To have the whooping cough vaccine?

cherryontopp · 20/12/2017 10:51

Im 32+5 and still havent decided whether i want the vaccine.

When I've researched into it, theres a hell of a lot cases where they have healthy pregancnies and the baby has stopped growing within days of having the jab.

Its took me 3 years to conceive and itneas through IVF. To say im anxious about anything happening to the baby would be an understatement.
I know if a baby does get whooping cough it can be dangerous.

I really dont know what to do Sad

I had it and I was absolutely fine.

Shmithecat · 20/12/2017 10:58

I had it and my DS is a very loud, clear and robust 2yo.

Tinselistacky · 20/12/2017 11:01

My ds caught whooping cough at a fortnight old. He stopped breathing several times and I spent 10 month in and out of hospital with him.
He had an emergency baptism in a private room.

Have the jab op.

He is a strapping 16 yo now but we weren't sure of a healthy outcome for a long time.

Have the vaccine... the research you’ve accessed, is this peer reviewed medical journals or internet based scare mongering hogwash? As an anxious mum (which is fully expected), it may do you some good to speak to your midwife, or even someone at your IVF service if they have continuing pregnancy counselling?

Whooping Cough isn’t just dangerous to Neonates, it can quite easily kill them... that’s why the pregnancy protocol was brought about. I’ve sadly encountered whooping cough neonate deaths in my career, it’s something I’d do everything in my power to prevent.

IceLemonGin · 20/12/2017 11:11

There's a reason pregnant women are encouraged to have it. Whooping cough can cause brain damage and kill small babies. I had it in both my high risk pregnancies and my DC are fine.

PJsAndProsecco · 20/12/2017 11:11

Whooping cough can kill a newborn. Have the vaccine. It's not even really for us, it's for us to pass our immunity onto the baby.

I have never seen any significant or reliable research about it risking growth in babies. Having the vaccine with any potential risks is far better than for your baby to contract whooping cough.

FWIW, I had the vaccine with my DD and she is a healthy 2yo. Will also not hesitate to have it this time.

gryffen · 20/12/2017 11:40

I was high risk and had the WC vaccine - not a single problem.

Forgive me if this is wrong but sounds like you have been listening to horror stories such as the disgraced scientist made regarding the MMR vaccine and links to Autism (He was disgraced, kicked off a world wide programme and shunned by the science and research community).

As other people have said, its not for us its for the baby who needs the immunity from us until they get their first set of injections which will include WC booster if im not mistaken. To me the risk is too high not to get it done, WC kills as people have already said.

Not trying to scare monger or push anything on you but time is running out for that important immunity to pass to baby and the consequences could be a lot worse.

Speak to your midwife or doctor ASAP

MNOverinvestor · 20/12/2017 11:43

Have the jab. Quite apart from protecting childrne, I had Whooping Cough as an adult (having had the vaccination as a child) and it's left me with serious chest/lung issues.

LivLemler · 20/12/2017 11:48

I had it this morning. I didn't realise it's also a tetanus shot. Happy days, two for one. I'll happily take any vaccine the medical profession believes is safe, for me and/or baby.

Ifyouseeapolarbear · 20/12/2017 11:51

Had the jab in pregnancy and dd is safely here and healthy. You don't want to risk your baby dying from something you could have prevented by following medical advice and having a simple vaccination.

MintTeaLady · 20/12/2017 12:15

I had whooping cough as a newborn baby and my mum still has a horrified look in her eyes when she talks about it. I will be getting the jab myself (as I don't think my mum would cope knowing I'd missed an opportunity to prevent it happening to my baby). Please talk through your concerns with your midwife or doctor.

EekThreek · 20/12/2017 12:16

I've had the vaccine in two of my pregnancies (wasn't available for DD). No ongoing problems, and like others have said, it's really only to pass my immunity onto the baby.

There's no way I'd miss a chance to protect my family if presented with it!

I understand why you'd be anxious, and I think really you need to speak to your doctor or midwife for more reassurance, rather than internet strangers. But for as much as my opinion counts, just do it.

fruitlovingmonkey · 20/12/2017 12:17

Have you already had the vaccine? Perhaps you would've had it recently as a travel jab.
Where I live they vaccinate before pregnancy rather than when you are pregnant.

Thissameearth · 20/12/2017 12:18

I got the jab this year and my baby has just had their own first jab for it now too and will have another in 3 weeks. Glad I had the jab in preg to give them some protection until she was old enough to get her own. Wouldn't hesitate to do again and am grateful for vax prog in UK having worked with people from developing countries and seeing terrible consequences of childhood disease we vax against here i.e. Polio etc

Behindtheyellowline · 20/12/2017 12:22

I had it in a high risk pregnancy and I was fine. Again going through another high risk pregnancy and will have it. NHS will stop the vaccine if it was harmful to babies.
You will hear all sorts on the internet which will worry you endless. Speak to your doctor if you are worried.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 20/12/2017 12:25

I had the whooping cough and the flu vaccine at the same time with Ds. He's now bouncing on a chair demanding to know whether Father Christmas has been yet.

I will be having it in this pregnancy too.

Have you read the study linked on the NHS webpage about the vaccine in pregnancy?

RestingGrinchFace · 20/12/2017 12:28

I have never heard of the whoooping cough vaccine damaging unborn children (you are most likely confusing what you have read for women getting the vaccine and then going for routine scans a few days later to find that you there was already a problem with the baby-think about it. If it was the vaccine that caused it it would take more than a few days to have a visible effect on the child's development). What I have heard of hover is shipping vogue killing newborns. You are frightened of the wrong thing here.

Chocolate254 · 20/12/2017 12:30

I had it, I understand if you have it too late in your pregnancy it may not work properly in protecting your baby.
I think looking at it the other way of what if your baby caught it because you didnt get the vaccine? How guilty would you feel. I dont know anyone who had a problem with it and I have had it in multiple pregnancys and not had any issues.

tailspin · 20/12/2017 12:31

I had it and my baby is still happily kicking the shit out of me.

molifly · 20/12/2017 12:39

I had it - it made me really poorly for a few days though

ClareB83 · 20/12/2017 13:36

I'm having it this afternoon. Didn't need convincing. The actual medical and scientific community agree it's the right thing to do.

happychange · 20/12/2017 13:38

I had it and was absolutely fine

RMC123 · 20/12/2017 13:52

My son had whooping cough when he was 13. He was off school for 7 weeks and was really really poorly. The thought of having a new born with whooping cough makes me feel physically sick. I would certainly have the vaccine

sausagerollsrock · 20/12/2017 13:56

Following with interest as I'm due to have the vaccination in the new year.

Prusik · 20/12/2017 14:01

I've declined the vaccine for this pregnancy (my second) in fact, upon discussion with the lady who was doing my vaccinations, she made the decision that the vax should be avoided as I reacted to it. I must admit, I'm absolutely terrified that I'll end up with newborn catching whooping cough. I would have the vaccine if I could, personally
