OK so brief background. 19 weeks pregnant. High risk for blood clots due to family history and waiting on consultation appointment.
Had a risk assessment which said no standing or sitting for more than two hours in a row. And If in kitchen must work in pairs due to the heat and how busy it is.. All ok

So today was put down for till for two hours. Then in kitchen after my break with a colleague.
Then someone called in sick. So I was told by my supervisor that I had to go back on till for two hours. I said I'm not allowed. She said we'll yoi can't do kitchen on own. I said I'm afraid that's not my problem it's in my risk assessment. My manager is off. All higher management in a meeting.
In the end she rang a high manager who said I had no Choice it's either stand on a till. Sit in a grocery till or shelf tidy.. Which again isn't enough circulation and my veins in legs are already flaring up.
But he would come and discuss it and phoned the company legal person and they said as I had a break in between I could stand again.. But that break was sitting down. Again no circulation.
I was then told I had no choice as that's all there was to offer
So I walked out and currently Sat outside in tears.
They know my risks. I also just returned today from a week poorly in which I have had no return to work interview as no one to do it.. And they know the reason I was off was pregnant related.

Could they of made me do what they said even tho I said it would put me at risk..

Can I ask...why did you sit on your break if you'd just spent two hours sitting?

Wishingandwaiting · 11/10/2017 13:21

Why the heck didn’t you sit down on your break?

As for shelf tidy... you could make that work. Move around. Easily done.

Take ownership for your condition. You’re about to become a parent, don’t let your children grow up to always want the easy way and be looking for loop holes in risk assessments.

Wishingandwaiting · 11/10/2017 13:21

I meant “why the heck DID you sit down on your break?”

JakeBallardswife · 11/10/2017 13:22

They said no more than 2 hours in a row. So if you were on the till for 2 hours then you had a break, maybe go for a walk for 15 minutes? Why then could you not go back and sit on the till again for 2 hours? Then go for another walk on your break again, or have a different activity.

They mean not sit on the sofa all day every day, not at work with frequent breaks and movement. When sitting at the till, could you not stand for some of it too to give movement?

JakeBallardswife · 11/10/2017 13:24

Again this is only a massive work issue if you make it into one. Supermarkets are generally quite helpful with this sort of thing as they have the workforce and differing tasks to support your needs. I'd go back to work, speak to a manager and then apologise.

DesertSand · 11/10/2017 13:24

OP, you're swinging the lead. You need to go back into work and get on with it.

DesertSand · 11/10/2017 13:25

OP, you're swinging the lead.

But I think you already know that.

Ktown · 11/10/2017 13:26

I think you need to plan ahead.
You were probably being unreasonable.

Rainatnight · 11/10/2017 13:28

It's a real shame for people with serious pregnancy related complications when someone behaves like this.

BakedBeans47 · 11/10/2017 13:28

Why can’t you shelf tidy?

woolythoughts · 11/10/2017 13:29

Its behaviour like this that, rightly or wrongly, makes a lot of employers not want to have pregnant women working for them.

blueskyinmarch · 11/10/2017 13:29

You do have a choice - sit at till, stand at till or shelf tidy. From that i am sure you could have taken shelf tidying and made sure you moved about a bit.

Iris65 · 11/10/2017 13:29

You sat on the till for two hours and then chose to spend your break sitting?
I think you are being unreasonable.

DesertSand · 11/10/2017 13:30

Sorry about the double post. I was under the impression the first one had vanished into thin air.

tocas · 11/10/2017 13:31

Stand on the til and do leg exercises ala long haul flights or walk around as you shelf tidy. I don't see the issue anyway tbh as you've just had a break ?

JustHereForThePooStories · 11/10/2017 13:31

"Massive" work issue. Massive?

You sound like very high maintenance. You haven't been disagnosed with a condition, you've been off sick for a week, you've had a break, and you've walked out because you've been asked to do what is an essential activity of your job and really one that isn't all that physically taxing.

I really can't see what your problem is.

No wonder companies are slow to employ women of child-bearing age. You sound like an utter nightmare.

frenchfancy17 · 11/10/2017 13:32

Is it your first pregnancy?
Do you have dvt stockings?

bottlesandcans · 11/10/2017 13:36

From a woman who had to inject anti blood clotting medicine into herself daily during pregnancy and for 6 weeks postnatally- you are being unreasonable and a bit pathetic. What do you want? A loop hole for every possible excuse?

Waking out is a disciplinary issue and I hope they take this as such.

WitchesHatRim · 11/10/2017 13:38

You chose to sit down on your break.

I agree with others you are swinging the lead and I would think you could be on a disciplinary for just walking out.

flumpybear · 11/10/2017 13:40

You need to take control of your problems - you’ve been given many options all of which have different ways of standing or sitting. Break time get up and walk around if you need to - are you expecting to be told to go home? If you are then you’re too sick to work and should see your doctor again

Chewbecca · 11/10/2017 13:43

So what did you want to do other than go back on the till?

Norugratsatall · 11/10/2017 13:45

Good Lord, precious much! You should have gone for a short walk on your break knowing you'd been sat down for the past two hours. And surely shelf tidying would have been fine? Walking out was extreme and unnecessary. My advice would be to go back in, apologise and get on with your work.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 11/10/2017 13:47

Jeez go for a walk and get back on the till Hmm

You sound ridiculous.

mcdog · 11/10/2017 13:53

OP, you need to go back into work to sort this out. You cannot just walk out!!

I agree with all PP who said you should have gone for a walk in your break, and agreed to shelf tidy.

TanginaBarrons · 11/10/2017 13:53

But you haven't even been diagnosed with clots? Thousands of pregnant women are high risk for thrombosis for all kinds of reasons, including being overweight. I am one of them and wouldn't dream of behaving like this - as someone said upthread, stop being precious and looking for loopholes - you give us all a bad name.
