OK so brief background. 19 weeks pregnant. High risk for blood clots due to family history and waiting on consultation appointment.
Had a risk assessment which said no standing or sitting for more than two hours in a row. And If in kitchen must work in pairs due to the heat and how busy it is.. All ok

So today was put down for till for two hours. Then in kitchen after my break with a colleague.
Then someone called in sick. So I was told by my supervisor that I had to go back on till for two hours. I said I'm not allowed. She said we'll yoi can't do kitchen on own. I said I'm afraid that's not my problem it's in my risk assessment. My manager is off. All higher management in a meeting.
In the end she rang a high manager who said I had no Choice it's either stand on a till. Sit in a grocery till or shelf tidy.. Which again isn't enough circulation and my veins in legs are already flaring up.
But he would come and discuss it and phoned the company legal person and they said as I had a break in between I could stand again.. But that break was sitting down. Again no circulation.
I was then told I had no choice as that's all there was to offer
So I walked out and currently Sat outside in tears.
They know my risks. I also just returned today from a week poorly in which I have had no return to work interview as no one to do it.. And they know the reason I was off was pregnant related.

Could they of made me do what they said even tho I said it would put me at risk..

So you were standing for the first 2 hours? Why couldn't you then sit on the til for the other 2?

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:01

I'm only going on what the doctor written and midwife has said..
Youre right. I dislike my job. Never used to but I guess things change over time.
My job isn't too physically demanding, it does have its moments like any job but that's life.
I'm going by what I've been told. As like I say I never had any issues with my last pregnancy so this is all pretty new to me having various issues.

I don't know why everyone is being horrible to you, it sounds stressful having those worries, and all you are doing is trying to protect the health of yourself and unborn baby

WhoWants2Know · 11/10/2017 17:02

I get it OP. The rest of the shift could have been in the kitchen (as scheduled) but because of the staff shortage one of the kitchen workers was needed on till. Even if your kitchen colleague went on till, you would have been alone in the kitchen. It's a shitty situation, probably made more emotional by hormones.

KarateKitten · 11/10/2017 17:03

When you're doing the shelf tidy could you not just march on the spot to sort out the circulation issue? Or anytime you're stuck standing for a while? What about dinner and watching TV in the evening, are you as strict then?

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:04

Because the doc has written varied between. Standing sitting and more movement. Which is what the original plan was until it got changed. I was then going to be in the kitchen which is plenty of movement as lovely and busy.. I would of happy done kitchen on own and the other lady do the other job. However the Company rule Is pregnant women not allowed to do kitchen on own during busy periods. 11-3.. As I would of done that. But they adhered to that part because their policy but ignored my personal assessment.

Yeah pretty strict indoors and I'm pretty active anyway so always get up and doing something indoors.

To be honest totally see people's opinions and get why they say things. But partly I didn't explain the whole situation properly.
Everyone is different and believe me I wish it was more plain sailing like the last one.. And I know full well it's not an illness and theres probably ladies out there with bigger issues.
It was purely for advice
But like I say. The call I had fully admit they were in the wrong.. And it would go under the rule of ' suspension with pay if no suitable alternative work can be found'
I rwallwasnt worried about the pay tbh but they said that's what it will be put under.

I am still not getting why you couldn’t have done shelf tidying?

Never in my life have I seen someone seated whilst tidying supermarket shelves?

KindleBueno · 11/10/2017 17:16

Are you sure OP that it would be suspension on full pay? Be careful it's not being made go on the sick and receive SSP until maternity starts..... I have seen too many to count thinking any adjustment they or there GP suggests is automatically reasonable and getting an awful big bump back to earth.

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:25

It's come up on my online staff management as ' special paid leave' he said suspension with pay as couldn't find alternative work that is suitable.

The reason for the tidying thing is again as explained it would be go to the food dept.. Which is another dept. Which don't worry me. But it's literally stand and tidy in one aisle which let's face it wouldn't be tonnes of movement and I don't think they'd like me jogging on the spot or wandering around.
Like I said either way it's been sorted. I was not in the wrong for refusing to do what they asked as it would be a risk. Admittedly I probably should of walked out. But I'm. Pretty hot headed and have never allowed anyone to walk over me or be pressured into anything.
But tomorrow hopefully it will be fully sorted.
They also admitted they were in the wrong for failing to do a return to work meeting after sickness as there was no one around to do it... Even tho their policy is to do it at the start of shift on first day back.. Which is being dealt with tomorrow.

OP posts:
Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:29

Special paid leave is full pay they use it for things like antenal appointments, or say a family emergency etc.
As I said it wouldn't of worried me if it was unpaid as I shouldn't of got in a huff and walked out. But its done now and I shall apologise for that part tomorrow but not apologising for sticking my grounds of not putting myself or baby at risk.. Which I'm sure anyone else wouldn't put their self or baby at risk for any job.

BakedBeans47 · 11/10/2017 17:31

Sounds like you’re sorted. Might be worth managing your breaks a bit so that it gives you a break from repetitive work tasks too.

WitchesHatRim · 11/10/2017 17:32

Righto. Hmm

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:33

We get told when to have break. Not allowed to choose when to have it. But yeah it's sorted. And have text my supervisor too.

OP posts:
WitchesHatRim · 11/10/2017 17:33

As you've previously admitted to purposely booking GP appointments (pregnancy and non-pregnancy-related) for during work hours to spite a manager, and are planning on taking more sick leave to allow you to finish early before Christmas, I think you have an utter nerve.

If that's the case then it's disgraceful and you are making it harder for pregnant women.

KindleBueno · 11/10/2017 17:37

What I meant is are you sure special paid leave wasn't given as a good will gesture rather than a standard response? So if someone calls in sick every couple of days meaning your requirements can't be met will they continue giving you special payments or insist you go on sick leave as they can't guarantee your wellbeing or pay you when you're not doing anything

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:38

No my holidays allow me to finish prior to Christmas
And yes I'm. Not going to lie. I did book one during work time that was not pregnancy related. However in the end I ended up swapping my shift for it due to a colleague needing a whole day off.

OP posts:
Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:38

That I'm not sure of but I will ask tomorrow anyway.

OP posts:
WitchesHatRim · 11/10/2017 17:40

No my holidays allow me to finish prior to Christmas

If they agree them.

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:42

Yeah my manager put them. On the system. I didnt choose the dates I just said use them up. All bar one day they are all now booked. Mainly random days here and there but as long as they're used up I'm not worried when they are. My leaving date is 22 Dec.

OP posts:
SparklyMagpie · 11/10/2017 17:43

Sounds like they just didn't want to deal with anymore drama. I don't know why you're still there considering you can't stand the place.

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:46

Because I've done 17 years and it used to be better.. But most companies change as did ours. I was offered a new job but then found out I was expecting so stayed as after all, if I've worked for enhanced maternity pay then I'll stay for it.

OP posts:
BakedBeans47 · 11/10/2017 17:49

I more meant what you do during the breaks rather than the timing. So if you’re on standing duty try and sit during your breaks, if you’re sitting try and get a bit of a walk in even if it’s only short.

Mum2oneds · 11/10/2017 17:50

Sorry miss read that. Yeah good idea 💡
