I'm ten weeks pregnant and this time round feel much sicker, even though last time I had twins (could it be triplets - ahh?) Everyone seems to think this could indicate I could have a boy (girls last time). Does anyone have any feelings on this - is there any evidence that boys make you feel sicker or is it another old wives' tale?

I felt much more sicky with my DD though I never actually threw up. I actually lost weight and was still wearing my normal jeans until about 24/26 weeks. Even after the birth I was thinner than when I first became pregnant.

robbie, sorry you're feeling so queasy (I did with my dd). have a look at this which is some research which shows that girls tend to make their mums sicker. munching on a few hula hoops helped to keep my nausea at bay by not letting my stomach stay totally empty for long.

Joe1 · 01/07/2002 12:57

I am 27 weeks pregnant and, although I felt sick with ds, have suffered with sickness, although it is only occassionally now. Funny I feel that this one is a girl (I knew ds was going to be a boy) so we will see.

Tetley · 01/07/2002 13:43

I'm 25 weeks gone with no. 2. First one was a boy & this one is too. I've been fairly sick in both pregnancies - all the way through to the end first time round, being sick every night, in labour etc. This time it seems to be about every other night - so some improvement!
I definately had a "feeling" both times that I was carrying a boy.

batey · 01/07/2002 13:45

I had hyperemesis with both of mine and threw up with both until the day I gave birth. Average in 1st 4ms was 8x day, 5x night, then in latter part about half that. I too lost weight with both. Both were girls, and I have to say "never again"!!!

bundle · 01/07/2002 14:00

batey, you poor thing! I think nausea/vomiting is very underestimated - I was sick from the start of my contractions until not long before my emergency c-section and the sheer fatigue caused by the retching made me feel awful. i don't know how you managed for 2x 9 mths!

berries · 01/07/2002 14:02

Batey - same here! Did you go everywhere with a plastic bag too? Mine were also both girls.

PamT · 01/07/2002 14:20

You poor things, I can't bare being sick at any time so I really don't envy you.

aloha · 01/07/2002 14:29

Never had a moment's sickness with my boy. And yes, I do know how lucky I was.

Dreamer · 01/07/2002 16:12

Robbie, it might well be an old wives tale but it was a reality for me, I can tell you. Went of pickled onions with dd, went off everything, felt ill, sick, blaaaghhh with ds and craved meat (was a vegie, now eat fish as a consequence)

I have 2 boys and never had a moment's queasiness with either of them. A friend had 2 boys and a girl and was as sick as a dog with all of them! I guess you just can't tell...

My mum swore by keeping rich tea biscuits to hand to keep nausea at bay.

batey · 01/07/2002 18:18

Berries, tupperware boxes actually!! Was "off sick" from work for 6/9ms with dd1, SAHM for dd2, but more exhausted etc with her due to dd1 and had worse night sickness with dd2.
Tried everything in the book to ease it but nothing did. Only crunching ice when I'd get a wave of nausea, that would delay it but never prevent it.
Bundle, yes it is vastly underestimated! For me it was all consuming, worrying and exhausting. Dd2 was born with a cleft palate and for a long time I felt guilty as if it was my fault for not eating anything/properly. I'm over that now (Palate formed in 1st 6wks, the only time when I'm not sick!). There's a site for Hyperemesis Survivors, and believe me I had it mild compared to some. Some women get it SO bad they choose to abort.
Soupdragon, I too think it's more related to existing hormone levels, but it is supposed to run in famillies too. My grandma had it bad with 3 boys and 1 girl, my cousin with 2 boys. At least I'll be able to warn my dds!

Enid · 01/07/2002 19:19

25 wks pg and still suffering in the mornings! Much worse that with dd, but still have a strong feeling this one is a girl too...so we'll see.

honeybunny · 01/07/2002 19:36

3 pgs, 3 boys. Bloody awful with the first(constant nausea and cramping pain all the way to 24weeks when, sadly, the anomaly scan showed major problems and we ended the pg, maybe that was why I felt so awful), ok-ish with the 2nd (nausea and only x2 vomits! til 16weeks)and horrendous with the third. Vomiting 5-7x a day from 7-20weeks, yuk! Could have sworn No 3 was a girl, but even I couldn't miss the male genitalia swimming before my eyes on the 20 week scan!! Guess the hormone and nausea thing is an old wives tale in my case.

jenny2998 · 01/07/2002 21:50

I sailed through my first pregnancy with no 'syptoms' whatsoever (except a very nasty pregnancy rash which appeared in the last couple of weeks). That was a little boy.

The second pregnancy I felt terribly nauseous for the first 3 months or so, although I only threw-up a couple of times. I couldn't eat anything and lost nearly a stone in weight. That was a little girl.

I don't know if it had anything to do with the sex, although I always felt it might be. And I thought it was that way round - that girls make u sicker than boys. But at the end of the day, every pregnancy is different anyway.

SofiaAmes · 01/07/2002 22:42

I puked 4 or 5 times a day through the first trimester of both my pregnancies. The first was a boy and this one (i'm at 27 weeks) is a girl. I really haven't noticed any difference between the pregnancies except that maybe this time she is kicking a little less hard than my son....

susanmt · 02/07/2002 00:36

I thought girls made you sicker than boys, because you are getting a double dose of the female hormones. That was certainly how it happened for me - puked every day for 16 weeks with dd, was only sick once with ds, and the nausea eased off about 10 weeks.

robbie · 02/07/2002 09:37

Well it looks like I must have girl triplets then - wish me luck at my scan!

Mum had four, two girls and two boys, was badly sick with all of them but was hospitalised for hyperemesis (is that the right word or is that bedwetting???!) with her first boy.

berries · 02/07/2002 11:58

Batey - just started feeling sick reading these messages! Would love another but just couldn't go though that again - 14 hours of labour was a breeze!
Only feeling of satisfaction throughout the pregnancy was when a saw the doc again with pregnancy no 2. He had repeatedly told me 'you're pregnant, you will feel sick' (followed by virtual pat on the head) with no 1, until I ended up in hospital with so many drips all my veins collapsed. With No 2 I went in a 6 weeks & said 'I'm being sick again' and he couldn't give me the tablets fast enough.
BTW I thought I was the only one who had seriously contemplated abortion, feel terribly guily now, of course.

Tillysmummy · 02/07/2002 15:28

I think that girls make you sicker than boys too. I was certainly more emotional too coz of double dose of female hormone !

Harrysmum · 02/07/2002 17:07

I spent quite a long time in hospital with horrible hyperemesis during pg1 which turned out to be a boy. At 16 weeks I asked for a termination and I think that's when they took me really seriously about how badly this was affecting me (I was being sick more than once an hour in every 24 hour period including fresh blood because of tearing in my oesophagus). They pulled out all the stops medically and in other respects to support me as much as possible and I was persuaded to continue the pregnancy. I don't feel bad about it (although probably won't tell much loved ds just how bad it got) but it made me wary of ever being pg again (and am now by complete accident!). So - some morning sickness now but no medication - boy or girl?? I am v intrigued and will be asking at my 20 week scan. For anyone else being sick, knowing the sex made a huge difference as he seemed like a person and not an alien invasion / rampant disease!

XAusted · 02/07/2002 19:54

With my first pregnancy I was very laid back, had a small bump carried high and felt well all thru. Everyone said I'd have a boy. I had a girl. Second time I felt sick practically from the moment of conception and frequently wished to die. This one was a boy. There will be no third one so I will be unable to test any more theories about predicting the sex of an unborn child!
