Help?! Moses basket or cotbed?

Can anyone help? Im going to be a new mum in July and originally thought I would just buy a cotbed for the new baby - I thought moses baskets were cute, but seemed to be a waste of money! Then I just read that new babies shouldn't go into cots until 11/12 weeks - so should I buy a moses basket after all to fill that gap?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid/obvious question - Im just confused!!

You may find your baby doesn't really settle in a big cot. Cd you borrow a moses basket or crib and see how you get on?

Chocolateface · 21/04/2007 19:10

All three of mine went into a mosses basket initally, then graduated to a cot bed. Cot beds are quite large. You can put your newborn in a mosses basket next to your bed, and also bring the mosses basket downstairs for daytime, especailly in the first couple of weeks. I'd say definately get a mosses basket. And a stand. There was alot of baby stuff I didn't get for DS1, but I founmd my second hand mosses basket brilliant.

LucyJones · 21/04/2007 19:10

ds went straight intoa cot no problems
borrowed a moses basket for dd and she was in it for about 6 weeks I think

Nbg · 21/04/2007 19:12

Cot beds are a great thing to buy as they last so long but I would say get a cheap moses basket until baby gets a little bigger.

When baby grows out of it you can move he/she into the cotbed.

AnnabelCaramel · 21/04/2007 19:12

Another vote for moses.

Though I speak as someone whos child has more beds than World of Beds...

ChippyMinton · 21/04/2007 19:16

if you don't want to bother with the moses basket stand, stick the basket in the cot.

Moomin · 21/04/2007 19:20

another vote for Moses for the 1st 12 weeks. We had ours in the bedroom with us for both dds then they graduated to their cotbeds at around 3 months. Cot beds are enormous, plus I liked having them in with us for the early months - easier for feeding and also easy to carry if you want tpo put them to sleep downstairs. Ours was 2nd hand but we bought a new mattress for it - you should be able to get one from the For Sale coards here I would have thought or ads in your local paper if you can't borrow one.

beansprout · 21/04/2007 19:44

Ds went into a cot straight away, no problem.

Where are they supposed to go for the first 12 weeks? Whose advice is that?

yomellamoHelly · 21/04/2007 19:59

Both mine went in moses basket first. Ds1 lasted 7.5 weeks (went away and only had a cotbed, then didn't want to take a step backwards when we returned 2.5 weeks later). Ds 2 lasted 3.5 weeks. He'd started to get really unsettled being put dpwn to sleep in it and was instantly happier in a cotbed.
Our moses basket was dh's old one though, so no financial outlay. I'd try and get a second hand one from an NCT sale or the like if I were you. And also a cotbed.

PurpleLostPrincess · 21/04/2007 20:00

Both. I used a moses basket for the first few weeks/months for both mine, then transferred to the cotbed. I'm doing the same with this one (still got the cotbed)...

SNOWBall4girlz · 21/04/2007 20:06

anoter vote for the moses basket here too
we had a cot in the bedroom but dd4 sept in a moses basket for the first few months.

doggiesayswoof · 21/04/2007 20:15

Moses basket, but borrow one or don't spend a lot - if you have a fast grower, he/she could be too big for it v v quickly!

I used a crib for the 1st few months, but I borrowed it.

chocolateshoes · 21/04/2007 20:21

DS started in a moses basket until he grew out of it at 4mths which meant he could sleep in our room. He then went into a cotbed which seemed so huge for him. He has always moved around alot in his sleep and in the huge cot bed used to get all over the place so we used to pin him down with a sheet to keep him in one place. For his daytime naps we would put him in his moses basket in the cot (in his room) so he got used to his surroundings. I think you can get Moses baskets at reasonable prices on Tesco direct & then sell it afterwards?

chocolateshoes · 21/04/2007 20:22

Yes ...Tescos direct for £29.99

Chocolateface · 21/04/2007 20:28

Chocolatshoes your name makes me laugh

chocolateshoes · 21/04/2007 20:32

I keep seeing yours and thinking its me!

Chocolateface · 21/04/2007 20:36

I'm a newbie, all be it oppinionated! Hope you don't mind my name!?!

chilledmama · 21/04/2007 20:41

Whatever you go for you are going to have to get them to sleep in a cotbed eventually. I too thought I would need a moses basket...my friend loned me a bassinet which I used for a few weeks. I ended up putting up the cotbed so that I could use the mobile I had bought and thought I was going to have to build DS up to sleeoing in it but he went in and settled straight away. He liked to be swaddled for security so kept doing it. If you decide to follow a set routine, the 'unnamable one' suggests you get them into their cot from scratch. Can prove very difficult though if you don't have a big bedroom (cotbeds not small!!)

bambi06 · 21/04/2007 20:50

i used the carrycot from the pram for both mine instead of moses basket and then put it in the cot so they got used to it from early on

Twinklemegan · 21/04/2007 20:50

Yes, get a cheap moses basket. We got ours from Argos and it was fine - we managed to borrow a stand though. Don't bother with those ridiculous £70 ones - a waste of money.

If you're not completely set on a cotbed as opposed to a cot, then a bedside cot is a really good idea once your LO outgrows the moses basket. Ours was an absolute godsend and it's made a really nice normal cot now DS has moved into his own room.

Washersaurus · 21/04/2007 21:03

I used a moses basket (which was £15 new off ebay) which was handy for moving about. I put it on a stand next to my bed for easier night feeds. As DS started to get bigger I put him in the moses basket in the cotbed for his daytime naps - the cotbed just seemed too gigantic for him to begin with.

chocolateshoes · 21/04/2007 21:48

Chocface O love your name. Lets keep Mnet awash with chocolate!

Emprexia · 21/04/2007 22:59

I had both. DS slept in his moses basket next to my bed for the first 14wks, then i moved him into his own room in his Cotbed.

The Moses basket has been invaluable, its come in handy for Nights at my parents, night at my caravan, and just using in the Living Room for daytime naps.

It really is worth the money.

lucy5 · 21/04/2007 23:02

I didn't bother with either this time, ds sleeps in his pram, it's a carry cot one. I bought a big wicker moses basket for dd and she absolutely hated it, it was too big.

Magnolia36 · 22/04/2007 16:00

Thanks so much for replying - the message certainly seems to be moses are baskets are handy to begin with - so we'll start with that!
