Are ultrasound tech’s allowed to tell you if your pregnant?

Hello,
I went to the hospital for a ultrasound on Tuesday for a check on a ovarian cyst, when she started the scan within the first few minutes of her doing it she muttered to her assistant that was writing down the notes “5 weeks and 1 day” and took some pictures. Then asked me to go empty my bladder so they could do a internal scan. She didn’t say anything else after that apart from measurements and then told me my cyst is the same size as last time. She said my doctor will be in touch and then I left. I’m wondering what else 5 weeks and 1 day would mean apart from pregnancy??

Think it depends on the individual, I’ve had more than a couple of very early scans and they’ve been able to see everything from the external ultrasound.

My friend went for a scan on a cyst and was told at the scan that she was PG by the lady doing the scan so it can happen.

Did you test? :)

AccrualIntentions · 22/12/2017 11:59

At that gestation it is extremely unlikely they could see anything from yout stomach, they'd need to do an internal as the uterus is sat below the pubic bone and not visible from a tummy scan.

This! But rather than waiting for a call from a doctor that you might not get, I'd just go and get a test. Far easier.

GoodForgetter · 22/12/2017 12:00

I think they can also measure the uterus size in terms of weeks/days.

I for one am intrigued!! Please test OP :)

You can sometimes see a gestation sac abdominally but would need an internal to check for a fetal pole and heartbeat so it’s possible she thought she saw a pregnancy abdominally but then when she checked with a transvaginal scan she realised she was mistaken?

apologies, not exactly sure how but I posted on the wrong thread

I dont think a gynae concentrating on an ovarian cyst would be dating a pregnancy so accurately to the day even if they could see you were pregnant

The only way to find out is to do a test! I can't imagine why they wouldn't have just told you if you were, tbh.

I've had external early scans at 8 weeks, but I'm pretty sure that up to then pregnancy can only be seen internally.

Sammyclaire22 · 01/01/2018 18:19

5+1 might well have meant the size of the cyst rather than anything indicating a pregnancy and they do both types of scan (or did for me anyway) to double check as you get different views. I would have thought they would ask you if there was a chance you could be pregnant rather than saying nothing at all.
It would be a different setting on the ultrasound for them to estimate a gestational age vs cyst measurement too which I would be very surprised at them doing at the one appointment.

Ultrasonographers write their own reports, they don't get the scan images looked at by anyone else . As to whether they would have told you the results, some of our staff would have and some wouldn't .

CL1982 · 01/01/2018 18:29

@becca3256 what was the result? Was it pregnancy related?
