Are ultrasound tech’s allowed to tell you if your pregnant?

Hello,
I went to the hospital for a ultrasound on Tuesday for a check on a ovarian cyst, when she started the scan within the first few minutes of her doing it she muttered to her assistant that was writing down the notes “5 weeks and 1 day” and took some pictures. Then asked me to go empty my bladder so they could do a internal scan. She didn’t say anything else after that apart from measurements and then told me my cyst is the same size as last time. She said my doctor will be in touch and then I left. I’m wondering what else 5 weeks and 1 day would mean apart from pregnancy??

I’d be wondering exactly the same. How would you feel about it?

BalloonDinosaur · 21/12/2017 21:56

I wouldn't know, sounds likely? Have you taken a pregnancy test?

MadameJosephine · 21/12/2017 21:58

I’m pretty sure she would tell you if she’d seen a fetal pole.

Isadora2007 · 21/12/2017 22:00

Why wouldn’t you just go and buy a test???

Toasttea · 21/12/2017 22:01

Why don't you do a test?

becca3256 · 21/12/2017 22:04

I dunno how I’d feel. I’ve heard that ultrasound techs aren’t suppose to tell you as the results need to be examined by a radiologist to confirm diagnosis, at previous scans theyve never told me and a doctor has always been in contact to discuss the results. With my first pregnancy I found out by a test at 4 weeks. I haven’t done a pregnancy test yet, was just going to wait till I get my results from the doctor.

Is it possible you could be pregnant?

NickyNora · 21/12/2017 22:09

POAS!

becca3256 · 21/12/2017 22:09

Yeah it’s possible, my period was late however I got some bleeding after sex with my partner when it was a week late and I spotted for 2 days after. I’m just thinking why else would she say 5 weeks and 1 day, I don’t understand what that could mean?

Yes they can tell you. She might have meant she could tell your were 5 weeks and 1 day since ovulation? Due to the appearance of your ovary.

Why didn't you ask?

Frazzled2207 · 21/12/2017 22:12

Definitely poas

CrossFreelancer · 21/12/2017 22:12

I've realised I sound a bit silly. Ignore me Grin

becca3256 · 21/12/2017 22:12

I’m going to get a test tommorow if I don’t get a call from the doctor.

This is one of those total-non-issue threads. We can't read the staff member's mind, how on earth would we know what she was on about? And that's if you even heard her correctly in the first place/she was even talking about you at all.

If you think you may be pregnant, you can get a test for pennies. I don't understand why you're asking us like we may be psychic Confused.

mistyweather · 21/12/2017 22:22

You need to go to a 24 hour asda and take a teat now

mistyweather · 21/12/2017 22:22

Sorry was meant to be from after that. In an not really THAT bossy

mistyweather · 21/12/2017 22:22

Grin ffs

Tinselistacky · 21/12/2017 22:25

I went for a scan for a suspected ovarian cyst and they told me I was 14 weeks pregnant. And showed me on the screen. Poas ASAP.

TheVanguardSix · 21/12/2017 22:25

Of course she'd tell you.

TheVanguardSix · 21/12/2017 22:26

You would not have been let walk out of hospital without being told.

becca3256 · 21/12/2017 22:26

Meadowhay, most people create threads to look for advice and support, I was clearly looking for if someone had been through the same thing and can relate or if anyone knows if they would have told me there and then. I never expected anyone to be ‘psychic’ and tell me.

They definitely would have told you if they suspected a pregnancy, it's their job to scan and report findings to the patient.

Sometimes they may require a "second opinion" from a colleague but definitely wouldn't need a doctor to confirm the sonographic findings.

Charlieiscool · 22/12/2017 00:29

They do not need a doctor to confirm their findings. In any NHS service they are qualified at postgraduate level. They would tell you if they saw a pregnancy.

Allthecake · 22/12/2017 01:38

Meadowhay it may be a non-issue for you, which is fine - leave the thread. But for OP I'd imagine it's a pretty big deal.

OP I'd guess they would tell you tbh. But I hope you get the answer you want after you test!

Bluebellysmell · 22/12/2017 06:15

OP, you said she said 5+1 before the internal scan, so it was part of a stomach scan?
At that gestation it is extremely unlikely they could see anything from yout stomach, they'd need to do an internal as the uterus is sat below the pubic bone and not visible from a tummy scan.
I'm a vetran of quite a few early scans and until 10 weeks they've been internals, I've asked if they could tummy scan instead and it's a no before 8 weeks as uterus in wrong place and before 10 weeks unlikely to be a clear scan.
So it;s unlikely she saw a 5 week fetal pole from a rummy scan, additionally they'd have to have told you, they couldn't let you walk out oblivious.
