking would feel like. The only way I could describe the early feelings was 'like wind' 😂 Anyway, I felt nothing really (especially with an anterior placenta) until 22 weeks which I am told is very normal!

Spasms are good descriptions too or ticks. Flutters were a terrible description but quite accurate as well!

Mummyme87 · 23/12/2017 09:22

Had anterior placenta both times, DS1 felt first movement around 21weeks and with this one first movement around 16weeks then nothing until around 20weeks

emvy · 23/12/2017 09:46

It felt like muscle twitches and bubbles to me initially, from around 17 weeks I guess but I wasn't sure what they were at the time - they were often after I'd eaten and I was unsure whether they were indigestion symptoms! I only knew for sure what they were when I felt more significant movements at 19 week and still that was only from the inside. I suppose maybe 21 weeks to feel it from the outside. At 24 weeks now I'm feeling lots of very obvious kicks and rolls that are visible from the outside. I remember feeling so anxious and desperate to feel movements too, hang in there! You'll feel them soon enough and they're just wonderful - enjoy x

harrietm87 · 23/12/2017 10:04

I felt it at 18 weeks and DH could feel it at around 21 weeks. I'm 25 weeks now and it's really obvious! First baby.

ClareB83 · 23/12/2017 10:46

I felt the flutters at 13+3 and then got my first kick at 16+3. I was nearly asleep and it woke me up two kicks inside. You can't feel from the outside yet.

Although I have read that anywhere from 16-24 weeks is normal.

RedBlackberries · 23/12/2017 10:49

Quite late with both babies. They start gaining muscle mass around 22 weeks and that's when you might start to feel proper kicks.

Arianna1 · 23/12/2017 10:54

Is there such thing is too much movement and kicking? I’m 21 weeks and yesterday my baby literally had a party in there all day

emvy · 23/12/2017 12:32

Mine has days like that Arianna. Just don't be alarmed if they suddenly go quiet for a day or two in between though!

tailspin · 23/12/2017 12:36

16 is insanely early to feel anything, most advice says 16-21 weeks before you feel anything!

Arianna1 · 23/12/2017 12:44

haha today almost no kicks!

gryffen · 23/12/2017 12:56

First pregnancy it was around 23 weeks u til I felt a proper kick and from 17 weeks all I had were weird twitches I could feel and see on my belly.

Toasttea · 23/12/2017 13:32

16 weeks is still early to feel a proper kick! Baby is still small

ClareB83 · 23/12/2017 13:38

I suspect I felt stuff early because it's twins. I was fully prepared to feel nothing til 20+ weeks.

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2017 13:41

It feels like lemonade in your veins. I felt it in my first pg around 18 weeks.
