Accidentally ate pate at restaurant...now what?

I’m assuming nothing?

Ate some bruschetta and it was a chef speciality so when I said mm that was lovely and asked what was in it I got told olive pate.

I know I sound stupid for not realising but with it being bruschetta I just assumed it was chopped up olives prepared fresh.

I didn’t ask anything else at the time but now thinking about the risk of listeria and how was it made, what was in it, when was it made how was it stored...driving myself bananas!

Please can anyone give any advice? I know nhs says no to all pate so not sure what to do now?

I spent a week in France when I was pregnant with DS but didn't know, stuffed my face on pate, unpasteurised cheese, red wine all the bad stuff. He's fine.

Don't worry too much

defineme · 21/12/2017 00:10

Olive pate just means mushed up olives, there won't be any meat in it. Even if it was meat pate the chances of listeria being in it are vanishingly rare. Don't give it another thought.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 21/12/2017 00:12

It'll be fine. My mum smoked and drank gin when pg with me. I'm v healthy

MyKingdomForBrie · 21/12/2017 00:14

Olive Pate is olives! Olives are fine... you’re fine.

GinnyWreckin · 21/12/2017 00:14

Pate just means paste.

The olives were mashed up is all.

You will laugh about this!

If you want to see a dietitian, to clarify any food choices you make, make an appointment with the hospital dietitian at your next appointment- you do sound a teeny bit wound up!!

IronedPillowcase · 21/12/2017 00:15

Thanks everyone. Yeah I keep thinking it will just be mushed up olives, but I seriously need to step away from google as I’m reading things about storage and preparation of stuff like this and I’m doing my own head in.

The type of pâté to be avoided are those containing meat, esp liver pâté as it contains too much vitamin A (I think, see NHS website). Olives are fine!

IronedPillowcase · 21/12/2017 00:16

Ginny I am wound up haha! I’ve stopped worrying about what side I’m waking up on (it’s usually my back) so this is occupying my brain now. I had a miscarriage early this year so can’t help but overthink sometimes I need to calm down.

I am reading this as though you've had tapenade. You'll be reet.

IronedPillowcase · 21/12/2017 00:20

Honestly thanks everyone I just need a dose of common sense sometimes.

I ate shed loads of brie when I was pg because I misunderstood and thought "soft cheese" meant dairylee. Child is now 18 so no harm done whatsoever!

GinnyWreckin · 21/12/2017 10:30

Listen, it’s easy to scare yourself with dr google, so just don’t go there.

Make an appointment with all the professionals you need to. Having had a miscarriage you’re bound to feel worried about things, it’s normal.

I hope everything goes perfectly for you!

Bluerose27 · 21/12/2017 10:35

All the foods contra indicated in pregnancy are not inherently harmful to the baby. They mainly carry a slightly elevated (not definite) risk of food poisoning.
Except for certain fish which contain higher levels of mercury these days and as pp mentioned, organ meats (?) which have lots of vitamin a.

I recommend you read Expecting Better by Emily Oster (try Amazon, I got it for my Kindle) which examines these "food rules" and the reasoning behind them which will enable you to make your own decisions and be less stressed
Enjoy your pregnancy! X

BigBaboonBum · 21/12/2017 10:36

I totally misread this as you accidentally ate a plate in a restaurant Hmm . And you’ll be fine, and I would possibly give a limb to eat pate right now

ZigZagandDustin · 21/12/2017 10:40

I personally eat everything when pregnant. Just cut down on pate because if vitamin A. But I don't eat much anyway so doubt it's really necessary. I don't drink much alcohol though. Maybe 2-3 half glasses throughout the 9months.

First understand what the risk is (is it but A/listeria/food poisoning etc), then understand the risk level (is it higher possibility to get the listeria but still very low and then what is the risk of listeria causing an actual problem). Then make your own decisions about the risk involved.

Natsku · 21/12/2017 13:52

Haha don't worry OP, mashed up olives are fine!

and I would possibly give a limb to eat pate right now

Then you'll be pleased to know that you can eat up to 100g of liver pate a week according to Finnish guidelines (and Finnish babies come out nice and healthy so I reckon it's alright)

bettydraper31 · 21/12/2017 16:56

You’ll be fine.

I went to DH xmas party (set meal) a few weeks back. Starter was pate, mains was beef wellington and dessert was a cheese plate. I ate the lot!

Don’t worry! It only says to “avoid” these foods, one bit isn’t going to do any harm. Just don’t stuff yourself silly on pate and blue cheese over xmas that’s all!

Don’t worry, enjoy your pregnancy xx

Olive pate? Is that not tapinade? misses point

mindutopia · 21/12/2017 20:42

You're fine. I've eaten pate a few times. It really doesn't have significantly more infection risk than anything else in commercial food prep (more than likely it's fairly fresh in a restaurant as they probably go through loads of it). The main risk is just vitamin A toxicity, but you probably didn't eat an entire bowl of it, so not anything to worry about. The risk is really only if you are eating massive quantities daily. Like I said, I've consciously had it in small amounts a couple times.

Jenala · 21/12/2017 20:47

Pate is to be particularly avoided in pregnancy as any containing liver will be high in vitamin A.

Olive mush will not be a problem.

user1485778793 · 21/12/2017 21:06

Lol it's made from olives Grin

You sound like my sil..... she wouldn't eat dairylee when pregnant because it's soft Grin

Crumbs1 · 21/12/2017 21:07

It wasn’t pate it was tapenade.

Sparkybloke · 21/12/2017 21:12

Olive pate is olives....love 'em myself. I would relax....no meat so no issue...

DownNotOutt · 21/12/2017 21:16

Olive pate? It's not meat then. Is this a wind up?

DownNotOutt · 21/12/2017 21:17

You'll be fine OP try to step away from google it's no ones friend (speaking from experience).
