No heartbeat at 16 weeks?

Hi everyone, I had my 16 week midwife appointment and she spent about 15 minutes looking for a heartbeat but couldn’t find one. She seemed to be quite in a flap about it, maybe she was getting impatient I don’t know. I have to go back in two weeks to try again but I’m really worried. Is this normal? I came home and tried (although only for maybe five minutes) to find it myself and I couldn’t. I’m so worried Sad

I should have read until the end! That's excellent news. Your Midwife should get her knuckles rapped for that's

Mustang27 · 09/12/2017 20:40

Brilliant news

ineedwine99 · 09/12/2017 20:57

Super happy to hear that 😄

TheEagle · 09/12/2017 21:15

Lovely news OP. Delighted for you.

I had a hospital appointment where the MW couldn't find the heartbeat, around 19 weeks. They immediately got a consultant and an ultrasound. We had routine heartbeat check at 16 weeks, unless they have changed that in the past six months I think it's standard with my trust.

WaitrosePigeon · 09/12/2017 21:33

Woo so glad everything is ok xxx

mummyhaschangedhername · 09/12/2017 21:34

So glad everything was ok OP!

Jenala · 09/12/2017 21:40

Really happy for you op!

When I was pregnant in 2014 they listened for heartbeat at 16 weeks. With baby number two in 2016 they wouldn't as it's too common not to find it.

Viviennemary · 09/12/2017 21:41

That is just so stressful. I agree you should complain. How can you wait two weeks worrying. She was very wrong to do this.

Viviennemary · 09/12/2017 21:41

Sorry didn't read thread. Great that everything is fine.

DailyMaileatmyshit · 09/12/2017 21:44

On my 16 week appointment I was asked "do you want me to try and find the hearbeat" and then when I said yes she told me that she may not find it, that they don't always offer at 16 weeks and not to worry if she didn't, it wasn't anything to worry about. She did find it, but if she hadn't, she wouldn't have referred me on.

I wish I was told this. I went into my appointment and the trainee midwife (who was very very poorly and snotty/coughing a lot so I have that to look forward to, lol) took my blood pressure and the midwife asked for my details, then the midwife gave the trainee midwife a doppler and trainee midwife said “okay then let’s listen to this baby’s heartbeat!”, they made jokes about how high up the table was I had to lie on because of my SPD beginning (it was very high! But I managed) and then after trying for about 5 minutes the midwife took over for 15 minutes and nothing. Nothing else was done in the appointment other than she wrote in my notes that I had no urine sample (I completely forgot) but I think that took up too much time anyway as she was in a flap.
I was told that my normal midwife (who I’ve never met) is off sick at the moment, I don’t know when she will be back but I will mention it to her. Ultrasound direct/Babybond were fantastic though being able to find me an appointment the same day, albeit far away! I just feel very relieved. This was originally a twin pregnancy but I lost one, and to lose both would have been just heartbreaking... but thankfully the day ended in me ordering a big Chinese meal and massive relief!

So pleased for you that everything was okay! Here's hoping you have a smooth-sailing rest of pregnancySmileFlowers

Mustang27 · 10/12/2017 09:51

Sorry for the loss of your babies twinThanks. They really should have shown you a wee bit more patience considering and explained that it's still early and Doppler doesn't pick up sometimes. Glad you treated yourself to something yummy after the scan.

sandgrown · 10/12/2017 09:56

Glad everything is ok ! X

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 10/12/2017 15:10

Brilliant news!!!

Howsthings1234 · 10/12/2017 19:19

I'm sorry they did not explain it to you properly - you should definitely say something on your next appointment as that's horrible to leave you worried, especially given your circumstances.

MynewnameisKy · 10/12/2017 19:25

BigBaboon so delighted to read your update. BrewCake

regularbutpanickingabit · 10/12/2017 19:26

That’s brilliant news. Congratulations!

octoberfarm · 10/12/2017 19:32

What wonderful news! So glad everything's okay Smile

Mrstobe90 · 11/12/2017 00:04

So happy that your scan went well! You and your DP must be over the moon!
Pleas complain to your mw unit! It’s completely unacceptable that she expected you to wait for 2 weeks with that hanging over your head!
At least you can relax now Smile xx

Harperd89 · 04/11/2019 01:05

Hi my names Danielle and i know it has been over a year since you posted this but i too went for my check up at 16 weeks and my doctor said he could not find a heartbeat. My question is did you hear it before and now all of the sudden he couldn’t find it? My last 3 ultrasounds we didn’t have no issues. He sent me to hospital but a scan but they wouldn’t tell us anything, she said the result had to be sent to my doctor and since it was Friday i have to wait till Monday. Tomorrow we have an apt at 230 to find out the results but i have been freaking out for the last 2 days worrying we had lost the baby.

MockingJay27 · 04/11/2019 07:39

@Harperd89 that is disgusting of them that they wouldn't reassure you at your scan. You need to call your doctor and insist on having the results. Tell them how worried you are. You poor thing I hope everything turns out ok x
