No heartbeat at 16 weeks?

Hi everyone, I had my 16 week midwife appointment and she spent about 15 minutes looking for a heartbeat but couldn’t find one. She seemed to be quite in a flap about it, maybe she was getting impatient I don’t know. I have to go back in two weeks to try again but I’m really worried. Is this normal? I came home and tried (although only for maybe five minutes) to find it myself and I couldn’t. I’m so worried Sad

Good luck op, this happened to me a couple of times with both of mine, funny placenta I have :)

Not nice when it happens the first time. I can still remember the panic. I did not have to wait two weeks though for reassurance. That is a long time, especially if it's your first baby so you're less likely to feel movements that early and really are relying on the scan results or Doppler.. Flowers

Sending good luck for this evening Flowers

Another one sending best wishes for your scan this evening - it's great that you were able to get one so quickly.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 09/12/2017 18:55

I had this with an anterior placenta but it caused me some worry. Good luck!

Hope all goes well op

Hello! We’ve just arrived back home from the scan, and everything was perfect! I was so relieved that I cried and I think the lady thought I was a little loopy. I’ve had a headache all day that’s now beginning to shift, so I’m guessing that was a tension headache from stressing about it!

Thank you so much everybody for caring, I truly appreciate it Flowers

Really pleased for youGrin

I'm a midwife. We shouldn't be trying to listen to the heartbeat at 16 weeks and this is the reason why. It's very difficult to find at this gestation and it caused unnecessary worry and unnecessary expense repeating appointments and carrying out scans when everything is all ok but it's simply too early.

anothernetter · 09/12/2017 19:06

So glad everything is ok! I can't believe they were going to make you wait two weeks to try again. I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly

JediStoleMyBike · 09/12/2017 19:07

So pleased for you! What a relief 🙂

SnapCackleFlop · 09/12/2017 19:08

So pleased to read this! 😊😊💐💐

The MW dealt with things terribly but it sounds as though you handled it fantastically - Hope you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and your baby ❤️☺️

CaptainsCat · 09/12/2017 19:18

Glad to hear all ok! I think the guidelines to not listen at 16 weeks are good, must be common for the heartbeat to be hard to find, and then of course women will worry! I had my 16 week apt a few days ago, at 18 weeks and I’m feeling regular movements, but they still wouldn’t listen because they have implemented the new guidelines where I live.

MsP0b · 09/12/2017 19:22

Wonderful news xxxxx

Sunshinesaz86 · 09/12/2017 19:22

Such great news! Glad all was fine! Such unnecessary worry for you x

chocolateorangeowls · 09/12/2017 19:24

Brill news, I was just about to say don't worry they couldn't find mine for two weeks around that point. Xx

Howsthings1234 · 09/12/2017 19:41

Really pleased everything is ok!

When my Midwife has done mine both times at 16 weeks they always say first that it's my choice to have a go, they cant guarantee they will hear anything as it's early and if they don't hear anything there is nothing they can do
As the hospital won't scan because of it etc so I'm surprised your Midwife didn't give you that info first. I think if she had you could have been saved a lot of worry!!

littleskittle · 09/12/2017 20:01

Really happy for you! Thanks

villainousbroodmare · 09/12/2017 20:03

Great! Grin

Girlwiththearabstrap · 09/12/2017 20:07

I'm glad everything is ok. Howsthings mine said the same thing - that advice is not to listen as it can be hit and miss at 16 weeks whether they find it or not. She said she'd have a go but I wasn't to panic if she didn't find It, and that she wouldn't refer for scan because there would be no clinical need.

FuckyNellYaBastad · 09/12/2017 20:10

Excellent news op enjoy your pregnancy

ScotsLamb · 09/12/2017 20:10

I would phone up maternity assessment unit and ask for them to scan or put you on the trace. Two weeks is far too long to wait.
Do you feel any movements yet? I know I didn't until 22 weeks but some do earlier.
