I used the ear plugs in labour trying to get some rest. I had an epidural though (I think without an epidural the ear plugs would have been for DH !)

DS2 was in the NICU for a few days after he was born. The ear plugs helped me grab some much needed sleep knowing he was being cared for - appreciate this isn't the most usual situation but I was glad I had them in the bag.

You will not care a jot about your armpits!

I'm 6 weeks post birth and still don't care a jot about my armpits Blush

I’m not sure where you’ll get hot water from - would the stick on heat pads or the camping ones with the clicky metal bit in work?

If hest helps your back that much, it’d be a shame not to be able to utilise it for lack of hot water. They may take up less space too.

Glucose tablets - if they think you might need a c-section, they say nil by mouth and they were the only things that kept me going - was starving!

Bottle of water with sports style cap. Sorry if TMI, but if you have stitches post birth they can sting something dreadful when you go to the toilet - so squeezing water with a bit of tea tree oil to dilute things at same time really helps.

Snacks for DP - mine got really hungry!

You won't be shaving your armpits on the postnatal ward!

Change for vending machines / parking is helpful

Do you need both newborn and 0-3 stuff?

Hand sanitiser gel and hand cream are helpful

You might struggle to fit all that into a cubicle (two rucksacks and a hand luggage case)

Forget the razor and body lotion. Pack flip flops

An eye mask type thing because the wards are brighter than the sun 24/7.

Don't size 1 nappies go up to about 11/12lbs? I personally wouldn't bother with size 2s, but each to their own.

I'm also just taking 0-3 stuff. DD was almost 8lbs born and it was a bit big, but we made do until we got back home and then just bought a couple of newborn bits, as they are only in it a few weeks.

I'm also not sure you need to worry about a "going home outfit," although I know some people do. A vest, sleep suit and warm cardigan will do.

bobble they are a godsend when pushing. No one wants hair in there face or mouth.

I've chosen both sizes as no idea what baby will fit into.

I need the lotion as my skin is horrific at the moment.

Razor is part of even my quickest shower routine so I'll definitely use it. I detest having hair on them, appreciate it may not be a priority but if I get a shower I'll use it...

Is there an expectation that your baby will be particularly big? I'd say it's less likely they will weigh over 11lbs...

Definitely adding flip flops in place of slippers, and heat pads in plsce of the bottle.

My maternity hospital has a small kitchen for patients so was planning on using the kettle but get that pads will be easier.

Newborn baby clothes I have are up to 8/9lbs... Not 11lbs

No, I was referring to nappies. I don't think you'll need both size 1 and size 2 to be honest. I'd just take about 10 size 1s.

OnNaturesCourse · 09/10/2017 21:30

10? Don't they go through 12+ a day? I'll look j to the sizes, not something I actually considered.

You could take more and may need more, I was just basing it on the fact that you had 5 of each written on your original list.

Pillow! I have birth in 'one of the top 3 maternity hospitals'...they couldn't even find me a bloody pillow. Microwave heat pack and tennis ball for massaging lower back!

I think you can pack a huge bag full of stuff and might still find you need to send your partner out for something. Lots of hospitals have shops which stock basic items. Sounds like you've got it pretty much sorted though. Hope everything goes well Smile

When I gave birth 10 days ago, in my hospital bag i had packed:

2 x nighties
4 x big knickers
10 maternity pads (thick ones)
3 x sleepsuits for baby
4 x vests
1 x pair scratch mitts
2 x hats (part of the set with sleepsuits Grin)
Dark towel
Toiletries
Going home clothes for me - maternity jeans/top/hoody
A baggy t shirt for birthing pool - I didn't use this as I went into labour in the early hours, arrived at hospital 7cm dilated and went into the pool in my pj top
10 x size 1 nappies - we only used 4
Fluffy socks for me - didn't use
Cooling spray - didn't use
Lucozade sport drinks
Snacks
Change of clothes for my husband - didn't use

I was only in labour for 2 hours though, and went home the same day so not sure how helpful this would be.
