What to wear in labour?

Can anyone help me with what’s best to wear in labour.
The way I feel at the moment is that I’ll probably just want to be naked but that’s not going to be a pretty sight!
What would be best to get that doesn’t feel like you’re constricted with clothing but still provides some coverage?
My first was an emergency section so I didn’t have to consider it.
Thanks

Front opening nighties for after and if you wear a hospital gown it doesn't matter what state it ends up in as you won't be washing it ;-) x

I wore my Swedish hospital gown - knee-length, soft jersey fabric, buttons down the front - and best bit of all - they did the washing!

Hospital gown with my first.

Fully dressed with 2nd.

Vest top and joggers, changed 2 hours before 3rd baby arrived into hospital gown.

BigBaboonBum · 15/12/2017 19:55

@iwanttobekate never thought of using hospital night gowns, couldn’t imagine anything more appropriate now I think about it! Other than being in the nuddy

PerspicaciaTick · 15/12/2017 19:56

First time, I had a long nighty that I lopped the bottom off (so it came mid-thigh) and used the excess material to create inserts in the seams so it flared from the waist. It was very comfy and not at all restrictive.

Second time I just about managed to get my pants and skirt off before all hell broke lose. I ended up naked - no idea how.

Packed a primarni nightie but ended up having no opportunity to change and gave birth in the sports bra and t shirt I wore to the hospital. Tbh it worked pretty well.

I had 2 long nighties (not maternity ones as I knew I wouldn't be breastfeeding). They were comfy and easy to move. I knew I'd want to be covered as much as possible.
And I had a tankini for the birth pool. Again so I could remove the bottoms and still be covered at the top, if I gave birth in the pool.

I packed two lovely primark nighties (button up type) and a nursing bra.

Ended up in a hospital gown with bugger all on underneath WinkHmm

First birth was a Water birth and I wore one of those long line cami vest tops from primark. It was covering enough but still easy access for professionals.

Second birth on the bed (no time for water!) I wore a light cotton nightie. I remember going into labour wearing a fleece nightie because it was December and by the time I was in the throes of labour felt like I wanted to rip it off my body because i was so hot - wouldn’t advise one of those!

Main thing is being comfortable whether that being completely naked or in something more covering. Good luck!

GruffaloPants · 15/12/2017 20:07

I just used the gown provided in hospital. Had some baggy nighties on standby for afterwards.

ImAMarshmellow · 15/12/2017 20:09

Maternity bras from mothercare are good. I then More an old tshirt which was a million times to big.

KMoKMo · 15/12/2017 20:10

So all hospitals provide gowns then? To be honest that would probably be the best option but I wasn’t sure if they handed them out these days

I wore t-shirts of my husband's both times I gave birth. Nice and stretchy and familiar, short but not too short. If I ever have another I'll be pinching one of his t-shirts again.

sourpatchkid · 15/12/2017 20:18

Genuinely no idea what I wore - no clue at all Shock it was only a year ago but I just can't remember. I very much needed to be naked after though, I was so hot and fabric on my skin felt like it burnt

DryHeave · 15/12/2017 20:21

Very oversized cotton night shirt from Primark. Was perfect (only 2 weeks ago!)

Ivehadtonamechangeforthis · 15/12/2017 20:22

I took a short sleeve cotton nightshirt I bought in Debenhams, practical rather than glamorous plus a spare. I ended up being induced when contractions stopped and was put in a hospital gown.

mercurymaze · 15/12/2017 20:22

Bizarrely I wore a disney vest top from an ex boyfriend. after a point you could be wearing anything it doesn't matter! but I would say get a big t shirt

BuzzKillington · 15/12/2017 20:25

I wore one of dh's t-shirts the first time, but was naked the second which was much nicer (although in truth, it was a 15 minute experience).

Tiredmum100 · 15/12/2017 20:35

A cheap nightie (or few) I bought new ones, which had to be thrown out as I projectile vomited to the bottom of the bed. Ended up in a hospital gown.

Talith · 15/12/2017 20:38

Lucky to be in midwife led units so with DC1 and DC2 Was in a long T shirt and leggings until I took the leggings off 😁

Fannyfanakerpants · 15/12/2017 20:44

Just a vest top here both times. With my first, I walked in to the room and before the midwife got a chance to speak, I'd stripped off. I couldn't bear clothes on.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 15/12/2017 20:47

I wore a long floaty nightie and it ended up a soggy mess.

thepatchworkcat · 15/12/2017 20:55

Do you know, I can’t really remember Confused I definitely had PJs on for a while but had a bath at some point and an epidural later on so not sure what happened after either of those. Don’t remember putting clothes back on. Maybe a hospital gown? It was all a four day blur/nightmare with no sleep so I don’t think I cared after a while!

CrazyOldBagLady · 15/12/2017 21:15

I wore a button fronted night shirt. Managed to find a couple of cheap ones in Primark. I was able to open up the front for skin to skin and breastfeeding. Would recommend.

toastedbeagle · 15/12/2017 21:44

When I was a student I watched a woman give birth naked on all fours and thought it was incredibly powerful and this was always my dream...!

I had a naked waterbirth first time and 2nd Time round wasn't allowed one (induction) so asked my mum to buy "the cheapest nightie Tesco make" and then delivered in that and chucked it in the bin.
